Despite the challenging economic times entrepreneurs are
helping to guide the UK economy through these difficult times, as both
freelancers fight back against the high unemployment rates and new
start up business look set to boost the national GDP significantly.

As a result of unemployment in the UK steadily increasing, as well as the number of
unemployed people currently being the highest since 1994, research has shown that a
significant amount of people are turning to freelance work, in an attempt to earn
money ? an increase of 12% since 2008. With the number of freelancers and new
business owners on the rise, amidst a struggling jobs market, the strong business
spirit is helping us all to avoid a future recession, and to make the very best of a
bad situation.

In the current challenging economic environment, businesses are keen to reduce fixed
costs costs, often by reducing the number of fixed staff they employ, and are
instead employing freelancers. With freelancers working on flexible, short-term
contracts, they are paid on a per work basis and are therefore not paid for the
times when they aren?t needed, helping to minimise overheads.

This has of course shaken up the freelance industry, with a large amount of work
available from many different companies. Whether it be a large retail company
looking for a web designer to design and host their website, or an office based
company needing a professional to undertake some administrative duties, it seems
that outsourcing is the way to go about it, with more outsourcing websites setting
up each month.

With many of the websites offering payment and project management platforms, as well
as a whole host of other support, it?s a hassle-free way for those with the right
skills to earn a sole income, or to supplement their income.

Many people who have been made redundant now seek work through outsourcing websites,
in order to continue earning money during a challenging economic time. The amount of
people freelancing in this way shows that they?re actively fighting the economic
environment, and boosting the UK economy at the same time.

Furthermore, a recent survey has suggested that Britain?s newest start-up businesses
are set to add hundreds of millions of pounds to the national economy next year,
with outsourcing being the concept that looks set to continue leading the way. The
survey, commissioned by T-Mobile and carried out by the Henley Business School,
estimated that technologically-focused small businesses launched in 2011 could
generated a combined ?360m for the UK economy in 2012, generating somewhere in the
region of 70,000 jobs.

Outsourcing websites have made it easy for freelancers, from freelance web designers to freelance graphic designers, to find work, whilst also providing businesses with a cheaper
alternative in getting their workload and business functions completed. Loren
Holland, Managing Director of OutsourceMyProject said: ?OutsourceMyProject provides
a useful service to freelancers and UK businesses. Our website connects freelance
professionals with businesses looking to outsource their workload, and provides them
with a platform to manage and complete their jobs. We?ve noticed that sign-ups to
the site have increased rapidly over the past 12 months, which is undoubtedly a sign
of strengthening freelance marketplace.?

Bummed-out Samsung Galaxy S smartphone and Galaxy Tab owners may still have hope of their devices getting updated with the latest version of Google?s Android platform.

According to a report from The Verge, Samsung might be reversing its position on not offering Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on its Galaxy-branded devices. The South Korean device maker ? the most popular smartphone maker in the world and the leader in Android?s stable, as well ? drew a lot of fire from upset customers when it previously announced it wouldn?t make the latest version of Android available on some of its flagship devices.

Google?s announcement of Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest and greatest version of its operating system, also came with the announcement of the Galaxy Nexus, a Google-branded Samsung phone that was the first to carry the software. The announcement of both the operating system and the device were pretty impressive, so it?s understandable that loyal Samsung customers who already have Samsung devices and aren?t ready to upgrade might be upset that it seemed the company was leaving them out in the cold.

Things were made slightly worse when Samsung announced the reasoning behind why it wouldn?t be pushing ICS to its Galaxy line of devices. The trouble, according to Ars Technica?s report, was that the devices didn?t have the RAM and ROM necessary to support both ICS and Samsung?s TouchWiz interface software. The company said there just wasn?t the memory available to run both programs at once, but it seems that was a weak explanation in the eyes of many customers who likely could care less about TouchWiz, but who definitely want ICS on their devices.

But the good news, it seems, is that there?s no fundamental incompatibility between ICS and the Galaxy line of Samsung?s devices. The customer feedback has prompted the company to ?reevaluate? whether it could push ICS to those devices. Samsung may or may not actually come up with a solution, though, and there?s speculation that this could mean a less well-integrated and less customized version of ICS will have to be made available for Galaxy device owners as a compromise. There?s also the trouble of whether carriers will support Samsung?s solution, should it find one, another aspect that?s up in the air and determined on a case-by-case basis.

There?s at least a victory here for users who were upset about not receiving ICS, and that?s the fact that their complaints didn?t fall on deaf ears. Samsung has a pretty good track record of responding to its customers when they get loud enough, and in the case of Ice Cream Sandwich, people have been pretty loud. We?ll have to see if those same customers are satisfied by whatever Samsung comes up with as a solution.

