Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) watches Claire (Natalie Zea) on the season finale of "The Following."

What just happened? Things finally calmed down on Fox's serial killer series, "The Following," on Monday night, but it was more like the calm before the storm.

Sure, it seemed as though Ryan had saved the day, saved Claire and saved a good portion of humanity by battling Joe to his explosive end -- well, his presumed end. That wasn't, however, the end of the episode.

There was still a finale twist in store -- complete with a decoy.

Emma was still out there after all, and she was none too happy to hear the news about Joe. But in the last moments, someone else upstaged her.

Just as Ryan and Claire were ready to settle down to a relaxing, killer-free meal, Molly -- Joe's supporter and Ryan's ex -- barged in and stabbed both Ryan and Claire!

No, really.

And now the long wait for season two begins.

Jeb Bush says ?conventional wisdom? wrong, GOP thriving in states

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is warning Republicans to ignore the ?conventional wisdom? that says the party ?is in decline.? Instead, Bush says, look to the states where the countries 30 Republican governors are leading ?the way forward for the GOP.?

Writing for the conservative Rare website Monday, Bush highlighted Republican governors and their accomplishments in creating ?business-friendly climates to grow jobs.?

Bush pointed to the following 13 governors as examples of ?the success of conservative principles? ? what Bush calls ?the best kept secret in American politics:?

  • Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal
  • Former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels
  • Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder
  • Florida Gov. Rick Scott
  • Texas?Gov. Rick Perry
  • Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett
  • New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie
  • Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell
  • New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez
  • Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval
  • Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker
  • Ohio Gov. John Kasich
  • Oklahoma?Gov. Mary Fallin

Those governors, Bush wrote, are ?creating a climate where entrepreneurs are welcome, people are getting back to work and schools are focusing on the needs of children instead of unions and bureaucracies.?

Bush cited a Pew poll showing that while only 28 percent of Americans view the federal government favorably, 57 percent are happy with their state governments.

?Media outlets thrive on conflict, and sometimes we are all too willing to oblige,? Bush wrote. ?As Republicans, we must focus on a positive message about our success and our vision. Instead of spending all our time and resources saying why President Obama and the Democrats? ideas are wrong for Americans, we must provide clearly articulated alternatives.?

Mississippi man makes court appearance in ricin letters case

By Robbie Ward

TUPELO, Mississippi (Reuters) - A Mississippi martial arts instructor suspected of mailing letters containing the deadly poison ricin to President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials appeared in federal court on Monday for a brief hearing.

James Everett Dutschke, 41, was arrested on Saturday in Tupelo, Mississippi, after authorities searched his home and former business. He is charged with developing and possessing ricin and attempting to use the poison as a weapon.

Wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, Dutschke responded briefly to a judge's questions during the eight-minute hearing in Oxford, Mississippi.

The judge, S. Allan Alexander, later granted an oral motion to keep an affidavit detailing the charges against Dutschke under seal until a detention hearing set for Thursday morning.

Dutschke has denied having any involvement with the ricin letters and said he cooperated with federal officials during their searches.

He faces a possible life sentence if convicted.

Dutschke's arrest came nearly two weeks after suspicious letters intended for Obama and U.S. Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi were intercepted. Tests showed they were tainted with ricin, a highly lethal poison made from castor beans. A separate ricin-laced letter was also sent to a Mississippi judge.

Authorities initially arrested another Mississippi man, Kevin Curtis, in the case but dropped the charges last week after a search of his house failed to turn up any evidence of his involvement.

Dutschke's name surfaced at a court hearing when Curtis' attorney suggested someone framed her client and mentioned a running feud between the two men.

He also faces charges in a separate case related to an April 1 indictment for fondling three children between ages 7 and 16, from 2007 to 2013, according to court records.

The ricin-tainted letters were discovered just days after the bombings of the Boston Marathon and during the massive police manhunt for those responsible, helping to fuel anxiety in the United States, especially in the capital.

The case rekindled memories of the 2001 U.S. anthrax attacks that killed five people and puzzled investigators for years. The Justice Department later said that a U.S. scientist who committed suicide was responsible.

Draft was light on glamour, heavy on intrigue

Minnesota went all in with three first-round picks.

Super Bowl champion Baltimore went for replacements for Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.

The New York Jets added to their quarterback uncertainty by taking Geno Smith in the second round.

Teams loaded up on linemen, making the big and beefy guys this year's stars.

The 2013 NFL draft was light on glamour at the skill positions, but heavy on intrigue (when would Manti Te'o go?) and burly bodies able to either get after or protect all those pricey passers.

Denver Broncos boss John Elway called the draft "deep in the trenches.

"It wasn't sexy, but there were a lot of good football players in this draft, he said. "It was deep in the other-than-glitzy positions."

The first round included 18 linemen, one quarterback and, for the first time since 1963, no running backs.

"That's a lot of love for the big boys up front, which we usually don't get," said No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher, an offensive tackle from Central Michigan taken by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Here's a breakdown:

VALIANT VIKINGS

Nobody made more noise in this year's draft than the Vikings.

Coming of a surprising run to the playoffs spearheaded by MVP Adrian Peterson, they became the first team since the Rams in 2001 to have three first-round picks. They traded four selections to New England to move up and take Tennessee receiver Cordarrelle Patterson after grabbing Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd and Florida State cornerback Xavier Rhodes.

