Research helps to show how turbulence can occur without inertia

Anyone who has flown in an airplane knows about turbulence, or when the flow of a fluid ? in this case, the flow of air over the wings ? becomes chaotic and unstable. For more than a century, the field of fluid mechanics has posited that turbulence scales with inertia, and so massive things, like planes, have an easier time causing it.

Now, research led by engineers at the University of Pennsylvania has shown that this transition to turbulence can occur without inertia at all.

The study was conducted by associate professor Paulo E. Arratia and graduate student Lichao Pan, both of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics of Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science. They collaborated with professor Christian Wagner of Germany's Saarland University and with professor Alexander Morozov of Scotland's University of Edinburgh.

It was published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

One of the most fundamental concepts in fluid dynamics is the Reynolds number. Named for Osborne Reynolds, the late 19th century physicist who demonstrated how fluid flowing through a pipe transitioned into a turbulent state. Reynolds numbers describe the ratio between viscous forces and inertial forces for given fluids and the conditions they are flowing in. Low Reynolds numbers are associated with "laminar" flow, which is smooth and orderly, while high Reynolds numbers are associated with turbulent flow, which is nonlinear and chaotic.

In laminar, or linear, flow, there is a direct relationship between the force applied to the fluid and how fast it moves. When the applied force is removed, viscous forces stop the fluid's motion. With turbulent, or nonlinear, flows, this relationship is no longer straight forward. This is because inertial forces keep the fluid moving even after the applied force is removed. Briefly stirring a cup of coffee with a spoon will keep the coffee swirling for minutes, but the same effect can't be achieved with a cup of honey.

"What Reynolds elegantly suggested was that the force that makes things go nonlinear or irregular is inertia, since inertia is a nonlinear force itself," Arratia said. "As water flows faster, it has more inertia and thus becomes more turbulent, which is something you can see as you turn the tap on the faucet in your sink."

The transition from smooth to turbulent has obvious implications for massive things, such as airplanes, but surprisingly, it also has an impact on small scales where mass should theoretically not play a factor. It is relevant to the flow of blood in capillaries, or in extracting oil or natural gas from porous rock, as is the case with fracking.

"In fracking, all of these liquids go through tiny pores. Originally, people thought that, since the pores were so small, there would be no inertia and therefore no turbulence, but it's there," Arratia said. "They get all of these fluctuations and unusual pressure drops, and a lot of things would fail because of it."

To explain how turbulence could arise even in the absence of inertia, Arratia's team set out to conduct an experiment similar to Reynolds' famous one, but instead of changing the inertia of the fluid, they changed the fluid itself. In their study, they pumped a polymer-infused fluid through a pipe at a constant rate. Polymers are a common feature of non-Newtonian fluids ? such as blood, ketchup or yogurt ? which have flow properties that change under certain conditions. One of the main features of non-Newtonian fluids is that their material properties, such as viscosity, are nonlinear ? there is not a direct relationship between the amount of force exerted on them and the speed at which they flow.

Another factor in the transition to turbulence is how the linear, smooth flow is initially disturbed so that a chaotic, non-linear flow begins. In Reynolds' experiment, the roughness of the walls of the pipe was sufficient to "kick" the flow into a turbulent state once a sufficient amount of inertia was present. In Arratia's experiment, this roughness was a precisely controlled via a series of cylindrical posts at the beginning of the pipe.

"After 'kicking' the pipe with these posts, we watch the fluid flow a certain distance. If that disturbance decays, the flow is laminar, but if the disturbance is maintained or grows, it's turbulent," Arratia said. "And we saw it grow."

Beyond medical or industrial applications, understanding the interplay between non-Newtonian fluids and turbulence is an important contribution to the fundamentals of fluid mechanics.

"We always thought that inertia had to be there for this transition to take place, but there are other non-linear forces out there," Arratia said. "In this case, even though we're at a low Reynolds number as there's no inertia coming from the mass, because the fluid is non-linear itself you get a very similar transition to the one Osborne Reynolds saw in 1883."

Health defects found in fish exposed to Deepwater Horizon oil spill, three years later

May 1, 2013 ? Crude oil toxicity continued to sicken a sentinel Gulf Coast fish species for at least more than a year after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, according to new findings from a research team that includes a University of California, Davis, scientist.

With researchers from Louisiana and South Carolina, the scientists found that Gulf killifish embryos exposed to sediments from oiled locations in 2010 and 2011 show developmental abnormalities, including heart defects, delayed hatching and reduced hatching success. The killifish is an environmental indicator species, or a "canary in the coal mine," used to predict broader exposures and health risks.

The findings, posted online in advance of publication in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, are part of an ongoing collaborative effort to track the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on Gulf killifish populations in areas of Louisiana that received heavy amounts of oil.