Source: http://www.androidapps.com/tech/articles/10600-samsung-investigating-ways-to-get-android-4-0-on-galaxy-tab-galaxy-s

phoebe prince marlins marlins sugar bowl kourtney kardashian pregnant kourtney kardashian pregnant wormwood

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol" easily beat its rivals in the race to No. 1 at box offices over the Christmas holiday weekend, returning action star Tom Cruise to winning form after several recent flops.

"Ghost Protocol," the fourth movie in Cruise's "Mission: Impossible" series, earned an estimated $46 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters in the four days ending on Monday, according to its distributor Paramount Pictures. Its total estimated ticket sales have reached $78.6 million after debuting in Imax and other large-screen theaters last weekend.

At international theaters, the movie dubbed "MI4", which cost around $145 million to make, sold an additional $140 million worth of tickets through Sunday. Paramount noted its audience rating from researcher CinemaScore was an "A-" and Rottentomatoes.com, a website that combines critics' reviews, gave the movie a 94 percent positive rating overall.

"We're pleased with the way we went with the movie, starting with premium pricing on large screens and letting the reviews and word-of-mouth (publicity) get out ahead of the movie," said Don Harris, president of distribution for Paramount.

Important for leading man Cruise, 49, is that after several box office flops in recent years, including dramas "Valkyrie" and "Lions for Lambs," and action-packed "Knight and Day," the success of "Ghost Protocol" has meant a return to the top of box office charts.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" took the No. 2 spot with an estimated $31.8 million over the four days, followed by 20th Century Fox family comedy "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" with a $20 million total that barely put it ahead of No. 4, adult thriller "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," at $19.4 million.

Since its midweek debut last week, "Dragon Tattoo" has earned $27.7 million. A Sony spokesman called it "a good start" that should build this coming week and into the new year.

HO HUM 2011, DOWN 4.45 PCT

Indeed, many new movies hit theaters ahead of, and during, the Christmas holiday weekend -- including "Dragon Tattoo," two movies from Steven Spielberg, "War Horse" and "The Adventures of Tintin," and the Cameron Crowe comedy, "We Bought A Zoo."

The studios expect strong demand in the days ahead while many families take time from work and school, but it is unlikely a surge can lead the domestic box office to topple last year's nearly $10.6 billion in annual ticket sales.

In fact, the top 12 movies this past weekend generated $114 million at box offices, down about 15 percent from last year, according to box office watcher Hollywood.com.

Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com now estimates total 2011 annual domestic (U.S. and Canada) box office at $10.1 billion by year's end, down 4.45 percent from 2010. Attendance so far in 2011 is off about 5 percent, while the average ticket price increased to $7.96 from $7.89.

Still, movie demand did pick up for some new titles over the weekend, and among those making a surge was Fox comedy "We Bought a Zoo," starring Matt Damon. It saw ticket sales jump 139 percent from Saturday to Sunday, its distributor 20th Century Fox said, landing it at No. 6 with $15.6 million, just behind family film "Tintin" at No. 5 with $16.1 million.

"I think playability and word-of-mouth is finally getting out" about "Zoo," said Chris Aronson, who heads domestic distribution for Fox. He noted the movie generated an "A" overall from moviegoers polled by CinemaScore.

Spielberg's "War Horse" landed in the No. 7 spot with $15 million, and another newcomer, thriller "The Darkest Hour," opened eighth with $5.5 million over the four days.

Rounding out the top 10 were holdovers "New Year's Eve" at No. 9 with slightly under $5 million and George Clooney drama "The Descendants" in the 10th position with $3.4 million.

Paramount Pictures is a unit of Viacom Inc. Warner Bros. is part of Time Warner Inc.. "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was released by the movie studio division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, a unit of Sony Corp. "Chipwrecked" and "Zoo" were both released by film divisions of 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp..

(Reporting by Bob Tourtellotte; Editing by Eric Beech)

Source: http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/enindustry/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20111226/media_nm/us_boxoffice

space ball jim mora arian foster patsy cline the weeknd echoes of silence gio gonzalez san francisco fire

<nyt_text readability="5"><nyt_correction_top/>
Every day this week, reporters and editors for The Times will recall the people, teams and moments that made the past year memorable. Readers can share their favorite moments of the year below.

</nyt_text>
The Return of a New King

Of course Novak Djokovic cared. How could he not? It was the semifinals of the United States Open, with an overflow crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium anticipating an imminent resolution to an exhausting match, an elegant ending for that most elegant of champions, Roger Federer. All Federer needed to secure victory was one more point, and up by 5-3, 40-15 in the fifth set, he had not one but two chances with his wicked serve to get it.