That's pushing all your chips into the center of the table.

"I don't think it could've worked out any better for the caliber of players we got coming into our program," Vikings GM Rick Spielman said after addressing three of his four major needs in a dizzying 30-minute span. "I'm very excited."

When the Vikings finally got back on the clock Saturday, Spielman addressed his other big need by grabbing Penn State linebackers Gerald Hodges in the fourth round and Michael Mauti in the seventh.

With that, Minnesota served notice that they're coming after Aaron Rodgers and everyone else in 2013.

QB CONUNDRUM

The Jets are testing out the old saying you can never have too many quarterbacks.

After Buffalo surprised nearly everyone by picking Florida State's EJ Manuel as the only QB in the first round (at No. 16), the Jets pulled off their own stunner by selecting West Virginia's Geno Smith in the second round, at No. 39.

Coach Rex Ryan's three-ring circus at QB now includes a half dozen passers. The others are Mark Sanchez, David Garrard, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy and Matt Simms.

"I hope they're all thinking, 'Hey, I have an opportunity to go win a job,'" Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said.

Smith certainly is.

"My goal is to be a franchise quarterback," he said. "But as of now, there's lots of work to be done."

Smith put up great numbers in college but also had accuracy issues and fumbled the ball an alarming 32 times, and scouts also questioned his overall skills and leadership in some pre-draft reports.

"You know what," Smith said, "critics don't have a pick."

SUPER SELECTIONS

Will the Harbaugh brothers be making plans for another family reunion in February? Both Baltimore and San Francisco restocked for another Super Bowl run.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome launched a defensive makeover after Lewis retired and Reed led a free agency exodus following their title, signing with Houston. Newsome used his first four picks and six of 10 selections on defenders, beginning with safety Matt Elam and linebacker Arthur Brown, who have some huge cleats to fill.

San Francisco's 11-player haul included defensive back Eric Reid, defensive end Tank Carradine and tight end Vance McDonald, but the most intriguing pick was that of fourth-rounder Marcus Lattimore. The South Carolina running back suffered a career-threatening right knee injury last season just one year after tearing ligaments in his left knee.

San Francisco took a similar gamble several years ago when it spent a third-round selection on Frank Gore, who had suffered torn ligaments in each of his knees a year apart at the University of Miami, but has made the Pro Bowl four times and is the franchise's all-time leading rusher.

"I love the aggressive mental approach he has taken through this whole process, but we're going to slow down the aggressive physical things and make sure Marcus is 100 percent healthy before he goes out there on the field," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "If he doesn't play this year, then he doesn't play this year."

REMAKING ROSTERS

The heavy turnover after last season ? eight new coaches and seven new general managers ? meant there were plenty of newbies making draft decisions.

Led by the Chiefs new brain trust of coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey, eight of the top 11 picks were made by teams that had turnover at the decision-making positions as the Jaguars, Eagles, Browns, Cardinals, Bills, Jets and Chargers also had a first-year coach and/or general manager.

Of those, the biggest splash was made by the Bills when GM Buddy Nix gave new coach Doug Marrone a new QB by trading out of the eighth spot and selecting Florida State's Manuel.

"If we can develop this guy, he has the talent to take you to the dance," Nix said.

Other than the decision to take a chance on Manti Te'o in the second round, the Chargers rookie tandem of GM Tom Telesco and coach Mike McCoy added right tackle D.J. Fluker of Alabama with the 11th pick and Cal wide receiver Keenan Allen in the third round, two players who should help embattled QB Philip Rivers right away.

BUSTS OR BRONZE

For all the money and hours spent watching tape and workouts, evaluating players' bodies and minds, recording height, weight, speed and strength, the draft remains an inexact science. There will be first-round busts like always and maybe some undrafted guys end up with bronze busts in Canton, Ohio.

"You never really know because you're dealing with humans," Elway said.

The Broncos have had at least one college free agent make the 53-man roster coming out of camp every year since 2004, but it's going to be hard for any of Denver's 15 undrafted additions to make it this year after Denver loaded up in free agency and the draft after a 13-3 season.

Elway wasn't called on to close the sale on any of the free agent candidates. He learned his lesson when he bought his first car dealership many years ago and a salesman called him in to seal the deal.

"So I go in and the guy says, 'You've got a lot more money than I do. Why would I want to pay you $1,000?" Elway recounted. "I said, 'OK, you can have it for $500.'

"So, ever since then, I've stayed out of the negotiating business."

California police search for suspect in fatal stabbing of girl

(Reuters) - A manhunt was under way on Sunday in a northern California suburb for a suspect who authorities say stabbed a 9-year-old girl to death in a suburban home and fled, officials said.

Residents of Valley Springs, California, 60 miles southeast of Sacramento, were being warned on Sunday morning to remain inside their homes with their doors locked as investigators fanned out across the region, hunting for the suspected attacker.

Authorities said the victim's 12-year-old brother encountered an intruder in his home on Friday afternoon and the suspect fled, according to KCRA, a local television news station.

The boy went to check on his sister and found her stabbed. She was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, KCRA reported.

The Calaveras County Sheriff's Department said in statement released on Sunday morning that the suspect may be armed and dangerous.

