Chrome tops 310 million users, almost 100% growth over last year

Chrome tops 310 million users

Last year at Google IO, the company was bragging that it had racked up 160 million Chrome users. Since then, that number has nearly doubled, with the company claiming 310 million active users. Those consumers download roughly 1TB of data per day and type about 60 billion words according to Mountain View's crack team of analysts. The company even claims that 13 years of time have been saved thanks to the magic of Chrome's speedy rendering engine.

Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community

Howdy everyone! Xanfan here with another edition of Pure Imagination! This time around, I?m going to be discussing another title that was released on the launch of the Atari 2600. Some of the games that were made available at the start of the systems lifespan have gone down in history as some of the best for the console, decades after they were originally released. Combat. Surround. Air-Sea Battle. Even Video Olympics and Indy 500 have their own special places in some of our hearts. But Basic Math? (Or even more basic, just ?Math? when Sears released it?) Seriously? Let?s take a looksie. But before we even begin to examine the box art for this title, let?s take a quick look at the listing in the catalog:

?Do your homework while you?re watching TV? Solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems on your own TV. The computer let?s you know if you?re right. If you?re wrong, the correct answer flashes on the screen. Basic Math. The fun way to learn.? Well what are we waiting for? LET?S GO! While you have to give Atari credit for wanting to make at least one educational game for the console, this was going to be a tough sell. (And with what has been said about the work environments at Atari over the course of it?s existence, perhaps Basic Math was a little too difficult even for them at times?) By looking at the image of a somewhat stiff and stuck-up looking Albert Einstein type professor, showing you how to add two and two together, the catalog simply makes it look incredibly boring. One thing that I am noticing is that there is no Atari console hooked up to the TV set, and the TV looks a lot like the kind that you would see in a hotel room back in the day, with it on a pedestal. You know, like the kind that had the cable line built in since there was nothing else to connect to the set like there is today? So we have here, a kid staying in a hotel doing elementary school classes via teleconference? LET?S GO!

Both Atari and Sears did whatever it was that they could do with such a simple, educational title, to make it look like it was going to be one of the best games on the system. Atari makes it look like a magical place with butterflies (and a catcher with a big 2 on his sleeve), dragons with tongues in the shape of a number 3, a creepy looking wizard with a division problem on her gown, and fishes swimming with 92 minus 50. What makes me laugh is that this title is supposed to be targeted at an early elementary student age, yet they are showing math problems like 21?36? I didn?t get into that kinda math until later on in life. (No, not high school!) If nothing else, this game should be a biology lesson! With frogs looking confused, birds flying, even 2 sharks getting ready to eat the little fishes, it?s definitely a story about the food chain! (And if you want to talk about math, I always heard there was a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Money is where my math skills are at their prime, no pun intended. Shouldn?t they have added a leprechaun with a credit card showing the numbers?) And it seems that the Atari Artwork Staff seemed to forget someone? The girl with the ponytail next to the frog? She has a star as a hair clip? A STAR? Why couldn?t it have been like a seven or something? Unless you want to go back to BASIC Programming (the real stuff), and say that the star indicates multiplication. What kid knows that in 1977?

Sears took a very unique approach with it. For some reason, I simply cannot look at the box art for this without beginning to sing the theme to the original version of the PBS show ?The Electric Company?. We have a ginormous hobby horse costume with 4 kids riding on it, a marching band to the side of it, with an incredible amount of mathematical equations and symbols all over the place. Now what exactly does a marching band, with tubas, drums and trumpets have to do with math? What, is this music class now? (I used to love music class!) Digressing, just like the Atari version, there is the arithmetic that makes me shudder for ?basic math? with things like 42X3? But at least Sears remembered that fractions are math too! And there is that damn star again, in between the addition and subtraction words on the top of the horse. Again, everyone just looks so happy to be doing math! I?m not quite sure about the horse though. It?s got this crazy look on it?s face and eyes, as if it?s saying to people, ?Get these kids off me! This isn?t what I had in mind!? Or perhaps he?s trying to say, ?It?s a setup. Combat is right next to me! I mean it! Please put me down!?

So you might be saying to yourself, ?Okay, I know it?s an educational game and that it might be pretty boring. I?ll level with you. But there has to be at least some kind of interesting or fascinating game aspect to the title, right?? ?Wrong.? All it is, is a basic math quiz. That?s all. No game elements whatsoever. Quizzes are not fun. What makes me laugh is that Atari was talking about doing your homework while watching TV. Does that mean that if I played this game for let?s say a full hour, that I would have been exempt from doing my actual homework? If that was the case, then maybe I would have been thrilled with it! But the last time I checked, math homework of that time of your life was questions like, ?If Mary has 4 apples and David has 8 oranges, how many pears does Jackie have?? Or, ?If a train leaves 30th Street Station at 4:13PM and another train leaves Grand Central Station at 4:51PM, and both are traveling 35MPH, how much baggage can you bring with you?? Yeah, remember those? Where they fun?

