Massachusetts? Clean Energy Economy Grows 11.2%, Creates 71K+ Jobs

?
Government investment and support for clean, renewable energy development is paying off handsomely in Massachusetts, where the clean energy economy grew 11.2% between July 2011 and July 2012. The state?s fast-growing clean energy sector now employs 71,523 people at 4,995 clean energy businesses across the state, according to a Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) report released Aug. 16.

?I have said from the beginning of this Administration that, if we get clean energy right, the world will be our customer,? Governor Deval Patrick, who?s serving his second term in office, stated in a press release. ?This past year?s 11.2 percent increase in clean energy jobs means that we are getting it right and the world knows it.

?Investing in our nation-leading clean energy agenda is the right thing to do for our environment, our energy independence, our public health and our economic vitality. We owe it to our future to keep this momentum going strong.?

?

?

The 11.2% economic growth rate for Massachusetts? clean energy sector is well above that of even rapidly industrializing countries, such as China. The 71,523 people employed at clean energy businesses recorded by MassCEC in its latest annual report are working in jobs directly related to the state?s clean energy sector. Signs indicate the growth will continue.

?Employers surveyed are optimistic about the coming year and expect to hire more workers in 2013,? MassCEC states in its press release. ?Clean energy continues to maintain its place as one of the Commonwealth?s marquee industries, with 1.7 percent of the total Massachusetts workforce.?

MassCEC found that the state?s clean energy sector is a diversified one, with businesses involved in construction and manufacturing to research and development. In its ?2012 Massachusetts Clean Energy Industry Report,? MassCEC also ?identified a large number of companies that don?t necessarily identify themselves as clean energy companies first, but directly engage in activity related to the clean energy sector ? showing that clean energy penetrates numerous sectors of the Massachusetts economy.?

?This report is proof that Massachusetts? innovation economy is succeeding,? said incoming MassCEC Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Alicia Barton McDevitt, who begins her term on August 20.

?The report affirms Massachusetts? role as a national and global leader in clean energy development and deployment, and a success made possible by our talented workforce, world-class academic and research institutions, and Governor Patrick?s vision for a clean energy future in Massachusetts.?

For the report, a clean energy business ?is defined as an employer engaged in whole or in part in providing goods and services related to renewable energy, energy efficiency, alternative transportation, and carbon management. Clean energy workers are defined as spending at least a portion of their time supporting the clean energy aspects of their businesses.?

Prepared by BW Research Partnership on behalf of MassCEC, the Massachusetts ?2012 Clean Energy Industry Report? includes breakdowns of companies and employment by technology sector and geographic region, as well as information on workforce trends.

Carbon tax could help fund a better future - David Suzuki Foundation

VANCOUVER - When interim finance minister Shirley Bond moves into her office next week, she will find her desk piled with more than 1,500 letters from British Columbians encouraging her to recommit to climate leadership.

The letters, sent through the Better Future Fund website (betterfuturefund.ca), urge the provincial government to expand British Columbia's successful carbon tax to include currently exempted emissions and to use the revenue generated to fight climate change and fund community solutions that will help create a better future.

"Too often, we only hear from those who would like to see British Columbia take a big step back from our climate change commitments," said Merran Smith, director of Clean Energy Canada at Tides Canada. "This resounding show of support suggests that citizens believe we must continue to do our part to fight global warming?and that an effective and fair carbon tax is a powerful tool to help us do so."

The Better Future Fund is an innovative new online initiative launched by the David Suzuki Foundation, Clean Energy Canada at Tides Canada, the Pembina Institute, and the B.C. Sustainable Energy Association. It invites B.C. residents to share their ideas on how the proceeds from an expanded carbon tax could help their communities fight global warming.

"Citizens clearly agree that an expanded carbon tax should fund solutions that reduce harmful greenhouse-gas emissions," said Matt Horne, director of the Pembina Institute's climate change program. "What's especially encouraging is that we've seen support come in from all parts of the province?from Vancouver to the Peace to the Kootenays."

The provincial government's carbon tax review is accepting submissions from citizens until the end of business day tomorrow, August 31, 2012.

