Whenever I come into a batch of vintage recipes I tend to go through all of them looking for recipes that are unique, translate to modern times for the ingredients, use whole ingredients (no Jell-O or cans of soup) and frankly are not overly complex.? I love food and sophisticated food but I rarely have the time to labor over recipes with extensive ingredient lists but still want a pleasing end result.
This recipe for Chocolate Chip Pie caught my attention.? The advertisement of a ?summer dessert? placed in my ?to try? pile with the past weekend seeming a perfect time for it.? I always make vintage recipes verbatim the first time.? I will say this is the first time that the crust recipe totally tanked from the original recipe.? When I pulled it out of the oven it had converted from the formed pie crust I inserted into the oven to a bubbling, buttery mess.? I had decided I wanted to freeze the pie similar to a GrasshopperPie I make so I created a crust recipe that was more friendly to that method and it turned out great.
When purchasing the chocolate for the pie I found the variations of chocolate irresistible and decided instead of the original bitter chocolate to use Dark Chocolate with Cherries from local (and nationally distributed) Choco-love.? It seemed a great kick off to summer.
CHERRY CHOCOLATE CHIP PIE
This recipe really makes a chiffon pie.? I wanted to freeze it which I did.? When sitting out for some time it did thaw and offered a perfect chiffon pie consistency.? The original recipe suggests refrigerating for several hours.? I almost think freezing and letting it thaw you if you don?t prefer a frozen pie is the better way to go.? Feel free to swap out the chocolate for any chocolate that strikes your fancy.? I also decided at the last minute to add a few drops of all natural food coloring to give a hint at the cherry flavor visually.
Yield:? 1 9-inch regular depth pie; serves 8-10

????????? 1 cup heavy whipping cream

????????? 7 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (plus a bit more UNmelted to butter the pie pan)

2.????? In a double boiler or in a metal boil over a pan of water, combine the marshmallows and milk.? Stirring frequently allow marshmallows to fully melt and set aside.
3.????? Using a free standing mixer and whisk attachment (or hand held mixer) combine the heavy whipping cream, vanilla and if desired food coloring; whip the cream.? Fold into the marshmallow mixture.? NOTE: the marshmallows and milk may have separated.? Don?t worry about that just mix it all together.

4.????? Prepare the chocolate bar:? finely grate 2/5?s of the bar, finely chop 2/5?s of the bar.? Mix together and fold into pie filling smoothing the top with a spatula.

So I hope that in the future I can do both and that I can succeed in both. I like to think that my work can exist within both realms.

They'll be going up against 24 other finalists in the 57-year-old competition viewed by some 125 million people worldwide and hailed by its legion of devoted fans as harmless, kitschy fun that allows Europeans to forget their differences ? and economic troubles ? for at least one night.

As last year's winner, oil-rich Azerbaijan is hosting the annual competition. Few think it stands any chance of a repeat victory, but the country hopes the hundreds of millions of dollars it has invested in preparing for the event will serve as a public relations coup and mitigate misgivings about its poor democracy and human rights record.

Understanding the genetic diversity within and between populations has important implications for studies of human disease and evolution. This includes identifying associations between genetic variants and disease, detecting genomic regions that have undergone positive selection and highlighting interesting aspects of human population history.

Now, a team of researchers from the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science, UCLA's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Israel's Tel Aviv University has developed an innovative approach to the study of genetic diversity called spatial ancestry analysis (SPA), which allows for the modeling of genetic variation in two- or three-dimensional space.

Their study is published online this week in the journal Nature Genetics.

With SPA, researchers can model the spatial distribution of each genetic variant by assigning a genetic variant's frequency as a continuous function in geographic space. By doing this, they show that the explicit modeling of the genetic variant frequency ? the proportion of individuals who carry a specific variant ? allows individuals to be localized on a world map on the basis of their genetic information alone.

"If we know from where each individual in our study originated, what we observe is that some variation is more common in one part of the world and less common in another part of the world," said Eleazar Eskin, an associate professor of computer science at UCLA Engineering. "How common these variants are in a specific location changes gradually as the location changes.