Even Atari realized that this title was a mistake. So what do they do? They changed the name of the title from ?Basic Math? to ?Fun With Numbers? in 1980. The decided to keep the artwork of the original game, but just changed the title, nothing added (no pun intended), nothing taken away. I guess they figured that people would just think to themselves, ?I wonder what this game is about? Is it a number logic game? I love those!? Then when they took it home, they saw it was just an arithmetic drill. (Or even worse, what if you had the original title from the day of the launch, threw out the box so you forgot what the cover looked like, still had the game, and then re-bought it? I know I for one would be pretty pissed about it!) And if that wasn?t enough, Atari released it AGAIN in 1986 when some of the classic titles were being re-released to compete with Nintendo, after they failed to put the 7800 console on the market fast enough. Seriously? Of the entire Atari 2600 library that was available to them with no rights issues, they publish the game a third time? And they thought that would be a large enough hit that it could compete with Nintendo and Sega? Unreal.

Educational games are a thing that for some reason, just never take off. The only two games that were considered educational that really have a following are Number Munchers for the Apple II and The Oregon Trail. (The latter even just got released in a fresh format for the Nintendo Wii, DS and iOS.) But for the most part, they fail. It could be because video games are supposed to be an alternate reality, to get you away from the true reality of having to do things like homework. Yet, nearly every video game console has had educational games for it. Even the NES had Donkey Kong Junior Math, but at least that had SOME kind of entertainment value with moving Donkey Kong Junior all over the place. Personally, and this is no lie: I would have more fun (even now), learning about math from Sesame Street. Sesame Street was cool back in the day! With numbers, we obviously had Count Von Count! AH AH AH! And don?t forget about the big pinball game with the shiny ball hitting the bumpers with the big number at the end, and the funky music to go with it! And how can we forget that poor baker that announced how many pies he had in his hands, that always managed to slip on the steps and get covered in pie? Now THAT is a way to learn about numbers, not with this title!

Match Making For Boomers: Christian Dating in an Online World

Dating can make you feel both excited and sick all at the same time. For someone looking for a relationship, not just a hook up, dating holds not only the hope for a bright and loving future but also the possibility of pain and heartbreak. Dating is rough. People aren't always what they seem. When you start the dating process, you are usually on your best behavior. But many people try to be someone they aren't in order to convince the person they are dating that they have found exactly who they were looking for. But that doesn't result in a happy ending. Sure, you want to be on your best behavior...put your best foot forward. But you still want to be yourself. The goal is not to dupe someone into being in a relationship with you. The goal is to find someone who loves you for who you are and accepts you...faults and all.

Many single Christians find dating difficult. It is assumed that the church is the best place to find that special someone but that isn't always the case. Many churches have grown so large that many people end up feeling invisible, just a random face in the crowd.

Unfortunately, unless they take part in small group activities, getting to know others can be hard. There doesn't seem to be as much socializing after church as there used to be. Back in the day, the church sermon was just the beginning of your Sunday morning. After church there would be a potluck and the congregation would gather to get to know each other better and make lasting friendships. Nowadays, many churches have abandoned that tradition and therefore people can attend the same church for years and never really know anyone.

The world we live in is chaotic and moves at a hectic pace. It seems more and more individuals follow the "get in and get out" philosophy when it comes to going to Church. We all want to be fed, but we also have busy lives and things to do so we don't stick around afterward. So what is one to do when they want to fellowship with other believers and meet someone special who just may end up being their soul mate? The obvious choice is to make an effort in getting involved with your Church or small group. Most churches have a singles group that gets together at least once, maybe twice, a week. You can also look into outreach. Focus on helping others and you may just find what you are looking for when you stop looking. But if you are really wanting to jump into dating feet first, try online dating.

There are many online dating websites available on the Internet today. Some are geared toward the general public and others are created specifically for Christians.

Even though some single Christians may feel self-conscious about stepping into the world of Online Dating, there is no reason. Christian Dating is alive and well on the Internet and using the web to start meeting new Christian singles in your area is a fantastic way to socialize with people who take their faith as seriously as you do. Where else can you go to meet other Christians? If Church isn't filling that specific desire and obviously, going to bars and clubs to meet other Christian singles is not ideal, going to the Internet is the apparent choice.