?I don?t know how it happened,? Djokovic said at the postmatch news conference, and neither did anyone else.

Down two match points, many players would take a somewhat conservative approach, intent on merely returning the ball before trying to leverage the point in their favor. Federer, for one.

But not Djokovic. Deep into one of the most dominant campaigns in tennis history (as of that day, he had lost a total of two matches), Djokovic had already done so much to leverage the entire season in his favor. He had adjusted his diet, his exercise regimen, even his serve. It somehow seemed dishonest to try for anything less than a steal-your-breath-away shot.

The serve from Federer zoomed toward the far corner at 108 miles per hour. The forehand return from Djokovic, short and compact and exquisite, whizzed back across the court at an angle that would stump a geometry teacher. It kissed the line.

His arms outstretched, Djokovic turned to the crowd and grinned. The fans had been rooting for Federer, for him to prove that his 11-tournament winless streak was more mirage than harbinger. But they knew brilliance when they saw it and saluted Djokovic with gusto. Djokovic won the next point, the next three games and the next match, in the final over Rafael Nadal, for his third Grand Slam title of 2011.

In a year filled with remarkable moments, Djokovic?s gamble that September afternoon served as the consummate coda, delivering a lesson that applies to life as much as sport: swing as if you mean it, swing as if you care.

 ? Ben Shpigel

The Raw Truth of Pro Football

We lost Peter Gent this fall. He was a decent wide receiver, but he was one heck of a storyteller. For my money, he is the father of jock lit.

His book ?North Dallas Forty? may have been the first adult novel I read. It was the tale of the fictional North Dallas Bulls, and it read an awful lot like the late 1960s Dallas Cowboys team that Gent had played and given his body for.

Seth Maxwell, the sly good ol? boy quarterback, was a dead ringer for Dandy Don Meredith. For a kid who learned to read by devouring the sports page on the kitchen table each morning and Sports Illustrated clandestinely by flashlight at night, ?North Dallas Forty? was like discovering ?Lord of the Rings.?

The classics would come later. Wild orgies, powerful drugs and a peek behind the curtain of the N.F.L. were irresistible.

That the Cowboys? president, Tex Schramm, and other league pooh-bahs dismissed it as lies only added to its allure.

The truth, however, is the truth, and here we are nearly 40 years after the novel?s 1973 publication, and what Gent told us about some of the outlaw elements, abuse of painkillers and football players? devotion to a violent game that wrecks their bodies still holds true.

?There was something about pro football,? he once said. ?It was violent, it was cruel. There was a part of the game that was literally insane. And I loved it.?

Not long after Gent died Sept. 30, the former N.F.L. defensive lineman Kris Jenkins confessed on these pages that part of his body remained numb and he still had brain fog after 10 bruising years in professional football.

He, too, has no regrets.

?Winning, the physical part, the mayhem, finding the line between insanity and sanity, that?s the exact reason why you play,? Jenkins said.

Earlier this month, Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd was arrested on federal drug charges.

Crippling injuries and bad behavior are not the sole domain of the N.F.L; other professional sports have had their turn in the headlines. Football, however, is what Gent knew and what he shared with us.

?Football players aren?t people, who leave home to try and play football,? Gent wrote. ?They are football players, who come home to try and play people.?

That is a pretty good insight. I appreciated him sharing it with me then, and reminding me of it now.

 ? Joe Drape

A Super Bowl to Include the World

In one sense, the most important football game of 2011 was played on July 16. In Vienna.

That was when the United States national football team lined up against Canada in the gold medal game at the world championships of American football.

You probably missed it.

Just as the world?s version of ?football? has its World Cup, so the American version has had its own quadrennial championship since 1999.
<nyt_correction_bottom> </nyt_correction_bottom><nyt_update_bottom/>
Source: http://www.nytimes.com/ref/sports/memories-from-the-year-in-sports.html

apocalypse now happy veterans day happy veterans day brian eno tomb of the unknown soldier tomb of the unknown soldier reo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ?
Of the factors that shape football conferences reputation - NFL draft selections, individual awards and success in nonconference games and bowls - the Big 12 excels, right up until that last one.
Its teams collectively own a losing record in bowls in the Big 12's 15-year history, and the league is 2-5 in games that decided the national championship in the BCS era.

Bowl games are fickle things. Some teams are motivated by the opportunity, others not so much. With little on the line in these glorified exhibitions, some look ahead to next season with playing decisions.