Other species that share similar habitats with the Gulf killifish, such as redfish, speckled trout, flounder, blue crabs, shrimp and oysters -- may be at risk of similar effects.

"These effects are characteristic of crude oil toxicity," said co-author Andrew Whitehead, an assistant professor of environmental toxicology at UC Davis. "It's important that we observe it in the context of the Deepwater Horizon spill because it tells us it is far too early to say the effects of the oil spill are known and inconsequential. By definition, effects on reproduction and development -- effects that could impact populations -- can take time to emerge."

Killifish are abundant in the coastal marsh habitats along the Gulf Coast. Though not fished commercially, they are an important forage fish and a key member of the ecological community. Because they are nonmigratory, measurements of their health are indicative of their local environment, making them an ideal subject for study.

The researchers collected Gulf killifish from an oiled site at Isle Grande Terre, La., and monitored them for measures of exposure to crude oil. They also exposed killifish embryos in the lab to sediment collected from oiled sites at Isle Grande Terre within Barataria Bay in Louisiana.

"Our findings indicate that the developmental success of these fish in the field may be compromised," said lead author Benjamin Dubansky, who recently earned his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University.

Whitehead said the report's findings may predict longer-term impacts to killifish populations. However, oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill showed up in patches, rather than coating the coastline. That means some killifish could have been hit hard by the spill while others were less impacted.

Whitehead said it is possible that some of the healthier, less impacted killifish could buffer the effects of the spill for the population as a whole.

The research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative and the National Institutes of Health.

The other researchers in the study are Fernando Galvez, associate professor of biological sciences at Louisiana State University; and Charles D. Rice, professor of biological sciences at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. The researchers have tracked the impact of the oil on killifish since the Deepwater Horizon spill occurred in April 2010.

Demographics

Between the 21st and 24th of February 2013 500 people who had used coupons were selected to complete the survey. Furthermore, 250 of these people selected were feature phone users, and the other 250 smartphone users. All were aged 20 or older, but no further demographics were provided.

I relatively rarely use coupons. I have a small repertoire of restaurants I like to visit, so I already know which allow coupons. Specifically, Satoyama Dining gives me a 10% off coupon if I complete the questionnaire after eating, and Kamakura Pasta (branches everywhere) who occasionally send me three 10% off coupons, each with slight variations on my name spelling!

New Italian premier urges EU to focus on growth

BERLIN (AP) ? Italy's new prime minister called Tuesday for European countries to prioritize economic growth over debt reduction, adding his government believes Europe needs to integrate further to overcome its current crisis.

Enrico Letta chose Germany for his first official trip abroad ? arriving there only hours after winning the final vote of approval by the Senate in Rome ? to persuade European leaders to ease the pressure on his country to pursue painful austerity measures.

"We have done everything that was necessary to keep our finances in order and we will do everything," Letta said at a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "But Europe must implement policies promoting growth," he said.

Merkel has been among the strongest advocates of structural reforms, spending cuts and deficit reduction across Europe. She acknowledged that Italy has "already made substantial progress" but stressed that improving public finances and fostering economic growth must go together.

"For us in Germany, budget consolidation and growth are two elements that are not in opposition to each other but that have to develop together to foster more competitiveness and the creation of more jobs," she said. She added growth can't be fostered by governments alone but has to rely on private sector investment.

Italy, the third-largest economy in the 17-nation eurozone, has suffered years of anemic growth and is currently in recession. The unemployment rate is 11.5 percent and almost 40 percent of those younger than 25 have no job, according to EU statistics. Italy's debt burden has grown to over 120 percent of the country's annual economic output ? trailing only Greece's debt level.

Some analysts say Italy's future is the linchpin in the eurozone's hopes to survive the debt crisis. The country's economy and its debts are so large that the rest of the currency bloc could not afford to support it with bailout loans.

While Letta reiterated that his government will respect Italy's commitments to bring its public finances in order, he hinted that Europe spends too much energy obsessing over deficits and does too little to foster growth.

"We don't want a Europe that allows everyone to run the deficits that he wants. We want a Europe that uses the determination with which it has built the rules to avoid (overly high) deficits to implement policies fostering growth," he said.

Once an economy is in recession, its debt load ? measured relative to its annual economic output ? worsens. EU policies then require member nations with already excessive debt levels to make further budget cuts, which can in turn deepen the recession.

Italy has little financial leeway as it has promised to meet EU deficit limits and is also under pressure from financial markets, where investors are worried about the country's capacity to repay its 2 trillion euro ($2.6 trillion) debt pile.

Letta's coalition has announced a costly suspension of an unpopular tax on primary residences. It also pledged not to raise the sales tax and to reduce some payroll taxes, but has yet to explain how to handle the resulting shortfalls.

The European Commission, the 27-nation bloc's executive arm, was quick on Tuesday to say the agreed debt and deficit targets for this year remain unchanged.