"In this study, we think of the frequency of variation as being defined by a specific location. This gives us a different way to think about populations, which are usually thought of as being discrete. Instead, we think about the variant frequencies changing in different locations. If you think about a person's ancestry, it is no longer about being from a specific population ? but instead, each person's ancestry is defined by the location they're from. Now ancestry is a continuum."

The team reports the development of a simple probabilistic model for the spatial structure of genetic variation, with which they model how the frequency of each genetic variant changes as a function of the location of the individual in geographic space (where the gene frequency is actually a function of the x and y coordinates of an individual on a map).

"If the location of an individual is unknown, our model can actually infer geographic origins for each individual using only their genetic data with surprising accuracy," said Wen-Yun Yang, a UCLA computer science graduate student.

"The model makes it possible to infer the geographic ancestry of an individual's parents, even if those parents differ in ancestry. Existing approaches falter when it comes to this task," said UCLA's John Novembre, an assistant professor in the department of ecology and evolution.

SPA is also able to model genetic variation on a globe.

"We are able to also show how to predict the spatial structure of worldwide populations," said Eskin, who also holds a joint appointment in the department of human genetics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "In just taking genetic information from populations from all over the world, we're able to reconstruct the topology of the global populations only from their genetic information."

Using the framework, SPA can also identify loci showing extreme patterns of spatial differentiation.

"These dramatic changes in the frequency of the variants potentially could be due to natural selection," Eskin said. "It could be that something in the environment is different in different locations. Let's say a mutation arose that has some advantageous property in a certain environment. So you can imagine then that a kind of force for genetic selection would make this mutation more common in that environment."

The research team began to examine all of the genes, and for each gene they computed how sharp of a change there was in the frequencies. They soon discovered that the genes which had the largest and most extreme changes are the ones that are known to have experienced selection in the recent past.

"So this is a new method for finding genes that are also undergoing selection in humans," Yang said.

The idea of developing a recreation facility in Junction City is receiving some early positive support at the Junction City Area of Chamber of Commerce level.

Board member Adam Wilkey had the idea. ?As a dad with kids we travel all around the state all summer long going to baseball tournaments. We see these nice facilities all over in these communities and you can?t get hotel rooms in any of them.? Wilkey feels it would be nice to have a recreation facility like that in Junction City.

Wilkey also chairs the convention and visitor?s bureau advisory committee. ?It is a dream but i think it?s an attainable one.?

Wilkey, Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Judd Liebau, and chamber CEO? TOm Weigand have been supportive of the concept that could include the possibility of using CVB money to help pay for?a recreation complex. Soccer and softball were two other sports mentioned as possible examples of sports that could be played at a new facility. Weigand has also suggested perhaps looking at the possible use of state star bonds for a project. All three men make it clear the discussion is only in the very preliminary stage at this point. No final decisions have been made.

Using field trips, editorial cartoons and even parental objections, four innovative teachers are bringing global warming out of the science classroom

BERLIN, Md.?Fifth grader Aman Shahzad looked closely at the level attached to the plumb line. "Lower, lower," she called out. "OK! The bubble is in the middle." Her classmate, holding the wooden surveyor's pole, read the measurement: 14 centimeters.

The two students were from Pemberton Elementary School in nearby Salisbury, Md., the first to participate in a new, three-month interdisciplinary unit called "Investigating Climate Science" that spans science, math, economics and government. On this spring day on Maryland's eastern shore, they were on a field trip to Assateague Island, measuring the slope of the beach as the first step in a lesson on sea-level rise.

The unit represents the vanguard of a nationwide effort, pushed by education and science groups, to broaden climate change education into a variety of physical and social science classes in public school curricula.

Yet even here, in one the most sophisticated climate change education units in the nation, teachers still feel the need to balance what the world's scientific bodies know about climate change with what is represented in the public dialogue: avoiding terms like "global warming" and including a lesson questioning humanity's impact on the problem.