Teams have been known to empty the playbook, take risks that wouldn't happen during the regular season.

Players get healthy. Teams lose their coach and staff, which can inspire or deflate. Some teams practice in warmth, others with snow pushed aside or in a bubble. The zebras have been imported from neutral conferences and haven't seen the teams play.

Betting-line upsets have defined the handful of games played so far, and underdog uprisings are not unusual. Give a team a month to hear how it's not supposed to win a game and that's a powerful force.

These circumstances have worked against the Big 12, which begins its bowl schedule today with Missouri's Independence Bowl meeting with North Carolina.

Some theories for the mediocrity seem plausible. The Big 12 is a pass-first conference, and the month or so layoff disrupts passing-game rhythm and timing. Makes sense.

Also, a week often isn't enough for opponents' scout teams to simulate Big 12 offenses. But give a defensive coordinator a month or more to prepare and the most complicated offenses can be solved. The best example was Oklahoma after the 2008 season. The Sooners scored at least 60 on their final five regular-season opponents. Against Florida in the BCS title game, Oklahoma mustered two touchdowns.

Still, the top scoring and yard producing teams in the Big 12 typically win in the postseason. Since 2000, the team that that led the conference in scoring is 8-3 in bowl games. The total yards leader is 9-2 and even the passing leader is 7-4. Oklahoma State leads this league in scoring and passing, Baylor in total offense.

With Big 12 teams favored in six of eight games, starting with the Tigers today, the prospect for a leaguewide letdown again exists. The league has gone into the postseason with this kind of expectation before and has posted a winning record in bowl games six times.

Let's not overthink this. Yes, bowl games are different, and Big 12 is offensive-minded. But the record is poor primarily for three reasons.

One, Texas A&M has been a horrible bowl team. In its final football game as a Big 12 member, the Aggies will try to break a five-game losing bowl losing streak, and the setup couldn't be more ideal. A&M is playing in nearby Houston, against a Northwestern team with an even longer bowl drought. The Wildcats have lost eight straight, losing them all since winning in its first bowl appearance in 1948.

A&M is a 10-point favorite in its last game before heading to the Southeastern Conference.

And that's the Big 12's second postseason problem: the SEC.

The Big 12 owns a winning or break-even record against the four other BCS automatic qualifier conferences. Against the SEC, it's 9-19.

This year, the only meeting between the conferences comes in the Cotton Bowl, where Kansas State takes on Arkansas, and the Wildcats could have their hands full with a Razorbacks team that lost only to the teams, LSU and Alabama, playing for the national championship.

Finally, that 2-5 record in national championship games is a killer. But the way the SEC gobbles up titles, there's little left for anybody else. The Big 12 is the only other conference with multiple national championships in the BCS era, but the five losses lead the pack.

Financially, the record doesn't matter. Conferences are contracted with bowls, and the payout is the same, win or lose.

And in the Big 12's revolving door of membership - four out, two in after this year and stay tuned - what is conference pride, anyway?

So perhaps that will be the league's final irony. In a year when it lost two more members and was on the brink of extinction for a second time in two years, the Big 12 will become a postseason power, for the first time.

Source: http://www.islandpacket.com/2011/12/25/1907294/big-12-a-football-power-everywhere.html

fsu football do a barrelroll bérénice marlohe bérénice marlohe google offers tim gunn tim gunn

GRAND GOAVE, Haiti ? Three hours before Britney Gengel died in the massive earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands in Haiti two years ago, she sent her family a text message expressing pure affection for the children she had met that morning while doing humanitarian work.

"They love us so much and everyone is so happy," she wrote. "They love what they have and they work so hard to get nowhere, yet they are all so appreciative. I want to move here and start an orphanage myself."

Later that January day, Gengel lay trapped under the wreckage of a hillside hotel that had collapsed. Rescuers pulled at least 68 bodies, including Gengel's, out of the ruins.

With her last text message in mind, Gengel's family is now making it their mission to carry out her dream and aid children in this devastated island nation.

Father Leonard Gengel and his 19-year-old son Bernie are following in Britney's footsteps and spending the Christmas holiday here to finish building an elaborate orphanage on the country's western coast. The trip is Leonard Gengel's 20th this year.

"My wife and I will wrap our arms around that text message for the rest of our lives," Gengel said from the passenger seat of a maroon Mitsubishi taking him to the construction site. "The text message still resonates with us."

The center they have in mind is a memorial of sorts, a brick-and-mortar homage to not just Britney but also the dozens who perished at the Hotel Montana, which was known for its sweeping vista of the capital of Port-au-Prince.