EU leaders have hinted, however, that they are considering granting economically struggling countries like Italy or Spain more time to meet their deficit targets in the coming years provided they press ahead with structural reforms.

Letta said his government will push for further European integration, including closer coordination of economic policies, the introduction of a full banking union and a genuine political union.

"There is still no solution for the crisis because there isn't enough Europe," he insisted.

Germany, Europe's biggest economy, has at times been holding back on European integration for fear its taxpayers' money might ultimately be needed to prop up the bloc's weaker nations.

After their news conference, Letta and Merkel were having dinner at the chancellery behind closed doors.

Berlin was a delicate first stop on Letta's quick dash across Europe since Italian newspapers and politicians ? including some now backing the coalition government ? have accused outgoing Premier Mario Monti's government of being a mere stooge to Merkel.

Letta, 46, will also take his message to Paris, where he meets Wednesday with President Francois Hollande, and then to Brussels.

The center-left premier leads a still to be tested grand coalition that includes former premier Silvio Berlusconi's conservatives.

"Italy still faces a significant risk from the potential fragility of the new coalition government and its temporary stability being endangered by conflict between its various factions," said IHS Insight analyst Raj Badiani.

Already, one key proposal ? to put on hold a tax on primary residences ? was being picked apart by some of Letta's key partners.

Berlusconi said he will support the government only if the tax is repealed outright. But Italy's three main unions balked at an across-the-board abolishment of the tax, saying the money is needed for welfare programs. They argue it should be abolished only for Italians with one residence.

The tax on first homes generates 4 billion euros ($5.2 billion) a year, and the decision to suspend June payments will cost the state 2 billion euros at a time when the government urgently needs to find money to pay for a fund for workers on temporary layoffs.

Antimatter might fall up, say physicists

A paper published this week suggests that antimatter could exhibit antigravity, potentially resolving some of physics' biggest mysteries.

That's what particle physicists are asking after they reported their first direct measurements, published in the current issue of Nature Communications,?of gravity's effects on the antimatter equivalent of hydrogen.?

The measurements were taken at CERN, the huge particle physics laboratory on the French-Swiss border. CERN's ?Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus,?or?ALPHA, captures positrons and antiprotons, which are just like regular electrons and protons except that they have opposite charges and quantum "spins," in a vacuum chamber where they combine to form antihydrogen.?

When antimatter comes into contact with ordinary matter, the two obliterate each other in a flash of radiation and other subatomic smithereens (which is why we should all be grateful that Isaac Newton was never struck on the head by an antiapple). So, to get a good look at the antihydrogen before it vanishes, the ALPHA scientists trap it in a magnetic "bottle" that takes advantage of the antiatoms' magnetic properties to hold them in place.

The ALPHA team has actually gotten pretty good at confining antihydrogen: In 2011, they set a record by trapping the atoms for more than 16 minutes, an eternity for particle physics.

Now they're asking what happens after the magnets are turned off and the antihydrogen is released. Does it fall down or up?

Sadly, the measurements were inconclusive. The antihydrogen atoms have proven too squirrely and the ALPHA equipment too imprecise to give a definitive answer.

?This is the first word, not the last,? said Joel Fajans, a?University of California at Berkeley physicist and ALPHA team member, in a UC Berkeley press release. ?We?ve taken the first steps toward a direct experimental test of questions physicists and nonphysicists have been wondering about for more than 50 years. We certainly expect antimatter to fall down, but just maybe we will be surprised.?

If antimatter were to fall up, it could help explain one physics' greatest mysteries, namely, why the universe seems to contain so much matter ? such as stars, planets, belly-button lint and so on ? and so little antimatter, which, as far as we know, exists only as products of?radioactive?decay, exploding stars, and very strong electric fields.?

According to the standard model of particle physics, the universe should have the same amount of matter and antimatter. "Have had" actually, because, if at the time of the Big Bang there were equal amounts of matter and antimatter, the two would have annihilated each other in short order, leaving only photons.

Because we're here, physicists suspect that this didn't happen. But nobody really knows why.

If antimatter falls up though, then the prevalence of matter over antimatter might make sense. As CERN physicist?Dragan Slavkov Hajdukovic argued in a 2011 paper, a cosmos in which matter and antimatter repel each other would experience a series of expansions and contractions ? Big Bangs and Big Crunches, if you will ? with each successive universe cycling between being dominated by matter and antimatter. Under this model, our present-day universe is mostly matter because the previous one was mostly antimatter. (Residents of that universe probably just called it matter.)?

Elsewhere?Hajdukovic argued that gravitantionally repulsive antimatter?does away with the need to posit the existence of dark matter, thus resolving one of physics' other big mysteries.?

So when will we find out if antimatter falls up? ALPHA is currently being upgraded and will reopen in 2014, and physicists hope to find out after that.?