My suggestion is to find a dating website that focuses on Christian Dating so that you know that the matches you get are Christian Singles. It is disappointing to see you have a match only to find out they have no interest in the Lord. The bible does state not to be yoked together with unbelievers so it is important to restrict your dating pool to other Christians. Obviously, befriending non-Christians is a good thing because you then have the opportunity to be a witness for Christ. But when it comes to giving your heart to someone else, you need to give it to someone who shares your belief and your faith. Hence, it is advisable to utilize a Christian Dating Website when beginning your online dating journey.

Once you find the right Christina dating site and being to create your profile, be honest. Be yourself. Take to heart the fact that you are special and unique and deserving to find happiness. Do you have your faults? Absolutely. We all do. We all have things about ourselves that we wish we could change and if there is something that you want to change about yourself..something that you want to work on...go for it. But don't hide who you are by trying to stuff yourself into someone else's ideal. Putting yourself out there is scary. Rejection is difficult to take but you can't look at rejection as you being rejected. You need to change your perspective. If someone does not or can not relate to you or make a connection with you...they aren't someone that you want to waste your time with. You move on and consider that you are one more person closer to finding that one individual who you can build a life with.

Are you guaranteed love? None of us are. But we all deserve a chance at having a fulfilling, loving relationship and there is nothing wrong in trying to jump-start the search by taking the step toward online Christian dating.

But I offer a word of caution. Don't put too much pressure on yourself and your date as you embark on the dating journey. A date is just a date. Don't go into a date with expectations that this person is going to be "The One". Just enjoy the night out. Enjoy the date at face value. Taking a more laid back attitude toward dating can help ease a lot of the unnecessary tension and stress that can come from dating. Dating can be fun. Enjoy the new experiences. Enjoy the company, the movie or the dinner. At the end of the day, if there is a connection there will be another date. If there isn't....then at least you got a good meal and you move on. A little self-confidence and perspective can go a long way toward success in dating.

Jonathan's passion is bringing people together from all walks of life. He believes that everyone deserves to find love and happiness.

Adam Goldman Is In With Web Series 'The Outs'

Show about gay men in New York has taken on 'a life of its own,' write/director/actor Goldman tells MTV News.
By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker

Adam Goldman appears on "The Outs"
Photo:

Adam Goldman is the writer, director and an actor on his own hit series, "The Outs." If you are young, gay and Internet-savvy (as most young gay men are these days), then you have probably heard of his show since the first three episodes are already out. If you are not any of those things, you should still check out the show.

Once the gay blogs (Out.com, Queerty, Towleroad, etc.) caught on to "The Outs," the show took on "a life of its own," according to Goldman, with viewers begging for more. The most interesting thing about the show, aside from its surprisingly high production value and its well-written dialogue, is that "The Outs" is an independently produced Web series that's making a sizable impact on a generation of viewers who are watching more and more of their entertainment online.

This six-episode dramatic Web series is funded entirely by successful Kickstarter campaigns and out-of-pocket expenses from the 26-year-old Bard College graduate and the creative team he assembled. "The Outs" tells the story of a couple of recent exes in New York and a good friend of theirs. The exes just so happen to be gay men.

Goldman explained the void he aimed to fill when he created the show. "I asked people, 'What's your favorite TV show about gay people?' Or 'name me a TV show [exclusively] about gay people,' " Goldman recalled. "Nobody really has an answer, and I think that's just sad."

Goldman noted that while TV has become more LGBT-friendly in the last few years, with a handful of excellent gay characters on "Modern Family," "Glee," "Smash," "True Blood," "American Horror Story" and more, none of these shows is centered around a gay story line.

"I think that what we've seen from the moment we started the project is a desire for it, and there's an audience for it," Goldman shared. "We just want to prove that there's space in media for stories like this. It's a story about people who happen to be gay, and we're super-proud and pleased to appeal to a gay audience."

As far as being on the edge of the online entertainment frontier, Goldman described his stance on the exciting position: "We're just trying to stretch the definition of what a Web series can be, so we're trying to shoot it as a TV show that happens to be online." As HD camera technology continues to improve and the costs of the equipment drop, piecing together a quality show is not the impossible dream that it was only several years ago, though the process is not easy to fund alone.

With the viewer base growing rapidly, Goldman and his team just surpassed their latest Kickstarter goal in just 48 hours. That puts the team ahead of its budget for the production of the show's upcoming fourth episode. Now is the time to keep an eye on Goldman and independent producers like him who are leading the new "TV on the Internet" movement. And if you haven't already, check out "The Outs" at www.theouts.tv.