The Haitian government estimates more than 300,000 people died in the Western Hemisphere's worst modern natural disaster. Britney Gengel's death brought home the catastrophe to her family more than 1,500 miles (2,400 kilometers) away in Rutland, Massachusetts.

She was a 19-year-old sophomore at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, when she found her calling. The communications major had come to Haiti to hand out meals to children for Food for the Poor, a religious charity based in Coconut Creek, a Fort Lauderdale suburb.

"She fell in love with the children," said Leonard Gengel, a 51-year-old home builder. "She was consumed by what she saw and felt."

Just hours before the magnitude-7 earthquake hit, Britney sent the text message to her mother, Cherylann. The last photo of Britney, taken on the day she died, shows her surrounded by a group of pigtailed girls in crisp, blue uniforms.

At first, school officials told the family that Britney had gone missing. Later they said she was on a Florida-bound helicopter. Elated and relieved, the Gengels made their way to Fort Lauderdale to reunite with her. They learned there that she wouldn't be coming. School officials had received wrong information.

"It's unfathomable for a parent to lose a child twice in 36 hours," Gengel, his voice choked up, said as the car neared Grand Goave, the coastal town Britney had planned to visit before she died.

Gengel showed up in Haiti 10 days later to recover his daughter's remains, which wouldn't be found until Feb. 14, Valentine's Day. She would be the last of the six Lynn University students and professors who died to be located.

She was buried in Worcester, Massachusetts, outside the family home in Rutland.

On Wednesday, Gengel and his son landed in Haiti, clearly still grieving their loss. They spoke of Britney in quivering voices and wore matching white Polo-style shirts with the name of the orphanage stitched across their chests: Be Like Brit.

Be Like Brit, they said, means lending a hand and looking out for the underdog.

With that in mind, the hilltop orphanage they are building, estimated to cost $1 million, will feature solar panels and earthquake-resistant walls, a medical clinic and an abundance of symbolic flourishes. It will be shaped like a 'B,' visible to Port-au-Prince-bound airplane passengers. Family members and sympathetic strangers have donated as much as $800,000, Gengel said.

The 19,000-square-foot (nearly 1,800-square-meter) facility will also house 33 boys and 33 girls, for the number of days Britney's body lay under rubble.

It's not clear yet where the children will come from, but Gengel said he wants the facility to house "true" orphans, that is, children without both parents. It's possible the children could be selected from the homeless settlements that sprung up in the aftermath of the earthquake, Gengel said.

On the Gengels' side has been an unlikely link to the National Palace. They call the first lady by her first name, Sophia.

As it happens, Bernie is roommates with the son of Haiti's pop star-turned-president, Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly, at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts.

"Very normal," Bernie said about Sandro, a first-year student who also performs under the stage name of Ti-Micky. "You wouldn't know he's the president's son."

Still, there have been hurdles, and more are certain to follow.

It took six months for the Gengels to secure a clear land title and a deposit wasn't made until September of last year. They bought the land for $50,000, father Leonard Gengel said.

On Wednesday, several dozen Haitian workers hammered away amid the cinderblock base as others poured cement.

Kervince Parayson, the site coordinator, said it was inspiring "to see someone that comes from outside Haiti, as a (foreigner), and wants to do something big like that for the children."

The orphanage is due to open on the third anniversary of the quake, in 2013.

Standing above the construction site and looking out to the ocean, Bernie Gengel said he was pleased all the effort will help dozens of people in Haiti, but it will come too late for one.

"I'm happy we're doing this," he said. "But at the same time you wish you could go back and change things and you can't."

Source: http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/latam/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20111223/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/cb_haiti_earthquake_orphanage

gold rush alaska the addams family blue bloods temple grandin texas rangers marie osmond st louis cardinals

Accordingly, it is in the interests of justice that this appeal proceed as a de novo hearing," the lawyers wrote in the motion.

The call for an audit came after Adam Chaleff-Freudenthaler and Max Reed alleged that Ford relied on a family-run company to pay some election expenses. The pair also claimed the then mayoral candidate received other corporate contributions not allowed under election rules.

The Mayor's Office has previously said that Ford's campaign finances were reviewed by an outside auditor before being submitted to Elections Toronto and that the auditor did not raise any concerns.

Chaleff-Freudenthaler said Friday there was no need for new proceedings.

"In May, the Compliance Audit Committee made a lawful decision based on the overwhelming evidence that was presented to it showing reasonable grounds for an audit of Rob Ford's election campaign," Chaleff-Freudenthaler said in a statement.

"At that time, Ford had a chance to present all the evidence he desired to rebut our allegations but chose not to. In our view, there is no reason for a court to undermine the Compliance Audit Committee."