The department said multiple law enforcement agencies are on the lookout for a white or Hispanic man, about 6-feet tall and described as "muscular," with longish gray hair. They said he was wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and blue pants.

The victim's identity has not been released.

Ms. Tsarnaeva, a naturalized US citizen who moved back to Russia a few years ago, has best been known until now as the most passionate defender of her two sons, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar, up to the point of insisting that they were "framed" because they were Muslims. Now investigators may want to look into what role she may have played, if any, in the radicalization process that may have led her two sons to carry out the Boston Marathon bombing almost two weeks ago.

Tsarnaeva was reportedly added to the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment (TIDE)?database in 2011 at the request of US intelligence agencies. That list, which held about 750,000 names at the time, is used to compile the consolidated Terrorist Watchlist?used as the main reference tool by airlines and law enforcement agencies. It is believed her name, and that of her son Tamerlan, were appended to the list after the Russian FSB security service appealed for more information about the pair to the FBI and the CIA and warned of their growing radicalization.?

In recent days the Russians have also turned over wiretaps of conversations between Tsarnaeva, who was by that time back living in her native Dagestan, and her son Tamerlan in Boston. In one they reportedly discuss "jihad" in a general way. In another, Tsarnaeva is recorded talking with someone who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case.

In his annual town hall meeting with the Russian public last Thursday, President Vladimir Putin called for stepped up security cooperation?between the US and Russia in the wake of the Boston tragedy. He downplayed any links between Russia and the Boston bombers, and added "to our great regret" Russian security forces lacked any "operative information" that they might have shared with US law enforcement in the run up to the attack.

Tsarnaeva is an ethnic Avar, one of the largest groups in Russia's multi-national, but solidly Muslim, mountain republic of Dagestan?which abuts the Caspian Sea. Dagestan has been wracked for over a decade by a growing Islamist insurgency that has made parts of the republic a no-go zone even for law enforcement.

Older Boston bombing suspect spoke of "jihad" with mother: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The older suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings spoke to his mother about "jihad" in a 2011 phone call secretly recorded by Russian officials, CBS News reported on Saturday.

U.S. authorities learned of the wiretapped discussion between Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of two ethnic Chechen brothers suspected of carrying out the April 15 blasts in Boston, and Zubeidat Tsarnaeva within the last few days, CBS said.

It provided no other details.

CNN quoted U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder as saying that the matter was "ongoing" and that he could not comment on it.

Jihad can refer to a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty, or to a Muslim's personal struggle in devotion to the faith.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died in a shootout with police in Watertown, Massachusetts, last week.

His brother, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured and has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction and malicious destruction of property in connection with the Boston attack, which killed three people and wounded 264.

Tsarnaeva and the suspects' father told reporters on Thursday in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's Dagestan region, that they believed their surviving son was innocent.

Attention has turned to whether U.S. officials missed signs that Tamerlan Tsarnaev may have posed a security threat, including a warning from Russia that he might be an Islamic militant.

The FBI interviewed him in 2011 but did not find enough cause to continue an investigation.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev's name was listed on the U.S. government's highly classified central database of people it views as potential threats, sources close to the bombing investigation have said.

Law enforcement authorities do not closely monitor the list, which includes about 500,000 people.

Movie review: 'Poppy Hill' a warm look at Japan's past | The Salt ...

"From Up on Poppy Hill" ? Umi (right, voiced by Sarah Bolger) and Shun (voiced by Anton Yelchin) ride through Yokohama, circa 1963, in this animated tale directed by Goro Miyazaki (son of the legendary Hayao Miyazaki). (Opens April 26) Studio Ghibly/GKIDS

There?s a welcome gentility to "From Up on Poppy Hill," the latest import from Japan?s Studio Ghibli animation house.

In Yokohama in the early 1960s, everyone is eagerly preparing for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and that means cleaning out the old and making room for the new. Schoolgirl Umi (voiced by Sarah Bolger) spends her days looking backward, raising semaphore flags to signal her father, a ship captain presumed dead in the Korean War. When not tending to her grandmother?s boarding house, Umi gets involved in the rescue of her school?s soon-to-be-demolished clubhouse, home to chemistry nerds, philosophers and the campus literary weekly ? which is edited by Shun (voiced by Anton Yelchin), with whom Umi shares a mutual attraction.

HHH

?From Up On Poppy Hill?

Opens Friday, April 26, at the Tower Theatre; rated PG for mild thematic elements and some incidental smoking images; 91 minutes.

Director Goro Miyazaki (son of the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, director of "Spirited Away" and "Ponyo") creates a warm nostalgia piece, a look at school days that is humorous and poignant. Those expecting the fantastical surreal animation that is Ghibli?s trademark will be disappointed, but Miyazaki?s graceful images and expressive characters are delightful.

Court says pot smokers can be fired, even in Colo.

DENVER (AP) ? Medical and recreational marijuana may be legal in Colorado, but employers in the state can lawfully fire workers who test positive for the drug, even if it was used off duty, according to a court ruling Thursday.

The Colorado Court of Appeals found there is no employment protection for medical marijuana users in the state since the drug remains barred by the federal government.

"For an activity to be lawful in Colorado, it must be permitted by, and not contrary to, both state and federal law," the appeals court stated in its 2-1 conclusion.

