Chapel Hill Low Back Pain Blog Has Lots of Information

I have really enjoyed reading the Chapel Hill low back pain blog.? My husband was the first to read the blog and he was actually reading about caffeine.? However, he told me that there were so many different articles that he thought I might enjoy.? Since I run a?lot, I have been reading about barefoot running and plantar fascitis.? Someone had asked him to talk about stretches for the foot which I am also very interested in.? I assume that he probably will as he updates his blog at least weekly.? Also, he has some traveling pictures on his blog that are really cool.

Best Buy closings: steep cuts. More to come?

Best Buy closings involve 50 big-box stores, 400 jobs at headquarters, and probably thousands more retail layoffs. Best Buy closings are the steepest yet for troubled retailer.

Faced with a stubborn slide in sales at its U.S. stores,?Best?Buy?Co. Inc. on Thursday announced its steepest round of cuts: closure of 50 big box stores and elimination of 400 positions at its corporate headquarters in Richfield, Minn. Officials did not reveal which stores are on the chopping block.

The company also didn't disclose how many store employees will lose their jobs, but that number will likely be in the thousands since each store employs roughly 100 workers, including so-called Blue Shirts and Geek Squad technicians.

Best?Buy, once known as the undisputed discount king of consumer electronics, has been struggling to find its place in a world dominated by flashy high-end brand temples like Apple Stores and low-cost Internet retailers like Amazon. Customers have been increasingly migrating online where they often find better deals, forcing Best?Buy?to figure out a reason why shoppers would need to visit an actual store.

Last year,?Best?Buy?lost a staggering $1.2 billion as it deeply discounted merchandise to keep pace with rivals Amazon and Wal-Mart.

All in all, the company hopes Best?Buy closings will save $800 million over the next three years, savings the company plans to use to fund its new "connected" store remodels, international expansion and digital services. But even CEO Brian Dunn admits the company's efforts to remake itself are fraught with frustration and uncertainty.

"I'm not satisfied," Dunn told the Star Tribune in Minneapolis.

"We have a long (history) of transforming ourselves to be where the customers need to be," he said. However, "I need more information."

For example, the company plans to reduce its retail square footage in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area and San Antonio by 20 percent this year. Instead,?Best?Buy?will remodel its big boxes with smaller "connected stores" that focus more on high-level service. Will?Best?Buy?customers like the new format, shop more online, or simply go to Wal-Mart or Target? Dunn wants to know.

Given the severity of?Best?Buy's?problems, however, some experts wonder how long it will take for?Best?Buy's strategies to work, if they do.

Things are not going to get any easier in 2012, said Jeremy Brunelli, an analyst with Consumer Edge Research, a firm based in Stamford, Conn. He noted?Best?Buy?now expects sales at stores open for at least a year, a key growth number for retailers, to fall between 2 and 4 percent this year, compared to its earlier estimate of a 1 percent decline.

Brunelli said he believes there is a growing disconnect between Wall Street and?Best?Buy. While Dunn believes the company should prepare for the future, investors believe?Best?Buy?is better off just returning that $800 million in cost savings to shareholders, not exactly a vote of confidence in the company's prospects, he said.

Indeed,?Best?Buy?stock fell nearly 7 percent, or $1.85, to close Thursday at $24.77.

But Dunn remains optimistic, noting?Best?Buy?still boasts plenty of cash and a highly trained workforce.

"When I see our Blue Shirts talking to customers, I like our chances very much," he said.

What?Best?Buy?needs to figure out is how those Blue Shirts will operate in the fast changing retail environment Dunn calls the "new normal."

In truth,?Best?Buy's?plan to close 50 big box stores this year is probably only the beginning. The company operates about 1,100 stores in North America. Most of them debuted in the mid 1990s when?Best?Buy?went on its growth spurt, said Flora Delaney, a retail consultant and former?Best?Buy?executive. Since leases typically run 15 to 20 years,?Best?Buy?could simply let those leases expire, she said.

In their place, the retailer wants to build more of its highly successful?Best?Buy?Mobile stores and test its "Connected Store" concept.

In developing the format,?Best?Buy?appears to be borrowing heavily from Apple's playbook. The connected store features a "Central Knowledge Desk," similar to Apple's Genius Bar where customers can receive technical support and even take classes.

But?Best?Buy?will face a daunting challenge replicating Apple's retail success, Delaney said. The company must shift its store employees away from a number-driven sales culture to one that offers patient, high-level service.