The motion is expected to be heard in January.

Share with your social Network:

?

Source: http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20111223/ford-audit-expenses-motion-111223/20111223?hub=TorontoNewHome

x factor results x factor results the hobbit movie trailer december 21 2012 mayan calendar tcu xfactor

Yahoo Inc is considering a plan to unload most of its prized Asian assets in a complex deal valued at roughly $17 billion, sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday, winning nods of approval from Wall Street and driving its shares higher.

The offer - the latest among proposals put forth in recent months to resuscitate the once high-flying Internet company - is expected to be considered by Yahoo's board on Thursday, sources said.

The board was uninterested in entertaining offers for the entire company at this point, said one of the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Yahoo's increasing difficulty in competing with Internet heavyweights such as Google Inc and Facebook have forced it to explore proposals to revamp its business.

The former Internet powerhouse, which fired its Chief Executive Carol Bartz in September, has a market value of around $18.5 billion.

The Asian split-off plan to be considered by the board follows previous proposals by private equity firms to buy a minority stake in Yahoo. Those proposals were fiercely opposed by some of Yahoo's largest shareholders, including activist hedge fund manager Dan Loeb, of Third Point LLC.

"It's clear that Dan Loeb at Third Point is exerting some influence," said Adam Seessel, director of research at Martin Capital Management, which added to its position in Yahoo a few weeks ago. He "is doing all Yahoo shareholders a favor by looking over the board and making sure they do the right thing."

Yahoo shares, which languished in the red along with much of the technology sector on Wednesday, reversed course and ended the session almost 6 percent higher at $15.99. It inched further upward in after-hours trading to $16.09.

At a $17 billion valuation, which includes the value of the Alibaba stake that Yahoo would retain under the latest proposal, a deal would mean the Asian assets are worth $14 per Yahoo share, one of the sources said.

The deal would essentially mean that Yahoo's core U.S.-based Internet business is valued at only $2 a share, according to Lawrence Haverty, a fund manager with GAMCO investors, which owns Yahoo shares.

Given that Yahoo has roughly $2 a share in cash on its balance sheet, Haverty said the deal left plenty of room for upside in the core business.

"This is the right thing to do. This is how you maximize shareholder value," he said, noting that he believed the tax-free structure of the plan seemed feasible.

TAX-FREE DEAL

Alibaba chief Jack Ma has said several times he would like to buy back Yahoo's stake in his company, one of Asia's largest Internet corporations. Investors have long said Yahoo's investment in Alibaba, along with its 35 percent slice of Yahoo Japan, are far and away the U.S. company's most prized assets.

In the deal under contemplation, Yahoo would effectively transfer most of its 40 percent slice of Alibaba back to the Chinese company and all of its stake in Yahoo Japan to Softbank Corp, sources said.

Alibaba and Yahoo Japan would each create separate legal entities where they would put cash and operating assets, and then trade those with Yahoo, making the deal tax-free, the sources said.

At the end of the contemplated transaction Yahoo would retain a 15 percent stake in Alibaba, the sources said.

The final deal size will depend on how the assets are valued, another source said.

"It's definitely a step in the right direction. It shows that the board is thinking about shareholders as opposed to their own interests," Martin Capital's Seessel said.

Yahoo declined to comment. The possible deals were first reported in The New York Times.

Last week, sources told Reuters a consortium consisting of private equity group Silver Lake, Microsoft Corp and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz were reworking a bid for a minority stake in Yahoo.

(Reporting by Paritosh Bansal and Peter Lauria in New York, Alexei Oreskovic in San Francisco; editing by Matthew Lewis, Andre Grenon and Richard Chang.)

Source: http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/rss/tech/*http%3A//news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20111222/tc_nm/us_yahoo

history of halloween eagles cowboys eagles cowboys trick or treat times trick or treat times madoff bernie madoff

More than 2,000 candles illuminated the nave of Riverside Church on Sunday evening during its annual Candlelight Carol Festival.

The festival drew over 3,000 attendees, some from as far as South Korea, and featured music from four of the church?s musical groups over the course of two services. Rev. Arnold Thomas, the church?s minister of education, called it a celebration of light.

"This season, which marks one of the shortest days of the year, it?s good to experience light,? Thomas said. ?It really uplifts the spirit.?

The musical groups, along with nine vocal soloists, ten instrumentalists, and four handbell players, performed a selection that included a Nigerian Christmas carol and traditional favorites like ?Greensleeves? and ?Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.?

Two hours into the service, the lights turned off, and the churchgoers lit their candles and lifted them into the air during a rendition of ?Silent Night, Holy Night."