If antimatter is indeed antigravity, we would need to revise quite a bit of current physics. But then again, current physics can't explain where half of our universe went, so perhaps a revision is just what we need. ?

A new virus that causes severe breathing distress and kidney failure elicits a distinctive airway cell response to allow it to multiply. Scientists studying the Human Coronavirus-Erasmus Medical Center, which first appeared April 2012 in the Middle East, have discovered helpful details about its stronghold tactics.

Their findings predict that certain currently available compounds might treat the infection. These could act, not by killing the virus directly, but by keeping lung cells from being forced to create a hospitable environment for the virus to reproduce.

The researchers caution that their lab and computer predictions would need to be tested to see if the drugs work clinically.

The results appear in the April 30 issue of mBio, the Journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

University of Washington virologist Laurence Josset is lead author of the paper, "Cell host-response to infection with novel human coronavirus-EMC predicts potential antivirals and important differences with SARS-coronavirus."

She conducted the research in the laboratory of senior author Michael G. Katze, UW professor of microbiology noted for pioneering systems biology approaches to host and pathogen interactions.

Eleven of the 17 reported human coronavirus EMC cases worldwide were fatal. The virus is named for the Dutch hospital that identified the specimen from a Saudi Arabia patient. So far the illness has not easily passed person to person.

The new disease agent belongs to the betacoronavirus family, as does the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus, SARS. Both viruses attack the lungs. The new virus, however, is more closely related to bat coronaviruses than to SARS. The two viruses latch onto different receptors to infect cells.

Josset, Katze and their team learned that, shortly after human coronavirus-EMC enters lung cells, it, like the SARS virus, induces changes in how the cells' genes are regulated. But the newer virus does so sooner.

Later, and throughout infection, the human coronavirus EMC incites a massive sabotage ? much greater than that of the SARS virus ? of many genetic controls of protein production in lung cells grown in the laboratory.

"We found that a set of 207 genes in the lung cells was dysregulated early and permanently throughout infection with human coronavirus EMC," Josset said. Various RNA levels were turned up or down.

The new virus appears to specifically hamper the work of several genes that enable the body to sense the presence of viruses. The scientists believe such gene re-tuning by the virus could significantly lower the ability of lung cells to mount an appropriate antiviral reaction.

While SARS and EMC activated a few similar lung cell responses for their own benefit, overall, not much overlap occurred. Each bad actor had its own modus operandi for interfering with lung cell gene activities.

"These differences in host gene-expression responses in the lab-grown lung cells," the researchers said, "might affect how each virus causes illness in an infected individual."

At present no proven treatment exists for human coronavirus EMC. Because the virus succeeds in multiplying by hijacking cellular processes initiated in response to infection, the scientists searched for drugs that might target these cellular responses, and in so doing stop the virus from reproducing.

The researchers mentioned that this same approach is already being tested in influenza treatment. Drugs that reduce the body's excessive inflammatory reaction to the flu virus have therapeutic benefit.

The scientists obtained a rapid, comprehensive assessment of the new coronavirus's infective strategies by creating a global profile of how it disrupts gene transcription, the process by which DNA is copied into RNA for subsequent translation into proteins.

They analyzed this extensive data with computer programs that predict which current drugs might be re-purposed to correct the body's virus-co-opted immune response.

The method could have widespread applications in fighting future dangerous viruses.

"Such an approach has the advantage of accelerating treatment availability, which could be crucial in case of an outbreak of an emerging pathogen," Josset said.

Katze concurred, "Laurence and others in our group are developing new computational approaches to efficiently exploit information about the gene expression profiles induced by existing drugs and small molecules. Our goal is to quickly identify drugs that can modify specific host responses to virus infection."

In the case of human coronavirus EMC, the approach yielded two promising possibilities. The analysis suggested that the early and sustained changes in lung cell gene regulation could be reverted by four types of kinase inhibitor and one kind of glucocorticoid.

What this study highlights, Josset said, is the advantages of fast, automated analysis of the transcriptome (all the messenger RNAs transcribed from the genome) of the infected cells.

"This method globally and efficiently characterizes the host response to emerging pathogens," Josset said. Data on the basic properties of a new virus and its interactions with host cells can usually be collected speedily. It takes, on average, between two weeks to a month after the virus has been identified and isolated.

The gene expression data obtained from the analysis of human coronavirus EMC infection, she said, was so robust that it "provides a plethora of data to mine for further understanding and ideas to test about the new virus."

"Because," she added, "host response profiles also can be used to quickly identify possible treatment strategies, we anticipate that generating such profiles will become a general strategy for rapid characterization of future emerging viruses."

Katze noted, "The emergence of new viruses, such as the H7N9 influenza virus in China, will continue to be a threat to public health. Devising new strategies to rapidly identify effective antiviral drugs is a high priority."