Whereas Apple can afford to wait for customers to eventually?buy?an iPad or iPhone,?Best?Buy?faces relentless pressure to generate quarterly sales, Delaney said.

"Best?Buy?can't drive that enthusiastic loyalty" that Apple commands, she said.

But the company has no choice but to try. Its stores generate most of its $50 billion in annual sales soBest?Buy?must find ways to reinvent them, experts say.

Best?Buy?also wants to speed up its digital sales, one of the company's fastest-growing businesses, but a relatively small unit compared to revenue from the company's physical stores. Earlier this month, the retailer hired former Starbucks chief information officer Stephen Gillett to oversee its digital operations, including online and mobile offerings.

But in the end,?Best?Buy's?fate rests with its stores.

"They can't walk away from the brick and mortar business because it's so important to them," Delaney said.

Shadowing Dunn are critics calling for his dismissal. Dunn says he pays them no heed.

"I don't give them any time or attention," he said. "I've been at this company for 28 years. I'm sure our strategies are right."

The 'Rich List' kept getting richer in 2011

By Halimah Abdullah

They say that wealth begets wealth. That sure rang true for many hedge fund managers in 2011.

The ?Rich List? of Wall Street hedge fund managers, who took home a combined $14.4 billion last year, includes businessmen who culled their wealth in part through fees charged to pensions and to manage money for the wealthy.

The annual ranking by AR Magazine, an industry publication, also includes managers who made millions even though the returns on their funds?didn?t do much better than the overall S&P 500?s performance last year.

And in a year when the Occupy Wall Street movement protested inequitable wealth distribution, top hedge fund managers handling investments for the super-rich still found ways to make big money.

Take for example Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, who earned almost $4 billion mostly by betting on U.S. Treasuries, according to a TODAY report Friday by NBC senior investigative correspondent Lisa Myers.

?My customers are pension funds, teachers. I did well when others didn?t and I?m going to say that they are very grateful,? Dalio said in an interview with PBS.

Two years in a row, Dalio's firm earned more than Google, Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay combined, Myers found. And Dalio?s earnings were just considered ?pretty good? by industry standards.

?The industry?s fees and performance are so out of whack it?s unbelievable,? Bradley H. Alford, a former hedge fund investor who now oversees a mutual fund firm told the New York Times. "Fifteen years ago, you got double-digit performance for those returns, but last year, the S&P was positive and hedge funds were negative. There?s no alignment with fees.?

Number 2 on the list, shareholder activist Carl Icahn, raked in $2.5 billion.

Number 3, James Simons, who owns a stake in the Renaissance Fund, earned $2.1 billion. Citadel hedge fund head Ken Griffin got $700 million.

Griffin has a taste for the good life, Myers found.

His wedding reception was held at the palace of Versailles. He owns at least four homes in the U.S. including a $17 million home in an exclusive Hawaiian resort. He donated an eponymously named wing to the Art Institute in Chicago.

Then there?s the pauper of the top five: Steve Cohen.

Cohen, head of SAC Capital Advisers, earned a comparatively paltry?$585 million. He?s also a big spender.

He has?a 35,000 square foot mansion, owns a piece of the Mets and his world-class art collection is worth millions.

There were some losers in the group. Last year?s standout star, hedge fund manager John Paulson, founder of Paulson & Co., is believed to have personally lost about $3 billion ? losses partly attributed to his investment in a Chinese timber company later accused of fraud, according to the New York Times.

All?these billionaires either declined to comment or did not respond to NBC's calls. The managers argue that, unlike some corporate CEOs, they only do well if their investors do well.

Dalio has pledged to give away at least half of his wealth to charity.

Kindle Fire

That's pretty darn cheap. On today's Gold Box deal, Amazon has chopped an extra 30 bucks from its refurbished Kindle Fire stock The retailer promises that all the tablets are certified to "look and work like new." At the time of writing, tablet hunters had an extra 18 hours to stake their claim, but the sale will stop once it's sold its stock. There's also a limit to five per customer -- a warning to all those auction-based-get-rich-quick schemers.

Danger of grill brushes identified

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? Rhode Island Hospital physicians identified six cases of accidental ingestion of wire grill brush bristles that required endoscopic or surgical removal. The paper calls attention to the need for the public and physicians to be aware of this potential danger. It is published in the American Journal of Roentgenology and is now available online in advance of print.