Hands on with Moleskine for Android on the Samsung Galaxy Note 2

One o?f the announcements at the Samsung Unpacked event on Tuesday night in Berlin, was of an updated SDK for the Note devices with a view to better third party integration of the S-Pen. One of the apps that will be getting on board with the Galaxy Note 2 is Moleskine, you know, those nice -- and somewhat expensive -- paper notebooks that so many seem to adore.

Moleskine has recently announced an integration between their paper notebooks and Evernote with the 'Smart Notebook', but this is something entirely different. This is a native note taking application, that will be exclusively available on the Galaxy Note devices for six months after launch.

So it's a note taking app. Samsung includes a perfectly good note taking app themselves on the Galaxy Note devices already. While Moleskine here at IFA may only be a demo version, there's certainly a lot to like about it. It's really nicely done, and makes full use of the S-Pen and the pressure sensitive technology within the Note 2.

The main home screen displays all of your various journals on a book shelf, and the actual journals themselves can be customized with different colored paper, lines, grids, you get the picture. There will be a selection of pre-created templates, which in this demo version was for recording information about your dog. At launch there will be many more though.

As we already mentioned, this version is only a demo, and there will be more features available when it comes to launch such as the pocket that can be found on paper Moleskine notebooks. It's really well done though, and the future success of the Note line will depend on developers bringing quality apps to market that take advantage of the technology within the devices. The emphasis seems to be on creating the same experience of writing in a paper Moleskine notebook though, just in digital form.

Moleskine will be available through Samsung Apps at launch, but the developers did confirm to us that after the exclusivity period with Samsung has expired, Moleskine will be available through Google Play.

Exclusive: Pentagon threatens legal action over bin Laden book

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon warned on Thursday that it was considering legal action against a former U.S. Navy SEAL for material breach of non-disclosure agreements with his his first-hand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

In a letter obtained by Reuters, and subsequently released by the Pentagon, the Pentagon's top attorney also warned that it was also considering legal options against anyone "acting in concert" with the author.

The letter, addressed to "Mark Owen," the pseudonym under which the book was written, identified two separate non-disclosure agreements he signed with the Navy that legally committed him to never divulge classified information.

"You are in material breach and violation of the non-disclosure agreements you signed," the letter by Jeh Johnson, the Pentagon's General Counsel, said.

"The Department of Defense is considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation."

U.S. officials said last week they were surprised by the book, which was not vetted by government agencies to ensure that no secrets were revealed.

The book has received widespread media coverage and the Pentagon letter noted that some copies have already been released, even ahead of the book's formal release next week.

"Further public dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements," the letter warned.

Earlier this week, the author said in a statement from his publisher that the book was written "with respect for my fellow service members while adhering to my strict desire not to disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

But many in the special operations community have privately expressed disappointment in recent days over the book and the publicity it has received.

The author now faces threats against his life. An official al Qaeda website last week posted a photograph and the real name of the former Navy commando, calling him "the dog who murdered the martyr Sheikh Osama bin Laden."

Meet the Very First Rover To Land On Mars

Mars 3 was a probe, not a rover.

Soviets definitely got their probe on before the west, and probed repeatedly, both Mars and Venus.

The probes on Venus had really short lives, due to the inhospitable conditions.. lot of cash for a little bit of observations. (I think the longest living one made two hours? forget now).

Rudy Giuliani: Election between ?Mr. Cool? and ?Mr. Competent?

Rudy Giuliani (Torrey AndersonSchoepe/Yahoo News)

TAMPA-- Voters should consider "competence" over "cool" when deciding who to support for president in November, Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Wednesday.

Giuliani stopped by the media filing center near the Republican National Convention site, where he told reporters that voters "made a big mistake" by electing President Barack Obama in 2008.

"If I had to select somebody to straighten out my business, I wouldn't necessarily select the cool guy, I'd select the competent guy," Giuliani said in response to a question about Mitt Romney's personal appeal to voters. "And I think maybe we made a big mistake last time. We selected Mr. Cool and we've had the worst unemployment that we've had since the Great Depression. Maybe this time if we select Mr. Competent, we'll be a lot better off."

Another reporter asked Giuliani, who launched his own bid for the presidency in 2008, if he was concerned about the possible optics of holding a celebratory convention while a hurricane is hitting the Gulf Coast.