The ruling concurs with court decisions in similar cases elsewhere and comes as businesses attempt to regulate pot use among employees in states where the drug is legal. Colorado and Washington state law both provide for recreational marijuana use. Several other states have legalized medical use.

The patchwork of laws across the nation and state-federal conflict has left the issue unclear. Based on this ruling, employees who use pot in Colorado do so at their own risk. In Arizona, however, workers cannot be terminated for lawfully using medical marijuana, unless it would jeopardize an employer's federal licensing or contracts.

The Colorado case involves Brandon Coats, 33, a telephone operator for Englewood, Colo.-based Dish Network LLC. Coats was paralyzed in a car crash as a teenager and has been a medical marijuana patient in the state since 2009.

He was fired in 2010 for failing a company drug test, though his employer didn't claim he was ever impaired on the job.

Coats sued to get his job back, but a trial court dismissed his claim in 2011. The judge agreed with Dish Network that medical marijuana use isn't a "lawful activity" covered by a state law intended to protect cigarette smokers from being fired for legal behavior off the clock. According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, more than half of all states have such laws.

Dish Network did not return a call seeking comment.

Coats' attorney, Michael Evans, plans to appeal and issued a statement saying the ruling has wide implications.

"This case not only impacts Mr. Coats, but also some 127,816 medical marijuana patient-employees in Colorado who could be summarily terminated even if they are in legal compliance with Colorado state law," Evans noted.

Judge John Webb dissented in the split decision, saying he couldn't find a case addressing whether Colorado judges should consider federal law in determining the meaning of a Colorado statute.

Marijuana supporters say the courts are discriminating against them because Colorado's Lawful Off-Duty Activities law, the provision protecting cigarette smokers, prevents workers from being fired for legal behavior off the clock.

The court said lawmakers could act to change the law to protect people who use marijuana, but there have been no plans to do that at the state Capitol.

Coats told reporters Thursday afternoon that he obtained a prescription for medical marijuana to deal with debilitating muscle spasms that would otherwise prevent him from working. He has been looking for a job ever since being dismissed by Dish.

"I'm not going to get better anytime soon," said Coats. "I need the marijuana, and I don't want to go the rest of my life without holding a job."

The Washington state Supreme Court also has found that workers can be fired for using marijuana, even if authorized by the state's medical marijuana law.

Last year, a federal appeals court ruled against a cancer survivor in Battle Creek, Mich., who was fired from his job with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. after failing a drug test for marijuana. Joseph Casias had a medical marijuana card and said he used pot to alleviate symptoms of an inoperable brain tumor.

According to the Marijuana Policy Project, the California Supreme Court also has ruled that people could be fired for testing positive for marijuana. The Legislature passed a bill to change that in 2008, but it was vetoed.

Pan-Jam plotting new strategy for next 10-30 years - Business ...

Steven Jackson, Business Reporter

Pan-Jamaican Investment Trust will determine its future strategy and management structure by September, following the passing of its founder and chairman Maurice Facey.

The result could see the emergence of a younger executive structure, according to newly appointed director Paul Hanworth who now holds two executive positions.

"It is now time for us to go back and look at the strategy of the company and decide what will be the appropriate structure going forward," said Hanworth in an interview with Wednesday Business.

His job as chief financial officer was expanded to incorporate the newly created post of chief operating officer. And he also joined the Pan-Jam board on April 10. Stephen Facey was also named chairman and he also retains his position as chief executive officer.

Maurice Facey, who transitioned on April 2, founded the company in the 1960s after selling his father's company. Facey then embarked on building landmark commercial high-rise towers and expansive shopping centres in Kingston.

DIVERSITY

In recent years the company has diversified its revenue streams into insurance, tourism and manufacturing. And last year, the company merged its property subsidiary First Jamaica into the group.

"The person who founded this company is no longer with us ... and we need to make sure that we can put the company in a position that it can survive for the next 10, 20 or 30 years," said Hanworth.

Essentially, two of the three core executives ? Hanworth and Stephen Facey ? are some five years from retirement age. The third, Paul Facey, the vice-president of investments, is in his mid-forties, said Hansworth. As such, the strategic planning could entail succession planning.

While Pan-jam evaluates its strategy for the future, the company will determine "whether to hire someone internally or from outside; and whether Stephen and I will plan to retire," Hanworth said.

Asked whether the dual roles that both he and Stephen Facey now hold would be split once the future direction is determined, he said: "That question is better answered when we do our strategy planning".

"For Stephen's positions maybe it would be split one day, but that is based on what comes out of the strategy redesign," he told Wednesday Business. "But I think my position will be split".

Stephen Facey was off the island and not immediately available for comment.

Hanworth indicated that the creation of his COO position reflected the formalisation of the job he has done for the conglomerate over the years, particularly with the new and increased investments in associate companies, including insurer Sagicor Life Jamaica, sauce-maker Walkerswood, Mavis Bank Coffee Factory and Chukka Caribbean Adventures.

J$21B IN ASSEts

"We are a fairly developed organisation and our revenue streams come from diverse sources. It's good from a governance perspective that you separate those functions," he said of his dual roles.