David Grand, M.D., a radiologist in the diagnostic imaging department at Rhode Island Hospital, is the lead author of the paper. Grand explains that six patients were identified within an 18-month period who presented to the emergency department within 24 hours of ingesting grilled meat. Their symptoms were odynophagia (painful swallowing in the mouth or esophagus) or abdominal pain.

In all cases, a careful history revealed the patients had consumed meat cooked on a grill that was cleaned with a wire brush immediately prior to cooking. Of the patients, three presented with odynophagia as a primary symptom. Two underwent radiography of the neck, which revealed a metallic foreign body [the bristles], while one patient had a computed tomography (CT) scan that identified and localized the bristles within the neck. In all three patients the wires were identified and removed.

The remaining three patients presented with abdominal pain and underwent CT scans. In two patients, the wire perforated the small intestine and in the third, the wire perforated through the stomach and into the liver, and was surrounded by a large hepatic abscess. Surgery was performed in all three patients.

Grand says, "Although foreign body ingestion is not a rare complaint in an emergency department, it is striking that in only 18 months we identified six separate episodes of wire bristle ingestion after eating grilled meat. The public should be aware of this potential danger."

Grand adds, "It is also important for physicians to be aware of this danger and pay close attention to clinical history. In patients presenting with odynophagia, plain radiography may identify the wire bristle; however, CT is helpful for anatomic localization. For patients presenting with abdominal pain, CT is recommended and oral contrast should not be used as it can obscure the foreign body, in this case, wire bristles."

samanawasipuno.com ? Blog Archive ? Buying Real-Estate in Spain

? Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Article by Shane Tulston

Put the article here.

More and more these days people from all over Europe are buying property in Spain, and some of their favorite places are in Costa Blanca. Real estate growth has been high in this area for some time. Many of the real-estate investors buy this property for two reason, one as a vacation home for parts of the year and the other is to rent during times when they aren?t using it.

Things to Know When You Buy Property in Spain

Getting a well-known, experienced real estate agent with a good reputation is the first thing to do if you want to buy property in Spain. You want someone who is registered. As a foreigner you must take special care with this because unsuspecting buyers are easy to exploit.

Having a good working knowledge of real estate laws in Spain is vital, plus learning the language will be very helpful as well. You will also need a dependable attorney to help you as you purchase your property. He or she will be acquainted with Spanish laws and will carefully consider your contract with you before you make the final decision. Don?t accept the choice of your real-estate agent. Get one of your own whose loyalty is to you. While this may not seem like a big deal, remember that one day you might sell the property and then you will be stuck paying very complicated capital gains taxes. You will need your own reliable attorney to help you with this.

Taking a Mortgage to Buy Property in Spain

Most people will need to take a mortgage to buy a property in the Costa Blanca. You can find a large international mortgage broker in your own country that will make a loan to you for money to buy a second home. Usually you can borrow 70 percent of the purchase price but you must pay 30 percent down on the property.

Lenders often make mortgages to people who wish to buy vacation homes abroad, and purchasing a home is a great way to use the equity on your first home. Realize that your primary home in your own country is the collateral against your vacation home, so be sure you can make the payment and pay all the taxes and the interest.

Make sure that you carefully examine all your needs, wants, and options. Make sure you find just the property you want so that you won?t be disappointed later, and then, find your lender. Searching through the internet to find a reputable bank might be the first step in this direction.

How we test receivers

How we test receivers

We outline exactly how we test A/V receivers, stereo receivers and integrated amps when performing a product review.

Of all the A/V gear we test and review, none is as involved or time consuming as the A/V receiver. All those bells and whistles that get crammed into a single box of audio/video awesomeness need to be tested for functionality and ease of use. Then there?s the obvious concern of sound quality, the testing of which can involve some pretty time intensive cable swapping. It?s a complicated job, but we love every minute of it.

While you can have a listen to a receiver and possibly even play around with its remote on the showroom floor of an electronics store, it is nearly impossible to get a real feel for how intuitive its interface is. Our goal with receiver reviews is to give you an insider?s look at what owning one of these w?nder-boxes will be like and what kind of sound quality you can expect from it. Read on for our account of how we go about testing A/V receivers, stereo receivers and integrated amps.