News: British construction industry set to increase focus on Qatar

Doha, June 28 ? All eyes will be on London this month as it hosts the 2012 Olympic Games. But for Britain?s construction sector, the opening of the Games signals the end of its home market spike. With the UK now facing economic stagnation, attention is turning to the world?s fastest growing economy, Qatar. Over the next decade the Gulf state will develop US$140 billion (QR509 billion) worth of major projects in preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

For British companies wanting to tap these lucrative opportunities, MEED?s Qatar Infrastructure Projects conference, being held in London from July 2-5, will outline how best to pursue the investment potential of this dynamic non-energy sector. During the event, The Links Group ? leaders in company formation in the Middle East for 10 years ? will provide valuable insight to companies interested in entering the Qatari project market. According to The Links Group, setting up the right commercial presence in Qatar is paramount to succeeding in the local market, determining with whom and how a company trades.

John Martin St. Valery, founder and CEO of The Links Group, will present to delegates on July 4, the second day of the conference. Discussing successful strategies for setting up a business in Qatar, Martin St. Valery will dissect the options for establishing a commercial presence in the Gulf state, highlighting the benefits and pitfalls for each. ?We are very much looking forward to engaging with UK and European companies looking to capitalise on the many opportunities coming up in Qatar, and being able to participate in this exciting knowledge exchange about the Qatari market.

The tight timeline for Qatar 2022 requires an urgent investment in international expertise, engineering excellence and manpower ? all things the UK can easily export,? said Martin St. Valery. Operating in Qatar since 2005, The Links Group has seen a significant increase in the number of enquiries ? up by 50 percent from last year ? from organisations considering establishing a base in Qatar. As the country prepares for 2022, The Links Group anticipates unprecedented growth in British investments into Qatari infrastructure and foreign direct investments to surpass the country?s record of US$8.12 billion in 2009.

With sport being a central element to Qatar?s US$140 billion construction boom, investments will be mostly allocated to hotels, leisure, tourism, recreation, and infrastructure projects. While the conference will focus on Qatar?s planned mega projects, The Links Group says lucrative opportunities also abound for support services in each of these sectors. In addition to its conference presentation, The Links Group will host a special pre-conference masterclass on July 2, on how to do business in Qatar. Led by Stuart Curtis, Managing Director of The Links Group, and Wayne Merrick, General Manager Qatar, the masterclass will provide international delegates with a comprehensive understanding of the opportunities, challenges and ways of doing business in the buoyant Qatari market.

The masterclass will also include presentations from Edmund O?Sullivan, Chairman of MEED events; Alex Lambeth, Director at British Expertise; and Jason Majid, Corporate Partner at Clyde & Co Qatar. ?The masterclass session will explain the legal and regulatory framework for businesses in Qatar, how to effectively choose the right business vehicle, new developments in immigration and sponsorship and much more. We aim to highlight the immense potential for UK and other international businesses that are currently available in Qatar,? said Curtis.

Now in its second year, the MEED Qatar Infrastructure Projects conference will provide detailed information about all areas of Qatar?s non-energy economy as the country continues on its remarkable and comprehensive investment programme. The four-day event will be opened with a keynote by the Rt Hon. The Lord Marland, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Energy and Climate Change, and Chairman of the British Business Ambassadors (of UKTI).

Attracting a power panel of expert speakers, the event is set to provide an unrivalled networking experience for UK companies looking to expand abroad. To find out more on the vast opportunities in Qatar and how to capitalise in the Gulf, register for the Qatar Infrastructure Projects conference and connect with The Links Group for the ins and outs of the Qatari market. Qatar Infrastructure Projects will take place July 2-5, 2012 at the Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in London.

Benefits of Marketing throught Direct Mail | how to start a small ...

Posted by Becky on June 28th, 2012 |

When your business depends upon getting new leads regularly, there are some options that are open to you which can help you to achieve it. In today?s technologically advanced climate, there are many businesses that tend to focus on electronic means of contacting potential customers, such as through social media or email marketing. Although these can be effective, you should never overlook the possibility of direct mail and using those lists in order to increase the success of your business substantially. Here are some of the benefits that will be seen when you use this type of marketing and mail your list physically instead of automatically.

Perhaps one of the most important things that need to be considered when choosing direct mail over email marketing is that the majority of people look at their mail that they get in their mailboxes every day. Of course, some people are going to toss some of the information without looking at it but a vast majority of those individuals are going to sort through it without delay. This gets your message in front of those individuals easily and, compared to email marketing, the response can be substantially higher.?As a professional and the best mining machinery manufacturer in China, Hongxing Machinery is always ready to provide the superior jaw crusher and the best sand maker with the best quality and the most competitive price.

Another benefit to using direct mail is that you can specifically target groups of people that have an interest in what you are offering. It is important for you to consider this, not only when using direct mail but when purchasing the list of individuals that you will be mailing. The more focused the list is, the more likely it is going to be that you are going to see results from that list. ball mill:http://www.hx-china.com/14.html
ball mills:http://www.hx-crushers.com/p72.html

Have you thought about the customization that is possible when mailing people instead of using electronic means of contacting them? When most people gather email lists, they are only going to gather the most basic information from the potential customer. When you have a mailing list, you not only have the physical address but you often have their name and perhaps some other information as well. You can use this information in order to customize the mailing which will, in turn, increase the response. This is also something that should be considered when you are gathering a list or purchasing it from the company that generates leads.