Pan-Jam's management structure currently comprises five members: chairman/CEO Stephen Facey, VP Paul Facey, CFO/COO Hanworth; director, accounting services Camelia Nelson; and group treasury manager Claudette Ashman-Ivey, according to the website which was updated to notify of the passing of the elder Facey, and new announced positions.

Pan-Jam is the 11th richest Jamaican stock market company by assets totalling J$21 billion, according to Wednesday Business estimates. The conglomerate made more than J$2 billion profit last year due to the performance of its associated businesses led by Sagicor Life Jamaica and Chukka Adventures.

The company's next big project is a Courtyard/Marriott hotel to be constructed in New Kingston this year.

Kansas Star Casino tops $180 million in gambling revenue for 2012 ...

The Kansas Star Casino has had to kick in an extra 2 percent in state taxes after exceeding $180 million in gambling revenue during its fiscal year of Jan. 1, 2012, to Dec. 31, 2012.

By topping that benchmark, the Mulvane casino is required by its contract to pay the state 24 percent of its gambling revenue instead of the 22 percent mandated by law. The 2 percent bump means the casino has paid $63,998 in additional taxes to the state since December 2012.

The contract requires another 2 percent increase, up to 26 percent, if revenues exceed $220 million in a fiscal year.

The Kansas Star has earned $241.6 million since opening in December 2011. It continued a strong 2013 by taking in $19 million in March, according to the Kansas Lottery. It earned $17 million in February and $16.4 million in January.

Boyd Gaming, which manages the casino, cited it on Wednesday as a factor for a rise in Boyd?s net revenues during the first quarter. The Las Vegas-based company reported revenues of $737 million for the quarter, up from $633.1 million in the same quarter last year, a 16.4 percent increase. The company?s stock rose more than 22 percent in trading Wednesday.

During a conference call with investors, Paul Chakmak, Boyd?s chief operating officer, said the Kansas Star generated ?solid revenue growth? since it opened its permanent casino in December with new food and beverage amenities.

He also said that while its operating margins remain the highest in the company, ?they were impacted in the first quarter by higher expenses associated with these new amenities, as well as increased marketing expense. Marketing spend was unusually low during Kansas Star?s introductory period in early 2012, and this quarter?s results reflect more realistic customer reinvestment levels.?

Chakmak said the Kansas Star remains on track to generate about $100 million annually in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.

He also said visitation should grow when the casino opens its arena in late June with seating for more than 6,000 people. An arena of that size ?can generate significant customer traffic,? he said, citing as an example the Orleans Hotel and Casino ? Boyd?s largest casino in Las Vegas ? which has an arena with seating for up to 9,500 people.

Egypt pushes ahead with controversial law

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist-led parliament on Wednesday pushed ahead with a controversial judicial law in a heated session, despite a rising uproar among judges and the opposition who fear Islamists' control over courts.

The judiciary, with mostly secular-minded professional judges, is seen by many Egyptians as the one of the only remaining buffers against Islamists' monopoly of power following the ouster of authoritarian ruler Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Since then, Islamist parties have swept most polls and dominated legislative councils and the presidency.

The opposition vowed to escalate a campaign against the bill and judges called an emergency meeting. Activists who helped topple Mubarak have demanded that President Mohammed Morsi reform the judiciary and support its independence.

Presidential spokesman Ihab Fahmy told reporters on Wednesday that the Islamist president respects the judges and has assured them that he won't accept an assault on the judiciary.

"The president is keen on containing the judiciary crisis," he said. He added: "The president firmly stressed that it's unacceptable to hurt or encroach on the judiciary."

The crisis over the judiciary is a reflection of the deep-polarization that split the country into proponents and opponents of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood party backers. Dispute over the controversial law is the latest in a power tussle between Morsi and the judiciary since his June election.

Last year, courts disbanded the parliament, dominated by Islamists, over unconstitutionality of the election law. Last month, the courts challenged a new law governing parliamentary elections that were slated to begin this month, delaying the vote indefinitely. The president's Muslim Brotherhood party was pushing for early elections.

Morsi alleges that some in the judiciary are plotting conspiracies against his administration. His party says some judges want to bring back Mubarak's regime.

At the same time as Fahmy's remarks, the legislative committee of the upper house of parliament, which is seated as a transitional legislature, voted in favor of three draft laws on the judiciary proposed by Islamist groups. It opened the floor for further debate.

One proposed by Morsi's Freedom and Justice party, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood group, drops the retirement age for judges from 70 to 60, which would affect nearly a quarter of Egypt's 13,000 judges and prosecution officials. The draft also would bar the courts from reviewing or overturning presidential decrees issued by Morsi late last year, including his unilateral appointment of a new top prosecutor.

The same proposal mandates that judges oversee polling stations and punish those who refuse to carry out their duties ? a job that used to be voluntary. Last year, during the vote over a controversial draft of the country's new constitution that was written by Morsi's allies many judges boycotted the vote to protest a decree that temporarily granted Morsi's decisions immunity from judicial review.

During the parliamentary session, independent lawmaker Tharwat Nafaa ripped up a letter sent by the Judges' Union. The letter demanded the parliament stop debating the law because it said the constitutionality of the body was in dispute. Upset by the union's challenge, Nafaa, in front of cameras, screamed: "This is humiliation!"