Out of the box

While un-boxing a receiver doesn?t involve much in the way of fanfare and confetti (unless you count those damn packing peanuts), there?s still something about it that gets our blood pumping every time. Maybe it?s that ?new receiver smell?. Regardless, there?s a lot to be gleaned upon cracking open the box and we?re sure to have our notepad handy every time. Here, we?re able to gather some impressions on build quality as we get a glimpse at the receiver?s chassis and experience its weight as we pull it free from its Styrofoam cocoon. If we look closely, we can usually take a gander at the unit?s power supply, often a foreshadowing of how well the receiver will sound when put under heavy stress.

While we?re at it, we will catalog all the receiver?s accessories and cross check the list against what the manufacturer claims should be in the box. You?d be surprised at how many review units show up missing remotes, power cables and calibration microphones.

The hookup and setup

Though we?ve taken measures at our testing lab to make hooking up a receiver as easy as possible, it still takes a while to transfer the four HDMI cables, 14 speaker wires and 11 RCA cables involved in our home theater system from our reference receiver to the review unit.

Pioneer-Elite-SC-57-review-rear-inputs

With cables and wires in place, we move on to receiver setup. Since this is a process that many people less experienced than ourselves will have to go through, we consider it especially important that things go smoothly. We look for an intuitive graphic user interface (GUI) which usually consists of a series of menu screens that users have to navigate in and out of.

Setup involves inputting speaker distances, crossover points and adjusting channel levels. For this we use a good-ole Stanley tape measure and an analog decibel meter.

We do not run any auto-calibration routines until the end of our evaluation. More on this later.

The test bench

The idea behind having a test bench is that all the equipment in the system chain remains the same, save the piece that is being tested. This way, we have an easier time hearing the changes that the review piece brings to the system. Our reference system is presently comprised of a Marantz SR6005 A/V receiver, Anthem 225 Integrated amp, Oppo BDP-95 Universal Audiophile Blu-ray player, Aperion Audio Verus Grand speakers (for 2-channel testing) Aperion Audio 633 Concert HD 7-channel speaker system, Aperion Bravus 12? subwoofer and Aperion Bravus 8a subwoofer.

Marantz SR6005

The audition

After all the heaving and wiring, finally sitting down to have a listen to the gear we?ve been setting up is a welcome treat.

We mentioned earlier that we favor a manual setup over any automated setup and calibration routines for the bulk of our reviews. We do this because, in our experience, these processes end up making EQ settings that are to the detriment of our system?s sound quality. The one exception we?ve experienced was with one particular manufacturer?s product, which made alterations to the subwoofer signal that ended up improving bass response a bit. Otherwise, we?ve noted many wrongly set speaker sizes, crossover points and some seriously funky EQ settings made in attempt to compensate for our room?s limitations (which we?ve taken physical measures to deal with already). Eventually, we will run the setup routine to see how it performs but we are rarely surprised by the results.

We start our listening tests with 2-channel stereo music. This allows the receiver to show us the best it has to offer in terms of amplification. While many manufacturers claim that their amps deliver equal power to all channels, we?ve seen several where that was not the case at all. With a multi-channel A/V receiver, the stereo and direct modes ensure that as much power is being delivered to the front left and right speakers as possible.

During this stereo listening session, we listen to music tracks that we know inside and out, backward and forward. Some of the music we use was even recorded, mixed and mastered by us, which gives us the best possible insight into how the reproduced track should sound. We take copious notes on how the receiver drives the Aperion Verus Grand speakers (which we are extremely familiar with) at both moderate and high volumes.

av-receiver

While in 2-channel testing mode, we?ll also switch back and forth between a digital input (usually HDMI) and an analog input fed by the Oppo BDP-95?s stellar two-channel output. The idea here is to rank the receiver?s built-in DAC (digital to analog converter) against a reference DAC with which we are very familiar. The closer the receiver?s built-in DAC gets to the superior DAC built into the Oppo, the better.

After our 2-channel testing we?ll move on to multi-channel music, primarily provided on SACD and DVD-Audio discs, though we do have some good multi-channel material on DTS Blu-ray discs as well. This puts the receiver under much greater strain as it will have to feed 5 to 7 speakers with sound simultaneously and for prolonged periods of time. We are able to best scrutinize the receiver?s capability to reproduce sound accurately through multiple channels with music because it is much easier to critique the way the receiver supports the reproduction of a musical instrument than it is to analyze how well it made an explosion or thundering helicopter sound.