Finally, you can measure the results of mailing those individuals in order to see if any changes need to be made to the mailing. Of course, you would always want to consider changing the copy and testing in order to increase the response. Some of the ways that you can track the response of a direct-mail campaign include sending out coupons with specific information that either needs to be filled out on your website or to be mailed back to your company. This can assist you in doing a split test as well, allowing you to easily see which is going to be more effective so that you can make those changes and send the future mailings to a larger list to increase the response.

Queen shakes hands with ex-IRA chief

BELFAST (Reuters) - The Queen shook the hand of former IRA guerrilla commander Martin McGuinness for the first time on Wednesday, drawing a line under a conflict that cost the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians, including that of her cousin.

The meeting with McGuinness, who is now the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, comes 14 years after the IRA ended its war against British rule in the province, and is one of the last big milestones in a peace process whose success has been studied around the world.

The queen met McGuinness, Northern Ireland's Unionist first minister Peter Robinson and Irish President Michael D.Higgins for just under 10 minutes behind closed doors in a theatre in a leafy suburb of Belfast cordoned off by hundreds of police.

McGuinness shook the gloved hand of the queen a second time as she left the theatre, this time in front of television cameras, but unlike other guests chose not to bow his head.

The queen's bright green outfit appeared to have been chosen with Ireland's national colour in mind, and McGuinness wished a smiling monarch well in Irish, saying "Slan agus beannacht", which he told her means "Goodbye and God speed".

There has been scattered opposition to the gesture of reconciliation from dissident Irish militants and from some of the IRA's victims. But the vast majority of the province's politicians backed the meeting, the first between the queen and a top member of the IRA or its former political wing, Sinn Fein.

"Today is a huge event and it is, in a sense, the ultimate handshake," John Reid, British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2001 to 2002, told the BBC.

"On all sorts of levels this is a hugely significant step but it is only one more step in a long process. This may take generations - to get back to absolute reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland."

OBSTACLE REMOVED

Ireland's president said the handshake was "something that had to be done" to remove an obstacle to reconciliation. Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said the gesture was symbolic but added that "the journey isn't near completion".

A few hours later, the queen waved to crowds from an open-topped car at a celebration of her Diamond Jubilee attended by over 20,000 people - a stark contrast to the armoured limousines that have been a mandatory precaution on previous visits.

The queen regularly meets senior Unionist politicians, Protestants who want Northern Ireland to stay inside the United Kingdom, but not Sinn Fein - the largest party representing Catholic nationalists who want a united Ireland.

McGuinness is a hero to Republican hardliners, but has long been a hate figure to Unionists, many of whom harbour deep suspicions about his past.

He admits he was on the front line in the war with British forces, including on Bloody Sunday in 1972, when troops shot dead 13 unarmed protesters, but says he never killed anyone.

A British report said that McGuinness probably was armed with a submachine gun on Bloody Sunday, but did nothing to provoke the massacre. He has said he left the IRA in 1974, but most historians believe he was active for most of its campaign.

For the queen and her consort Prince Philip, who shook McGuinness's hand more cursorily, the conflict had a personal edge.

The queen's cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was also Philip's uncle, was killed by the IRA in 1979 with three others, including his 14-year-old grandson, when his boat was blown up while he was on holiday in Ireland.

More than 1,000 members of the British security forces were among 3,600 people killed during the 30 years of the "Troubles".

McGuinness told the queen that he agreed with comments she made last year that all victims of the conflict should be remembered, according to a source who was at the meeting.

"STILL A REPUBLICAN"

McGuinness said on Tuesday that, while he represented people who had been badly hurt by British state violence, he was also big enough to understand that the queen and other families in Britain had also lost loved ones.

Asked by reporters after the meeting if his convictions had changed, he said he was "still a Republican".

Sinn Fein, which has become increasingly popular south of the Irish border as the main party opposing an EU/IMF bailout, is keen to bolster its image as a mainstream party and distance itself from a violent past that alienates many southern voters.

It still wants a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of Britain, but in the short term its aim is to be in government in the north and south simultaneously.

Only last year, Sinn Fein rejected invitations to attend events during the queen's landmark visit to the Irish capital Dublin, the first by a British monarch since the republic won independence from Britain in 1921.

Some Republicans branded McGuinness a traitor for meeting a queen who is also commander-in-chief of Britain's armed forces.