At the Judges' Union headquarters where thousands of judges gathered to discuss their next move if the parliament passes the bill, Ahmed el-Zind, the head of the union, questioned Nafaa's political affiliation. "Are you really independent?" he shouted in his lengthy speech.

The crisis over the judiciary also has prompted the resignations of top Morsi's aides and advisers.

On Monday, the Morsi's top legal adviser Mohammed Fouad Gadallah resigned. In his three-page resignation letter, he said he wanted to shed light "on the extent of the danger facing the country" at a time when "personal interests are overwhelming national interests."

Two days earlier, Justice Minister Ahmed Mekki submitted his resignation, complaining that Morsi's supporters were "trampling" on the judiciary. He too criticized the president's handling of the dispute with the judiciary. He was a longtime pro-reform judge under Mubarak before becoming a minister in Morsi's government.

Fahmy, the presidential spokesman, told reporters that Morsi accepted Gadallah's resignation. He stopped short of commenting on the reasons stated for the resignation, saying only "this is a personal point of view that we don't comment on." He said Morsi will form a new panel of legal advisers.

5 shot to death in Illinois home, suspect killed

MANCHESTER, Ill. (AP) ? Authorities in central Illinois have yet to identify the five people who are believed to have been shot to death in their home by a man who was later gunned down by police.

The nephew of Manchester's mayor shot to death two women, two boys and a man before leading police on a chase that ended in an exchange of gunfire that left him dead, authorities said Wednesday.

Illinois State Police said they believe Rick O. Smith, 43, entered the home through the back door and shot the victims at close range with a shotgun. Two people were found in a bedroom, two in a second bedroom and the man in the hallway. A sixth victim, a 6-year-old girl, was injured and taken to a Springfield hospital.

"The offender took the 6-year-old out of the residence and put her in the hands of a neighbor," State Police Lt. Col. Todd Kilby said.

Officials have not revealed a motive for the killings. Police said the victims are related. The Scott County coroner's office says the identities of the victims will be released after autopsies are performed early Thursday.

Authorities believe Smith and the victims were acquainted, but they didn't provide details of the relationships.

A bystander called police and told them that Smith fled the home in a white sedan. A car chase ensued, leading authorities to the nearby town of Winchester, where Smith and officers exchanged gunfire. Officers shot Smith, and he later died at a hospital.

Police said they found a rifle, shotgun and large hunting knife in Smith's car.

Scott County State's Attorney Michael Hill said Smith, of rural Morgan County, had previous convictions for reckless homicide, drugs and bad checks.

Manchester Mayor Ronald Drake confirmed that Smith was his nephew, saying he hadn't spoken to Smith in two years but that he believed his nephew was unemployed. Drake said the last time Smith contacted him was to borrow tools.

In Manchester, yellow police tape surrounded the small one-story brick home where the victims were found. Manchester is a village of about 300 residents located about 50 miles west of Springfield.

"It's a close-knit community," Drake said. "Everybody talks to everybody. ... We enjoy everything that goes on (in) town. This is just a tragedy for (the) whole town."

The last homicide in Scott County was 20 years ago, in 1993.

Manchester resident Julie Hardwick, 48, said she lives in the same county housing authority complex as the victims. She said authorities told her she couldn't return to her home yet because of the investigation.

"The kids were really nice," Hardwick said of the family. "You couldn't ask for better kids."

The Rev. Robin Lyons of Manchester United Methodist Church, one of two churches in the community said, "this shows tragedy can happen anywhere."

Two area school superintendents said they received calls from county sheriffs before 6 a.m. informing them that five people had been shot to death at a house in Manchester and that a suspect was at large.

Superintendent David Roberts of the Winchester School District and Les Stevens of the North Greene Unit District No. 3 both said they immediately canceled classes when they were told of the shootings and that other school districts did the same.

Roberts said the wounded girl is a student at Winchester Grade School and her teacher was with her at the Springfield hospital.

The school will use its own counselor, nurse and other staff members to help students who need to talk, Roberts said. Other area districts have offered to help too.

Roberts said he also will call on area ministers to be available on campus. "I've found that to be helpful in the past," he said.

6 NY politicians plead not guilty to corruption

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) ? Amid a growing perception that corruption is a serious problem in New York, six politicians pleaded not guilty Tuesday in a federal case that alleges an audacious plot to buy a line on New York City's mayoral ballot.

Even one of the suspects said it, according to the indictment: When it comes to politicians taking money, "They're all like that."

None of the defendants, including state Sen. Malcolm Smith, spoke at Tuesday's arraignment; their not guilty pleas were entered by their lawyers. Smith is accused of scheming with New York City Councilman Daniel Halloran, a Republican, to bribe county Republican leaders for the GOP line on this year's mayoral ballot.

Because he is a Democrat, Smith would have needed three leaders' permission.

The indictment said two Republican Party leaders, Joseph Savino, of the Bronx, and Vincent Tabone, of Queens, accepted tens of thousands of dollars in exchange for their agreement.

Halloran is also accused of agreeing to steer City Council funds to a company in exchange for more bribes.

The indictment quotes him as saying, "That's politics; it's all about how much. Not about whether or will, it's about how much, and that's our politicians in New York, they're all like that."

In a separate bribery scheme, Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret are accused of taking money and property to approve a real estate project.

All six defendants remain free on bail.