Watch a slideshow of the festival here.

Thomas said he values the festival?s sense of tradition, explaining that ?there are people who have been coming here for decades.? Retired physician and Harlem resident Ronald Lonesome, who has been a member of the church for a decade, attends the festival every year.

?I always look forward to it,? Lonesome said. ?Something about it is very soothing.?

The festival draws attendees not only from New York but from around the world as well, which the church?s director of communications, Allison Davis, attributed to strong publicity efforts. This year, those efforts which included getting the festival featured in the New York Times and Time Out New York. She said the festival started ?at least a generation ago? and has taken place every year since then.

"The former music director had sort of pulled this together as a way to bring in the Christmas holiday and a way to showcase the extraordinary musical talents at Riverside,? Davis said.

Davis said that the nave?s main level and two balconies were almost entirely full even though, Thomas noted, attendees had to buy tickets beforehand.

?This is one of those services, where, even though there?s payment to get in, there?s always a full house,? Thomas said. ?That warms my heart.?

Tags: News, Ben Gittelson, Henry Willson, Christmas, riverside church

Source: http://www.columbiaspectator.com/2011/12/19/riverside-church-holiday-festival-draws-thousands

ed lee garmin nuvi 1450 amzn tommy john surgery colorado weather alcohol poisoning alcohol poisoning

Three astronauts arrived Thursday at the International Space Station just in time for a zero gravity holiday party to begin a five-month stay in orbit.

NASA astronaut Don Pettit, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers of the European Space Agency docked at the orbiting laboratory at 10:19 a.m. ET as the two spacecraft sailed 240 miles over southern Russia. They arrived aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, which launched Wednesday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.?

"The Soyuz crew arrives down the chimney of the space station with an early Christmas present for the station's crew," NASA spokesman Rob Navias said during the televised space rendezvous.

Waiting aboard the space station were their crewmates, commander Daniel Burbank of NASA and flight engineers Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin of Russia. With the new crew members' arrival, the space station is fully staffed.

All three newly arrived astronauts are space veterans and have visited the station before. The new crew was greeted with warm hugs by the three men aboard the space station.

"I feel like I'm back home," Pettit told his wife Micki and 11-year-old twin boys Evan and Garrett via a video call from the station. "I promise to write often."

"We wish you good luck on your flight and merry Christmas," Evan said.

In between their busy work conducting science experiments in microgravity and maintaining the space station, the six spacemen will celebrate the holidays in orbital style. Burbank, Shkaplerov and Ivanishin have already decked the station's halls with festive decorations, and were just waiting for the new trio to stage a holiday feast. [Holidays in Space: An Astronaut Photo Album]

"With their arrival, ISS will be back at full strength, but we'll also have three good friends to join us," Burbank said in a holiday greeting video he sent from space. "We'll also have them just in time for the Christmas and New Year's holidays. We'll celebrate the holidays in great fashion after they get here."

Commercial spaceship arrival
Early in the new year, the station crew will begin preparing for a milestone event: the first arrival of a commercial spaceship at the space station.

The unmanned Dragon space capsule, built by SpaceX of Hawthorne, Calif., will make a cargo delivery to the station in early February. Dragon has already flown on one test flight to orbit, but this mission will be the vehicle's first trip to the space station.

SpaceX is developing Dragon under a NASA program to stimulate the growth of commercial spacecraft to take over the duties of the retired space shuttle fleet. Dragon will begin by carrying supplies, and if all goes well, the vehicle will eventually carry astronauts to the space station as well.

For this test mission, Dragon will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and autonomously rendezvous with the space station. Once within reach, the station crew will grab onto the capsule with the space station's robotic arm and berth it to the outpost.

"I think that it's really a great idea to engage more companies participating in the space program, that contribute to the manned space program in particular," Kononenko told Space.com in a preflight interview. "The only thing that I would like to emphasize is that I would like these commercial vehicles to be absolutely safe."

Greetings, Earthlings
While in space, the astronauts plan to stay in touch with friends and family, and even the public, through technology. In addition to regular calls and emails home, the spacefliers will use social media to share their experiences.

"I'm planning to use Twitter," Pettit said in a press conference before the launch. "I have a hard time saying anything in less than 140 characters. I'm still groping with how can I use that kind of medium." He also plans to blog, he added.

The crew's Expedition 30 mission aboard the space station will be particularly followed by people in the Netherlands. Kuipers is only the third Dutch astronaut to travel to space, and the first to do so twice.

"A bit to my surprise, there's a lot of attention again," Kuipers said. "This is my second flight. To small countries, of course, the flight of a national astronaut is a big thing."