"People are not unhappy that someone is shaking her hand, just not him. He's a hypocrite," said Martin, a 42-year-old unemployed man who said he and his friends had got criminal records defending their neighbourhood in working-class Belfast.

"He sent people out to fight. To die. And now he's putting on a suit and shaking her hand? I don't want war (but) this shouldn't have happened till the next generation."

With splinter groups continuing to attack British targets, security forces say the risk of an attack is at its highest level since the Good Friday peace agreement was signed in 1998.

Nine police suffered minor injuries on Tuesday night when they were pelted with petrol bombs and other missiles.

Teens surf web on computers, not smartphones ... - Tech Gadget Info

But, despite the many people seemingly glued to their smartphones , the study showed that teens are having trouble with their internet connection, they're more likely to need good old fashioned computer and laptop repair, since they reportedly access the web via these heavier ? Comparatively, out of all of individuals between 13 and 17 who took the online survey on general internet usage, only 13.48 percent went online with a smartphone and just 5 percent did so on a tablet device.

Warren Bobrow's Cocktail Hour: HEAT WAVE cooler? | Cocktail ...

I couldn?t wait for this heatwave to start.? Really.? All year long I?ve wanted to sweat.? That deep down burn that flows through my body.? Sweat flowing from my brow into my eyes, my back soaked on the leather seats of my car.? Yeah, you know what I?m ?talking? about.? A real summer heat wave.? You cannot escape.? It?s everywhere.? An egg could be fried on the sidewalk- that kind of heat.

Fortunately I?m here to cool off your frazzled demeanor.? What is that look on your face?? You don?t believe me?

My good friends you are in luck.? I?ve created at this hour of 9:56 am on Thursday a most beguiling of cocktails.? One that will, as I like to put it, mystify and challenge even the most robust of imbibers.? This one my friends garners a 5 out of 5.? Danger Level 5.? I?m getting numb just smelling it.

The ice is as important as the rest of the cocktail.? I recommend spending about 12 bucks on a silicone ice cube tray from Williams-Sonoma.? True there are dozens of other items for sale in the store that I lust over, but for this cocktail, I need a large ice cube that melts- very, very slowly.? Ice is one of my favorite topics.

I?m a fan of liquors from the Near East.? I mean Greece and Turkey.? Raki in Turkey, Ouzo in Greece?

The Moors enjoyed liqueurs and preparations that used anise seeds.? In their attempted conquest of the world, the liquors that they enjoyed in turn influenced others cultures and peoples in the world.? Hence you find Raki in Turkey, Ouzo in Greece, Pastis in France and? Aquavit from the Scandinavian countries.? But what does Aquavit have to do with anise?? Is it because anise is a seed and caraway is a seed as well?? Sure, it?s a stretch, but in flavor transmittal, a stretch is fantastic.. Anise and Caraway just work together.

Another hidden ingredient, at least in the Near East is Rose Water.? The essence of roses can be quite sensual.? They stimulate the feelings of eroticism. I love rose in a cocktail, especially the rose simple syrup from Royal Rose.? I?ve fallen hard for their syrups, but for the summer- in my opinion, nothing goes better with Tenneyson Absinthe than rose syrup.

Blueberries from Driscoll?s.? Organically grown are the base for my cocktail.? I?ve taken these absolutely ravishing blueberries and muddled them with some of the Royal Rose simple syrup of roses until they stain the side of the mixing glass with their juices.? The aroma of blue along with rose is intoxicating to say the least.

Tenneyson Absinthe, made in France with care is clear as a glass window in the perfume grade, cut glass bottle.? But add some seltzer water and the formerly pristine color takes on a shade of cream and blue fruits.? The Aquavit from House Spirits in Portland, Oregon is a hidden Umami flavor.? You sense it.? It?s there.. but soon, very soon you will feel no pain at all.

It?s now 10:32 am.? The air is brisk but steadily heating up.? Soon the leaves outside will begin to wilt.? It?s a true heat wave. I cannot wait to sip this cocktail in the blaze of the summer heat.

You will crave one too.? Crave is not even the word I seek.? Yearn is better.? Hunger.? Thirst.

Bitters should finish this cocktail.? A punch of depth to center that little third eye in the middle of your forehead.? Why the third eye?? So you can see.? Because with your eyes closed (and they will be soon) you?ll need some way to guide you on your spiritual path to enlightenment. My friend Bill York at Bitter End Bitters makes a perfectly respectable Moroccan Bitters.? Woven with the flavors of the Middle East, this salubrious squirt of bitters it more than able to stand up to the task of binding the Absinthe to the Aquavit.

A splash of seltzer water will finish.? And keep you from walking into doors.

One cocktail at a time.? By my patient hand.? Cheers and stay cool if you are able.