The bribery and extortion charges produced hand-wringing in the city and in Albany, where Smith was removed from his most influential post.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced several anti-corruption proposals and U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who announced the charges three weeks ago, said Monday that he has met with the FBI "to discuss expanding our corruption efforts."

"It seems that a culture of corruption has developed and grown, just like barnacles on a boat bottom," Bharara said. "And just as with barnacles on a boat bottom, when a growth is permitted to spread and grow unchecked, it unsurprisingly takes an unrelenting, collective effort to clean up."

A Quinnipiac University poll released last week found that 48 percent of New Yorkers see corruption as "very serious," the highest share since the poll began asking the question in 2003. And a Siena College poll released Monday showed 81 percent of New York voters expect more corruption arrests.

The complaint and indictment make clear that much of the evidence will come from recordings made by an undercover FBI agent and a cooperating witness.

Neither is identified by name in the indictment, but the witness has been widely reported to be Moses Stern, a Rockland County real estate developer. Prosecutors acknowledge that the witness pleaded guilty to unspecified federal charges last month, hoping to win leniency at sentencing.

Desmaret's attorney, Kenneth Gribetz, said Monday he is eager to see the details of that plea bargain.

More rain expected for already swollen Midwest rivers

CLARKSVILLE, Mo. (AP) ? Communities along the Mississippi River and other Midwestern waterways are vigilantly eyeing ? and in some cases hastily fortifying ? makeshift levees to hold back floodwaters that meteorologists say could worsen or be prolonged by looming storms.

An inch of rain was expected to fall from Oklahoma to Michigan through Tuesday, a new drenching that led the National Weather Service to heighten the forecast crest of some stretches of rivers while blunting the progress of other waterways' slow retreat.

Mark Fuchs, a National Weather Service hydrologist, said the latest dousing could be especially troubling for communities along the Illinois River, which he said is headed for record crests.

"Along the Illinois, any increase is going to be cause for alarm, adding to their uncertainty and, in some cases, misery," he said late Monday afternoon.

Last week's downpours brought on sudden flooding throughout the Midwest, and high water is blamed for at least three deaths. Authorities in LaSalle, Ill., spent Monday searching for a woman whose van was spotted days earlier near a bridge, and a 12-year-old boy was in critical condition after being pulled from a river near Leadwood, Mo., about 65 miles south of St. Louis.

The additional rain isn't welcome news in Clarksville, Mo., about 70 miles north of St. Louis.

Days after bused-in prison inmates worked shoulder to shoulder with the National Guard and local volunteers to build a makeshift floodwall of sand and gravel, the barrier showed signs of strain Monday. Crews scrambled to patch trouble spots and build a second sandbag wall to catch any water weaseling through.

In Grafton, Ill., some 40 miles northeast of St. Louis, Mayor Tom Thompson said small community was holding its own against the Mississippi that by early Monday afternoon was 10 feet above flood stage. Waters lapped against some downtown buildings, forcing shops such as Hawg Pit BBQ to clear out and detours to be put up around town ? one key intersection was under 8 inches of water.

"If it gets another foot (higher), it's going to become another issue," Thompson said. Many businesses "are kinda watching and holding their breath. ... Some things are going to really be close to the wire."

Elsewhere, smaller rivers caused big problems. In Grand Rapids, Mich., the Grand River hit a record 21.85 feet, driving hundreds of people from their homes and flooding parts of downtown.

Spots south of St. Louis aren't expected to crest until late this week, and significant flooding is possible in places like Ste. Genevieve, Mo., Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Cairo, Ill. Further downriver, flood warnings have been issued for Kentucky and Tennessee.

Playing With My Food!: HealthFare Restaurant Review

Print Friendly and PDF
Last week I was invited in as a 'food blogger' to do a tour and menu tasting of a new local healthy fast food restaurant, HealthFare. I arrived not knowing what to expect...would they be nice? ?What if they noticed that I didn't have a fancy food blogger camera, business cards for my blog, and an extensive knowledge of...well, food? ?What if I didn't like the food or the restaurant - would I have to fake it? ?Would they be able to tell right away that I've never done this type of thing before? I needn't have worried, because the mother-son owner team of Jenni and Shaun Saini were completely welcoming, the restaurant was beautiful,?my point and shoot camera did the trick,?and most importantly...the food was fan-freaking-tastic!

It's guilt-free eating at its best, and here's why...

HealthFare offers you four things that your regular fast food restaurant never tends to:

1) It's Healthy! ?

Yes, I know, that was kind of an obvious one since the word Health is actually in the name of the restaurant, and the slogan is 'making healthy delicious.' ?But it is?rare to find an entirely healthy menu at a fast food restaurant, so I found this feature to be incredibly impressive. ?Everything is pre-portioned out so that there is precisely (and I do mean precisely) the exact same amount of ingredients going into each and every menu item each and every time. ?The reason that they are so strict on this is because the menu is created by a team of Registered Dieticians, and they never want to stray from having all of the nutritional facts be completely and 100% accurate with every serving. ?The calories are listed right on the menu, and all of the additional nutritional information is readily available.

You know a place is healthy when they don't even offer any Pepsi or Coke products in-store. ?There is actually no pop available at all, and instead they stock beverages like BLK fulvic-enhanced mineral water, coconut water, and Steaz iced tea. ?There's no super-sizing at a place like this, unless you count this gigantic lemon water pitcher. ?