Finally, we?ll move on to Blu-ray movies. Here, we listen to how well the receiver steers effects amongst channels to create a seamless 360 degree sound field. We?ll also listen for any breakup or distortion during highly explosive scenes as we push the receiver to extremely high volumes. We also use this time to check out the receiver?s video processing by comparing its processed video output to the output coming directly from our Blu-ray player.

Testing features

Testing a receiver?s various features is the most exhausting part of the process. There?s just so many and, since several of them rely on a LAN or wireless network, equipment outside of the receiver itself threatens to muck the process up (and it has?many times).

The network-reliant features usually include Apple AirPlay, DLNA delivery of photos, music and videos from a networked computer or storage device, Internet radio access and Internet music apps such as Pandora, Spotify and Rhapsody. First, we test each feature for ease of access and to verify that they function well. Then, we will engage and evaluate any built-in audio enhancer that is meant to improve the sound of low bitrate media. Finally, we take notes on how easy it is to access these features and how clearly designed the menu is for each of them.

The rest of the features tested are usually proprietary in nature and, frankly, too numerous and random to list here. Suffice it to say that we do spend time with as many of them as we can. Anything notable will be reported on.

Writing the review

For us, simply organizing our evaluation notes into something that resembles a narrative is not good enough. We aim to give a little back-story on the manufacturer, describe our experience with the receiver and put its audio performance and user-experience into a context that is understandable, even for those not as technically inclined. We hope that by reading our receiver reviews, you will walk away with a feel for whether that particular model is something you should bother to audition yourself or remove from your short list because, ultimately, a personal audition is absolutely essential.

Dell leaves its US phone plans blank after ending sales of the Venue and Venue Pro here

While Dell may still be releasing Streaks and Venues in other countries, a company spokesman tells PC World that its last remaining phone stateside, the Venue and Venue Pro are no longer on sale. While the short lifecycle of mobile products was cited in the pair's time with us drawing to a close, the lack of replacements means Dell is out of the smartphone game in this country less than two years after entering with the Aero and Streak 5. While the spokesperson confirmed Dell would introduce more mobile devices in the US later this year, they could not say whether or not phones would be among them. We're not sure what the reboot of its product lines will entail -- other than a lack of connection to departed section head Ron Garriques -- but at least it still has those Thunder, Smoke, Lightning and Flash names in their pocket whenever something new arrives.

World cities to expand by more than twice the size of Texas by 2030

AP file

Building denser cities like Manhattan -- as shown in this aerial view Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, in New York - could be part of the answer.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

Cities worldwide are on track to expand by nearly 580,000 square miles ? more than twice the size of Texas ? in less than 20 years, according to experts at a major international science conference.

Yale University professor Karen Seto said the North American suburb had ?gone global, and car-dependent urban developments are more and more the norm.?

The world?s population is expected to grow from the current 7 billion to about 9 billion by 2050, according to the United Nations.

Experts meeting at the Planet Under Pressure 2012 conference in London said in a statement released by the organizers Tuesday that unless changes were made, ?humanity?s urban footprint? would increase in size by 1.5 million square kilometers (nearly 580,000 square miles) by 2030.

This is significantly more than twice the size of Texas or, according to a "back-of-the-envelope calculation" by Seto,?more than 43,000 football fields every day for the next 18 years.

?The way cities have grown since World War II is neither socially or environmentally sustainable and the environmental cost of ongoing urban sprawl is too great to continue,? Seto said in the statement.

?People everywhere, however, have increasingly embraced Western styles of architecture and urbanization, which are resource-intense and often not adapted to local climates,? she added. ?The North American suburb has gone global, and car-dependent urban developments are more and more the norm.?

Eco-friendly skyscrapers?
Seto was one of the authors of a report in the journal PLoS One about global urban sprawl, along with Michail Fragkias of Arizona State University,?who is?one of some 2,800 participants at the London conference.

The Planet Under Pressure conference is designed to give an idea of the health of the globe ahead of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in June.

Fragkias told msnbc.com that "the answer [to urban sprawl] is denser cities."

"The main message is we are not going to get away with cities like Phoenix or cities like Los Angeles," he said. "These are the typical cities of the single-family house, with a huge lot and huge highways that connect various areas of the cities because there is no way you can have an efficient or cheap enough mass transit system to support them."

Instead, densely populated areas such as Singapore or Manhattan --?but not New York City's?surrounding urban sprawl --?provided possible models for the future. "If cities can develop in height rather than in width that would be much more preferable and environmentally not as harmful," Fragkias said.