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps will have their first showdown on the opening night of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

The world's top swimmers advanced to Monday's final of the 400-meter individual medley, a loaded race that also includes the silver medalist from last year's world championships, Tyler Clary. Only the top two earn a spot on the team for London.

Lochte, the defending world champion, was the top qualifier in morning preliminaries with a time of 4 minutes, 10.66 seconds. Phelps was next fastest, cruising through his preliminary heat in 4:14.72. Clary was fourth-fastest at 4:15.88.

Phelps is the world-record holder and won the 400 IM at the last two Olympics, but he vowed to drop the grueling event after Beijing. He brought it back over the past year and said he's known "for a while" that he would be in the race at Omaha. The only stumble came beforehand, when Phelps realized he had the wrong cap. He found a plain white model that worked just fine.

"It felt fairly relaxed," said Phelps, a 14-time Olympic gold medalist who plans to retire after these games. "I'm happy."

Lochte was pleased with his effort, though he knows he'll need to go even faster to beat Phelps. He expects his rival to put in a much better time in the evening.

"That was the easiest 4:14 he's ever done, that I've seen in the whole entire world," Lochte said. "It looked really, really smooth for him. Tonight's definitely going to be a dogfight. It's not just going to be me and Michael. It's going to be Tyler Clary, too. It's definitely going to be a fight."

Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, was coy about his plans before the trials but said he's known since a March meet in Indianapolis that Phelps was going to compete in the 400 IM.

"He did one and it's really the best one he's ever done in a season," Bowman said. "He was like, 'Man, it would be a shame not to do this.' We'll know a lot more tonight whether that was a good decision."

Clary expected Phelps to scratch from the event, which would have made it much easier to qualify for a spot on the Olympic team. Now, Clary has to beat either Lochte or Phelps to compete in the 400 IM in London.

"It will definitely be a more interesting race now," Clary said, managing a slight grin. "All I can do is control myself. It doesn't matter to me who's in the heat. I'm going to go out and swim the race that I've got in my mind. I think that'll be good enough."

Lochte is eager to face Phelps as many times as possible in Omaha before they resume their rivalry in London.

"Of course, I want to win," Lochte said. "I hate not winning. I love to win. But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. I'm not going to beat myself up over it."

Dana Vollmer, coming back from the disappointment of missing the Olympics four years ago, was the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly. She posted the fastest time ever in the United States (56.59), breaking a 12-year-old mark, and has her sights on Sarah Sjoestroem's world record (56.06), which was set in 2009 during the era of high-tech, rubberized suits.

"It's always in the back of my mind," said Vollmer, the defending world champion in the 100 fly. "I definitely want to do a 55."

Vollmer, who made the 2004 Olympics as a 16-year-old, battled injuries and medical problems for much of the past decade, but she's healthy now and thriving with a new diet.

"I feel better than I did at worlds," she said. "That race felt good, but I still feel like I didn't put all I have into it knowing it's just the prelims. To be at that time, it's definitely a good sign for my next swims."

Back to the Land: New Certification Program Focuses on Farm Animal Welfare and Consumer Education

Farmers forsake intensive confinement systems for more humane models

All Animals magazine July/August 2012

by Karen E. Lange

We wanted cheap food, and the market delivered?with ruthless efficiency. Past the point where it was healthy for us, or safe for the food supply, or good for the environment. Past the point where it benefited rural communities, or was in any way sustainable. And far past the point where the animals involved were treated like living, feeling beings.

Change came fast and seemingly irreversibly. Hens were jammed into small cages; chickens bred to quickly grow big breasts, their bones often unable to support the weight; sows imprisoned in spaces barely larger than their bodies; cattle crowded onto huge feedlots where they stood exposed to the cruelest weather. Farms transformed into CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations). To keep animals alive and profitable in the midst of the crowding, stress, filth, and uncollected corpses, farmers cut off beaks and tails, and administered a never-ending regimen of antibiotics. Staring at the shrink-wrapped packages in the grocery store, most people had no idea of their true cost.

Learn about the rise and fall of extreme confinement ?

Then came the obesity epidemic, and food scares, and runoff from manure pits, and undercover footage showing what was actually happening on the mega-farms that had taken over U.S. agriculture. Though we still want cheap food, increasingly, we also want meat that is safe, environmentally friendly, and produced in a more compassionate way. More and more, we?re even willing to pay more for it.

But how well an animal has been treated is a lot harder for consumers to determine than price per pound. And the nation?s food conglomerates know this, hiding the proliferation of factory farms behind idyllic red-barn imagery and appealing descriptions on product labels.

Enter Global Animal Partnership?s 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating system. Launched in 2009 as a pilot program with Whole Foods Market, the initiative?which certifies farms and ranches raising cattle, chickens, pigs, and turkeys?provides clear choices for grocery shoppers and markets for producers who reject the profit-at-any-cost model of intensive confinement.