You can follow Space.com assistant managing editor Clara Moskowitz on Twitter @ClaraMoskowitz.
WASHINGTON ? John Shoemaker visited six doctors in his quest to find the best treatment for his early stage prostate cancer ? and only the last one offered what made the most sense to the California man: Keep a close watch on the tumor and treat only if it starts to grow.

Very few men choose this active surveillance option. Yet Shoemaker is one of more than 100,000 men a year deemed candidates for it by a government panel. That's because their prostate cancer carries such a low risk of morphing into the kind that could kill.

The risk for them is so low, in fact, that specialists convened recently by the National Institutes of Health say it's time to strip the name "cancer" off these small, lazy tumors.

In the meantime, the panel wants more of those men offered the option of delaying treatment until regular check-ups show it's really needed. That endorsement promises to fuel efforts by the Prostate Cancer Foundation and a few other groups to spread the word to the newly diagnosed.

Shoemaker's journey shows how difficult that may be, from doctors who don't even bring it up to the fear factor.

"With prostate cancer, you hear the "C'' word, so to speak, and people freak out," says Shoemaker, 69, a businessman from Los Altos, Calif., who was intent on examining all his options.

Five years after his diagnosis ? and five biopsies plus numerous blood tests and ultrasound scans later ? Shoemaker's happy he found a surgeon who argued against immediate treatment. He's confident his prostate tumor hasn't grown, and avoided the pain and side effects of surgery or radiation.

Some 240,000 men a year in the U.S. are diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Earlier this month, the NIH-appointed panel found that most have the low-risk kind, a legacy of using problematic PSA blood tests to screen healthy men for possible signs of this slow-growing cancer that will affect most men's prostates if they live long enough.

Yet 90 percent of such men choose immediate treatment such as surgery or radiation, risking serious and long-lasting side effects, such as impotence or incontinence, without good evidence about who will live longer as a result. One recent study tracked 731 men diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer for 10 years and found no difference in survival between those who had surgery and those who weren't treated unless they went on to develop cancer symptoms, an older option known as watchful waiting.

Active surveillance is much more aggressive than watchful waiting ? men get regular scans, blood tests and biopsies to check the tumor, although the NIH panel found the degree of monitoring can vary by medical center. Active surveillance is designed to monitor men closely enough that they can get curative treatment quickly if it looks like they'll need it, well before any symptoms would begin.

"It's not treatment versus no treatment; it's about timing of treatment," Shoemaker's physician, Dr. Peter Carroll of the University of California, San Francisco, told the NIH. He's a well-known prostate cancer surgeon who also leads one of the country's few large active-surveillance programs, tracking more than 900 men for over five years. Most are treatment-free so far, and none has gone on to die of prostate cancer.

What's the advice for men? The NIH panel said men with a PSA level less than 10 and a Gleason score that's 6 or less are candidates for this type of active surveillance. The Gleason score measures how aggressive prostate cancer cells look under the microscope. Urologists can provide those numbers.

Then what? Today, what men decide to do next largely depends on the advice of the specialist they wind up seeing, and many either don't offer active surveillance or present it in a negative way, as doing nothing, the NIH panel learned. There's also the patient's instinctive "get it out" reaction.
Enter the National Proactive Surveillance Network ? at?http://www.npsn.net?? a collaboration of two large active-surveillance programs, at Johns Hopkins University and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, with the Prostate Cancer Foundation. First, it aims to educate men about active surveillance.
Within a few months, an interactive section of the site will be added to link men with doctors who offer active surveillance and track how they fare with input straight from the patients themselves, said Hopkins' Dr. H. Ballentine Carter.

"To me, it's an individualized approach rather than the one-size-fits-all approach of treating everyone," Carter says.

Beyond whether and how men choose surveillance, behavioral scientist Kathryn Taylor of Georgetown University wants to know how they decide to stick with it. About a quarter of men abandon the observation approach within two or three years, and as many as half by five years, the NIH panel learned. It's not clear how much of that was because they needed treatment, and how much was just the anxiety or getting tired of repeat biopsies.

Taylor is beginning a study of 1,500 newly diagnosed, low-risk prostate cancer patients at Kaiser Permanente in Northern California to see how many are told about active surveillance and what helped or hindered their decision.

"Living with untreated cancer is very difficult," she says, "and not everybody can do it, not surprisingly."

Source: http://psychologyofmedicine.blogspot.com/2011/12/opting-to-track-not-treat-early.html

bridge school miami dolphins charlie and the chocolate factory ou football ryan torain ryan torain world series game 3