The three-month unit is designed for middle school and high-achieving elementary students. It was developed by four teachers in the Wicomico County Public Schools' gifted and talented program with help from environmental educator Carrie Samis of the Maryland Coastal Bays Program. Lessons focus on climate science and hone critical thinking skills.

• In one lesson, students examined and analyzed editorial cartoons related to the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, and discussed the advantages and disadvantages of building a pipeline to ferry crude oil from Alberta's tarsands to the United States.
• Another lesson examined the possible causes of changing climates, differentiating between anthropogenic and natural ones. Students studied greenhouse gases, climate indicators, and carbon footprints, then predicted positive and negative effects climate change may have on agriculture, the economy, infrastructure and wildlife.
• The full-day field trip to Assateague Island showed students how vulnerable the barrier island is to sea-level rise. They conducted a mock debate, acting as local stakeholders, on the impacts of salt marsh migration.
• One lesson, called "the controversy," probes "both sides of the story." It examines uncertainties in historic data, fossil records, ice core samples and tree rings, posing the questions, "How do we know?" and "Where is the proof?"?
• Several lessons are devoted to developing climate action plans and deciding what ? if anything ? students should do about climate change.

The diversified approach reaches and engages students via a number of different avenues. Gabe Dunn, a fifth grader at Westside Intermediate School, in Hebron, Md., liked the unit's hands-on science and civics activities, especially debating the viability of land development amid marsh migration and sea-level rise. Cade Stone, a fifth grader at Pemberton Elementary, found the editorial cartoons appealing.

The unit has generated controversy.

Months before the lessons began, parents voiced concern over the contents and stressed a need for "balance." Virtually every scientist studying atmospheric and earth sciences says climate change is real and that humans are the cause. But some parents sought inclusion of opposing theories, such as other causes and doubts that climate change is occurring.

In response, Nancy Rowe, one of four teachers developing the unit, devised lessons to show that climate change is not all caused by humans. "We want to be balanced," Rowe said.

4 arrested after man's beating at Dodger Stadium

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A minor fender bender in a Dodger Stadium parking lot over the weekend led to the beating of a driver and the arrest of four people more than a year after a San Francisco Giants fan was left with brain damage after an attack on opening day, police said Monday.

The latest attack occurred Sunday, when the victim, a man in his 20s, had a collision with another driver and three other men pinned him down, police said.

The other driver kicked and hit the victim in the head and face while he was on the ground, police Sgt. David Armas said.

"It was just a minor fender bender that just got totally out of hand," he said.

The victim, whose name was not released, had scrapes and cuts to his face, but his injuries were not life-threatening, Armas said. A woman in the victim's car who is eight months pregnant was not hurt, but she was examined at a hospital as a precaution, he said.

The four men, all in their 20s, were arrested for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon. They were not immediately identified.

Calls to Dodgers representatives seeking comment were not immediately returned Monday. The team said earlier this year that security was a "paramount priority."

The violence came after Giants fan Bryan Stow was beaten last year. Two men have pleaded not guilty to charges including mayhem and assault. Stadium officials beefed up security after that attack.

Stow's family has filed a lawsuit against the team and previous owner Frank McCourt, claiming security cutbacks were partially to blame for the attack.

The Dodgers were sold earlier this year to an ownership group that includes NBA legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson.

Dodgers security staff and uniformed off-duty Los Angeles police were at the stadium Sunday and responded quickly.

Cmdr. Andrew Smith said the officer who detained the suspects was an off-duty LAPD officer who was working in uniform for the Dodgers.

Dodger Stadium is one of the few places that LAPD allows officers to be hired by an outside organization and to wear their police uniform, Smith said.

Police were out in full force on opening day last month and reported a drop in the number of arrests and public drinking citations from opening day the previous year.

Police have said officers wearing rival team jerseys will be at every home game.

"We've maintained that high presence throughout the year," Smith said.

The beating occurred after the Dodgers' 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