?We think we can change agriculture,? says Edmund LaMacchia, a global vice president at Whole Foods.

Savvy consumers may already be familiar with other labels?Food Alliance Certified, Certified Humane, and Animal Welfare Approved are just a few examples. What distinguishes GAP is its tiered program that certifies farms at six levels of welfare and its diverse leadership of producers, academics, retailers, and animal protection advocates from The HSUS and other organizations. The levels mandate progressively higher welfare practices, starting with Step 1?s requirement prohibiting confinement in cages and crates and leading to Step 5+, which requires on-site or local slaughter (saving animals from the stress of transport).

GAP works with third-party auditors and certifiers to assess compliance with its standards. The auditors visit farms every 15 months and inspect not only animals and buildings but feed tags, medical records, and veterinary and other receipts. ?You can?t fake it,? says Joe Maxwell, The HSUS?s director of rural outreach and development and a Missouri pig farmer who?s certified at Step 3, a label that means his animals have daytime access to the outdoors.

By allowing entry into the system at more attainable levels, GAP motivates a broad spectrum of farmers and ranchers to earn the higher ratings that will further improve welfare and presumably bring premiums for their products. ?Even in our early years, we already work with producers who have moved up the step ladder,? says GAP executive director Miyun Park, a former HSUS vice president of farm animal welfare.

About 1 percent of the 9 billion animals raised each year in this country for meat come from farms certified under GAP standards, says Steven Gross, chairman of Farm Forward and a member of GAP?s board of directors. That represents 144 million animals raised each year on 1,815 farms, and there?s plenty of room for growth: Step 1, which gets animals out of cages and crates, and Step 2, which adds environmental enrichment, can be achieved by both big and small farms that still keep their animals indoors. On the demand side, an estimated 20 percent of food sold is purchased by people with what marketers call ?lifestyles of health and sustainability??just the sort who have an interest in animal welfare.

?We?re seeing customers buying up the ratings scale at a quicker rate than I thought we would,? Whole Foods? LaMacchia says.?

CO2 Credit Exchange Opens in Texas

The Texas Climate & Carbon Exchange, which allows companies to voluntarily offset emissions by buying credits, opened Thursday in Austin through a partnership with Australia-based Carbon Trade Exchange.

TCCX opened with one client, the city of Beppu, Japan,?Dallas Morning News reported. The exchange doesn?t yet have any customers who want to sell carbon credits, DMN reported.

Carbon Trade Exchange, which has more than 145 members in 22 countries, will provide the electronic trading platform technology and infrastructure to TCCX. The Texas exchange?will offer a lower membership fee than exchanges in countries that regulate greenhouse gases.

Texas emits more greenhouse gases than any other state, according to EPA data. The exchange will provide brokerage services for Texas companies and allow these business to offset their emissions and become carbon-neutral, CTX said.

The Texas exchange will promote the origination as well as the selling and purchasing of carbon credits on the CTX global exchange platform. The carbon credits being traded will originate from projects in Texas as well as the rest of the United States and the world.

Carbon credit exchanges and emissions derivatives schemes have opened with mixed success?in other regions of the United States.

Financial markets firm Intercontinental Exchange Inc. announced in August 2011 that it would shut down its emissions derivatives trading platform Chicago Climate Futures Exchange. The Chicago exchange, which was losing money, closed due to lack of demand and uncertainty over whether the government would adopt a federal carbon reduction plan.

ICE has since launched 21 over-the-counter North American emissions contracts, which mirror products lost when the futures exchange closed. The products include derivative linked to emissions reductions plans in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut.

As the Chicago exchange floundered, GreenX and ICE launched futures contracts tied to the California carbon market. The?California?Carbon Allowance opened in August 2011, one month earlier than planned due to strong customer demand and increasing over-the-counter activity. California?s cap-and-trade system sets limits on carbon emissions starting this year, with enforcement starting in 2013.

Britain Bans Nike's Twitter Campaign for Euro 2012

English footballers breaking rules? Blimey! The U.K. advertising watchdog?must be a Scot, it's so nippy and feisty!?has banned a Nike Twitter campaign after ruling that tweets sent from the personal accounts of soccer stars Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere were not clearly labeled as advertising. Nike begged to differ, noting that the #MakeItCount hashtag and a corporate URL appeared in the tweets. The watchdog wasn't inclined to throw the company a bone: "We considered there was nothing obvious in the tweets to indicate they were Nike marketing communications." This marks the first time the Advertising Standards Authority had banned a Twitter campaign. From Nike's point of view, the dogfight's already yielded enough global publicity to ensure that the effort exceeds its #gooooooooaaaaal!