Census: 8 out of 10 Americans are now urbanites

But Seto told msnbc.com that density was only part of the answer, saying someone who lives close to where they work in Phoenix could have a low environmental impact, compared to someone living in a densely packed city who commutes through congested streets in a car.

Cities?are not?'bad'
And she said that increasing the?urban?population?was "absolutely" the way to deal with the rising number of people in the world.

"For a long time, environmental activists said 'cities are bad.' The rationale was cities take up space and that could be better used for gorillas and butterflies and all those other things," Seto told msnbc.com.

But she said the global population was increasing and "we certainly don't want them strolling about the entire countryside. We want them to save land for nature by living closely [together]."

The conference statement said that?creating more environmentally friendly cities included better infrastructure planning; ?reversing the trend to ever larger homes;" and ending subsidies that favor cars over public transport.

Beijing's 'hubs' haven't curbed population pressures

Inner city schools should also be improved and other urban issues such as income inequality and crime rates addressed, the statement said.

"Cities are being built so quickly, we have to rethink how we do things ... Rome wasn't built in a day, but Chinese cities are," Seto quipped, saying most urban growth was taking place in Asia.

UNICEF: Millions of kids live in urban squalor

On Tuesday, organizers of the conference also highlighted a website called Welcome to the Anthropocene, referring to a term adopted by scientists and environmentalists to describe what they say is a new epoch, one uniquely influenced by human actions.

The idea the world had entered the Anthropocene was first put forward in 2000?by Dutch Nobel laureate Professor Paul Crutzen and U.S. academic Professor Eugene F. Stoermer.

"This century is special in the Earth's history. It is the first when one species -- ours -- has the planet's future in its hands," Martin Rees of the Royal Society, Britain's academy of sciences, said at the conference Monday according to the AFP news agency. "We've invented a new geological era: the Anthropocene.?

Selling Your Home ? Home Improvements Ideas to make it Simpler ...

There is specific information on stamina rowing machines that is crucial to your fuller understanding of the issues. There was a time when we knew absolutely nothing on the matter, but that was a long time ago.

Sure, there is a lot to know on the topic, and we understand if you feel that you do not have the time or confidence to take care of matters, your self. Remember though, that you have to take everything into consideration and go with what works best for you.

The information in this article has the potential to really make a difference with your situation, and so we feel you should have an open mind with it.

It is apparent and obvious that you have to do what is in your best interest, and of course we all understand that.

If you are trying to sell your house, there are some home improvement projects that can help make it easier on you. The truth is that not every single renovation or improvement is a smart investment. In this article, we are going to look at projects that can actually help you sell your house as well as those that you need to steer clear of.

You want to make sure that the first impression prospective buyers get is a good one. This has to do with the curb appeal of your home, and even small details can contribute to this. Even your front door is a major part of the way people are going to feel about your house. You should thoroughly clean your front door or even put a fresh coat of paint up on it.

If your house has a front lawn, make sure that you keep it kept up and nicely maintained. Any fencing around your home should be in good condition and not in need of a paint job. Make sure that your windows are clean. All of these factors add up to give the potential buyer the kind of impression you want to make.

Do not invest in high ticket items or features before selling your home. In the end, you will usually not be able to find a way to rationalize the out-of-pocket expenses as these will not add enough additional value to your home. This includes something like a swimming pool or hot tub, which is seen as a luxury item by most people. The same holds true for expensive landscaping or items in your yard such as a fountain or Koi pond. That is fine if you happen to own some of these items, but do not go out and spend money on them with the intention of making your home have a better chance of selling. In budget conscious times of today, people will often feel that these features are driving up the cost of the home. Hot tubs, spas and swimming pools are examples of items that cost a lot in maintenance and that is why a lot of potential buyers might not want to even consider it.

Keep your home as clean as possible when you?re getting ready to sell it. You need to vacuum your carpets on a regular basis. Even better, have them shampooed. It?s also important to control odors. This is especially relevant if there are any smokers in your household or if you own any pets who live inside most of the time. Smokers should confine their habit to outdoors, and pet odors should be controlled as much as possible using carpet fresheners and room deodorizers. Make sure that your floors and furniture are pet hair free as well. You love your pets, obviously, and are used to them but a potential buyer might be highly allergic to them. A home that looks clean and smells clean will always be more highly appealing to a potential buyer.