Ok, and guys? ?They have these green smoothies there that have spinach in them, and I drank one, and and I liked it. ?I'm a total first-timer in the green smoothie department, and like seriously, I don't understand how that can even be good, but it was better than good. ?It was delicious in fact, all blended up with tropical fruit other awesome healthy things. I seriously think I drank it in like 28 seconds and didn't pay attention to anything or anyone else while it was happening, because that green smoothie became my world for half a minute. ?Somehow I know that if I tried to make this at home it would be completely awful, but HealthFare made a green smoothie into something that I have been craving since my visit.

2) It's Fresh!

I was taken on a little tour of the restaurant and got to see the back of the house. ?While I was there, one of the cooks was slicing up fresh boneless, skinless chicken breast for later use in a rice bowl.

When was the last time that a fast food restaurant chain used fresh chicken breast in their menu? ?Probably never. ?But this place does. ?In fact, nothing is brought in pre-made. ?Everything, right down to their delicious sauces and salad dressings, is made in-house so that it's as fresh as can be and without any unnecessary preservatives, additional sodium, or other nasty chemicals.
All of the baked goods are made fresh daily too. ?All meals are made to order while you are there, with the average wait time at under five minutes from the time you order to the time that you're chowing down. ?It gives the term 'eat fresh' a whole new fast food meaning.

3) It's Earth-Conscious!

HealthFare is?a bright, beautiful, inviting, 'eco-chic' restaurant. ?Even the furniture is designed with sustainability and environmental responsibility top of mind. ?The chairs are made from BMW-designed recycled materials, the flooring is made from natural and renewable supplies, and the ceiling is made from recycled Japanese kirei board.

They use biodegradable to-go containers rather than styrofoam so that your take-out packaging doesn't end up in a landfill.
They even pour?Kicking Horse Coffee?(reason alone for a few people that I know to become regular patrons), who just like HealthFare are also focussed on environmental sustainability and community.

4) It's suitable for vegans, vegetarians,?glutards...and kids! ?

I have to tell you that since going gluten-free in July 2012, I haven't been eating much fast food. ?It's not that I was ever really one to frequent McDonalds or Taco Bell, but it was nice to have options if I ever was on the road and needed something quickly. ?But since the big diet change in July, I haven't been able to find a fast food restaurant that I can go to with confidence and know that what I am eating is gluten free. ?With HealthFare, a lot of the menu is gluten free, without the requirement for me to have to make modifications to my order. ?They have symbols beside each menu item to indicate if it is vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free, so that you're able to easily identify what items are appropriate for whatever special dietary requirements that you may have. ?I actually had options to choose from on the menu at HealthFare, which is unusual for someone on a gluten free diet. ?It was kind of like a gluten free Disneyland, especially because as I mentioned I got to do a menu tasting, and boy did I ever tuck it back. ?But everything was better than the thing I had just tried, and I just had to keep eating and eating. ?From the savoury rice bowls, to the wholesome salads, to the artisan sandwiches, to the healthy soups, and finally to the frozen yogurt, this place has something for everyone.

My personal favourite is something called The Bakker Bowl, named after HealthFare's creator, Mark Bakker. ?The Bakker is sort of a cross between a rice bowl and a salad, served cold and overflowing with roasted marinated chicken breast, whole-grain brown rice, cherry tomatoes, feta, and ranch dressing.
They even offer a kids menu, with healthy choices under 500 calories like Multigrain Grilled Cheese or Polka Dot Pizza.

I was turned on to something new while I was there, which is the Vega line of vegan protein products. ?Healthfare offers this brand at the suggested market price, rather than marking it up in a crazy way like some retailers do.

HealthFare is totally responsive to the changing needs of their customers as well as new trends. ?For instance, they noticed that customers were coming in and requesting almond milk, but it wasn't something they carried. ?The next week they started stocking it in their fridge. ?They were also noticing that people who eat tofu prefer for it to be certified organic tofu, which the brand that they were carrying was not. ?Shortly thereafter, they made the switch to an organic tofu to please their customers. ?This is a restaurant that is not afraid to try new things and to break the mould to please the ever-changing needs of their more health-conscious customers.

The restaurant concept began in Alberta, where there are currently two locations. ?The new B.C. location that I visited is at 7366 Market Crossing, in Burnaby, which is in the new-ish Market Crossing shopping centre at Byrne Road and Marine Way. ?From the Healthfare Facebook page I've learned that ?there are currently franchise opportunities in Port Coquitlam, downtown Vancouver, and Surrey. ?There are also new stores popping up soon in the lower mainland, with locations being announced imminently.

Hopefully restaurants like Healthfare are the way of the future, as they bridge between food being convenient and quick, while still allowing you to make healthy lifestyle choices. ?I wish them all of the success in their quest to serve healthy, delicious food fast and in a sustainable way, and look forward to seeing more Healthfare locations sprout up in the lower mainland soon.

One word of warning...do not start yourself on eating the house-made seasoned almonds that they sell by the small container-ful, unless you never ever want to stop thinking about them again. ?They are highly addictive in the way that salty-sweet things always are to me. ?I now think about them often and with much fondness.