It?s good sense to take steps to make sure that your house is in the best condition possible when you want to show it to potential buyers. You don?t want them to have to imagine how it will look when it?s been cleaned up, painted or had essential repairs done. Most buyers want the house to be as close to perfect as possible. At the same time, take the above guidelines into consideration before undertaking any home improvement projects.

Insults fly between title rivals United and City

By STUART CONDIE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:19 a.m. ET March 23, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Insults have started flying between Manchester United and Manchester City more than a month before the Premier League title contenders go head-to-head for the last time this season.

The rivals don't meet until April 30 but the tension from a close title race is already showing.

Riled that City official Patrick Vieira said United's decision to allow Paul Scholes to rescind his retirement was a desperate move, United manager Alex Ferguson criticized City for recalling Carlos Tevez after he ended his strike.

"Desperation? Paul Scholes is the best midfielder of the last 20 years," Ferguson said Friday. "Desperation? On Wednesday, they played a player who refused to go on the pitch and the manager had said would never play for them again. What is that?"

City takes on Stoke on Saturday with Tevez again in the squad following his six-month absence, leaving defending champion United likely to need a victory over Fulham on Monday to maintain its slender one-point lead at the top of the standings.

Ferguson said he will have a strong team at Old Trafford on Monday after Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Fabio Da Silva, Tom Cleverley and Paul Pogba all returned to action from injury or illness in a reserve match on Thursday.

"It puts us in a position where we have quite a strong squad now," Ferguson said. "We are only waiting on Nani and Michael Owen. We expect both of them to restart training next week.

"Every game is must-win now. That is no issue for me. I have been used to that for years."

That could be interpreted as another jibe at City's expense, with United having won 12 of its English record 19 league titles since City won the last of its two in 1968.

Tevez is again likely to be on the bench against Stoke after making his first appearance in six months as a substitute in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Chelsea.

City hopes to have captain Vincent Kompany back after the defender missed three games because of a calf injury. His central defensive partner Joleon Lescott is out with a hip problem.

Also Saturday, Chelsea hosts Tottenham needing victory to close on its London rival and maintain its chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

Tottenham is on a four-match winless streak - its worst run of the season - and will again be without winger Aaron Lennon because of a hamstring injury. Lennon trained Thursday but is not fit enough to play.

Striker Emmanuel Adebayor is also a major doubt for Tottenham with a hamstring injury, while Ledley King will have a late fitness test on his long-standing knee problem.

Arsenal hosts Aston Villa seeking to add to the six straight wins that have taken the Gunners a point ahead of Spurs and put them in position for third place, which brings automatic qualification rather than a spot in the Champions League playoffs.

Also Saturday, Bolton hosts fellow struggler Blackburn, Liverpool hosts Wigan, Norwich hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sunderland hosts Queens Park Rangers and Swansea hosts Everton.

Newcastle is at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

League Championship leader Southampton hosts Doncaster on Saturday, when second-place Reading hosts Blackpool and West Ham is at Burnley.

(AP) ? The SITE Intelligence Group is reporting that a lesser-known jihadist group is claiming responsibility for three shootings in southern France that left seven people dead.

The reported claim Thursday by Jund al-Khilafah, a group that has also claimed past attacks in Afghanistan and Kazakhstan, comes after Mohamed Merah ? the leading suspect ? died after a firefight with French police.

SITE, which monitors jihadist messages on the Internet, said the group issued a statement in jihadist forums saying "Yusuf of France" led an attack Monday, the day of shootings that killed a rabbi and three Jewish children in Toulouse.

French police say Merah, 23, had bragged to them that he carried out the seven slayings to "bring France to its knees."

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

TOULOUSE, France (AP) ? In a dramatic end to a 32-hour standoff, a masked French SWAT team slipped into an Islamic extremist's apartment Thursday, sparking a firefight that ended with the man being shot in the head as he jumped out the window, weapon in hand.

The suspect, 23-year-old Mohamed Merah, was wanted in the deaths of three French paratroopers, three Jewish schoolchildren and a rabbi ? all killed since March 11 in what Merah reportedly told police was an attempt to "bring France to its knees."

Police had been trying to capture the suspect alive since a predawn raid on his apartment Wednesday in the southwestern city of Toulouse. The killings he was accused of ? and boasted about to police ? have shocked France, ignited fear in moderate Muslims about stoking discrimination and may even affect the country's upcoming presidential election.

The seven slayings, carried out in three motorcycle shooting attacks, are believed to be the first killings inspired by Islamic radical motives in France since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, speaking in Paris, said an investigation was under way to see if Merah, a French citizen of Algerian descent who claimed links to al-Qaida, had any accomplices. His mother and a brother were detained a day ago by police after the mother's computer became a critical link in tracking Merah down. The brother Abdelkader had already been linked to Iraqi Islamist networks.

Prosecutor Francois Molins said Merah burst out of his bathroom when police gingerly entered his apartment Thursday morning, wildly firing his gun about 30 times before jumping out an apartment window.

"(He)launches an assault, charging police through the apartment and firing at them with a Colt .45, continuing to advance, armed and firing, as he jumps from the balcony," Molins said.

Merah fired "until he was hit by a retaliatory shot from the RAID (elite police unit), which felled him with a bullet to the head," Molins said.

The prosecutor said police fired in self-defense after going in cautiously through the front door, using robot cameras to see if there were any boobytraps. Three members of the special squad were wounded Thursday, bringing the total of injured French officers throughout the standoff to five.

Merah, lying on the ground below his second-story apartment, was wearing a flak jacket and black djellabah robe. A Colt 45 ? the type of weapon used in the three attacks ? was at his side along with a sack, Molins said.

Authorities said Merah espoused a radical form of Islam and had been to Afghanistan and the Pakistani militant stronghold of Waziristan, where he claimed to have received training from al-Qaida. He also had a long record of petty crimes in France for which he served time in prison.

Elite police squads had set off sporadic blasts throughout the night and into the morning ? some blew off the apartment's shutters ? to pressure Merah to give up. A new set of detonations, known as flash bangs, resounded at 10:30 a.m. (0930 GMT), portending an end to the standoff. Volleys of gunfire were heard an hour later.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant said police "went in by the door, taking off the door first. They also came in by the windows."

He said police used special video equipment to search the second-floor apartment but could not find him until the instruments surveyed the bathroom.

"The killer came out" firing "with extreme violence," Gueant told reporters. Police "tried to protect themselves and fired back."

Merah had made "extremely explicit films" of all three deadly attacks, video since viewed by police, and claimed to have posted them online, the prosecutor said.

In the film of the March 11 attack that killed a paratrooper, the prosecutor said the gunman is heard saying: "You kill my brothers ? I kill you."

In his film of the second attack, on March 15 that killed two paratroopers and wounded a third in nearby Montauban, Merah cried out "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great" in Arabic, the prosecutor said.

Authorities spoke little about the video of Merah slaying a rabbi and three children at a Jewish school in Toulouse. A witness to other video of that rampage, from the school, had described him shooting young children in the head.

Merah told negotiators he killed to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children and to protest the French army's involvement in Afghanistan. He was also upset over a French government ban last year on face-covering Islamic veils.

Molins said Merah told investigators where to find the bag with the videos of the slayings, caught by a camera that had been strapped to his chest and given to someone else to keep.

After the standoff ended, Sarkozy announced tough new measures to combat terrorism. He said anyone who regularly visits "websites which support terrorism or call for hate or violence will be punished by the law." He also promised a crackdown on anyone who goes abroad "for the purposes of indoctrination in terrorist ideology."

The French president also appealed to citizens not to confuse violence with France's estimated 5 million Muslims.

"Our Muslim compatriots had nothing to do with the crazy motive of a terrorist," Sarkozy said, noting that Muslim paratroopers were among those killed by the radical.

In Toulouse, the state prosecutor said off-and-on negotiations Wednesday with the suspect ? all recorded by authorities ? broke down again at night. Merah, after initially saying he would surrender, later said he would resist, and that it would be either them or him.

"If it's me, who cares? I'll go to paradise," the prosecutor quoted Merah as saying.

Merah was tracked down by more than 200 special investigators after the Monday attack on a Jewish school in northern Toulouse.

The prosecutor said two major breaks in the case led them to Merah: his mother's computer, which was used by Merah to respond to an online ad by a paratrooper trying to sell his scooter. The soldier became Merah's first victim. Authorities also found a Yamaha motorcycle shop where Merah suspiciously sought information about how to deactivate a GPS tracker.

Molins said Merah had plans to kill another soldier, which prompted the first police raid at around 3 a.m. Wednesday. After that erupted into a firefight, wounding two police, the standoff dragged on and on, with sporadic negotiations.