"I think they are showing sensitivity," he said. "If there was somebody who needed a triple bypass operation you wouldn't not do it because there's a hurricane going on someplace else. The fact is, this country needs reform, it needs change. This is the time that's been assigned for this convention. What is happening here is not interfering in any way in what's going on there."

Basic Info if You're Considering Bankruptcy | Personal Finance Blog

For some, bankruptcy is an easy way out. For others, it is the last resort they hoped never to come to. Because it is such a big deal in a person?s financial life, there have come to be a wide array of misunderstandings that go along with it. In recent years, several changes have taken place in how bankruptcy is filed, as well as how and what type of debts can be expunged using the bankruptcy process. One notable example is student loans. In order for student loans to be erased, you have to show that they present an ?undue hardship? under the law.

First off, bankruptcy doesn?t mean that you?re going to lose everything. This misconception may have more to do with ?Wheel of Fortune? or ?Monopoly,? but it isn?t reality. In most cases, bankruptcy liquidation means that extraneous things are sold off to pay your debts. Coin collections, art, antiques and furniture are typically attached, but not always, and then only under chapter 7 bankruptcy. Chapter 13 is another beast all together.

Chapter 7 bankruptcy is total liquidation of assets under court order with exclusions. These exclusions are like an allowance given to you by the court that you can use to ?purchase? some of your possessions back from the bankruptcy sale. These might include your vehicle, tools that you work with, and even musical instruments. How much you can retain during bankruptcy proceedings is different in every state and can be subject to the discretion of the bankruptcy court. For example, in some states, law allows you to retain up to $3,500 for a vehicle. That means that if your car books for $3,000, you can keep it. If it is worth $4,000, then the car will be sold, you will be given $3,500, and your creditors will be given $500 toward your debt.

In Chapter 13, you may not have to give up anything that you own free and clear. Of course, Chapter 13 bankruptcy differs from Chapter 7 in that you do have to pay back your debts, but the payments on those debts are structured in such a way that you can, based on your current income, pay them off. While 7 is basically for those who have no way of paying their debts whatsoever, 13 is a restructuring of those debts to make them more manageable.

Declaring bankruptcy is no small matter, and should never be entered into lightly. The existence of a bankruptcy of any type on your credit report will negatively impact your credit rating for at least 10 years, meaning that loans you apply for will charge you higher interest rates, and you may not qualify at all for some forms of credit. It can impact your ability to get a job or to find an apartment, much less purchase a home. While it may seem like an easy escape from under a mountain of debt, it is critical that every other option is exhausted first. If you feel as though you have no other option but to file for bankruptcy, choose a legal professional who has a strong reputation within your community.

Incorporating Your Child's Culture Into Holidays

After completing an international adoption, there are many easy ways you can incorporate your child?s culture into your family. Holidays and celebrations offer the perfect opportunity to do this in a natural, yet intentional way.

Fuse Cultures Together

Find ways to blend elements of your child?s native culture with your own family traditions. If you have a tradition of giving each child an ornament every year on Christmas, give ornaments to everyone from your child?s home country. If you go caroling, learn a Christmas song from your child?s first country to add it to your repertoire. Most importantly, show your child that you appreciate their cultural background and want to be a part of it.

Honor Birthday Traditions

A small bit of research will give you ideas on how birthdays are celebrated in your child?s birth country. You can then take this information and create the party using entirely those traditions or by sprinkling them here and there. If you have a child adopted from China, you may be interested in learning about how to celebrate a Chinese-style birthday.

Mark Your Calendars

Countries such as those observing the Orthodox calendar celebrate their holidays on different days than what is common in other parts of the world.? You may choose to celebrate St. Nicholas Day with your child of Ukrainian heritage or celebrate Chinese New Year with your child born in China.

We celebrate Ethiopian Christmas and Ethiopian Easter separately from our Christmas and Easter as they fall on different days. In doing so, we are able to show our Ethiopian-born children that we value their culture and see it as a part of our family?s identity. We dress in traditional clothing that we purchased while in Ethiopia. We cook injera, doro wat, azita, and shiro. Most importantly, we get together with other Ethiopians and other Ethiopian adoptive families.

Bring Colour Home

Add flair to your holiday celebration by adding decorations or colour from your child?s birth country. You can do this by purchasing Christmas ornaments or other holiday d?cor when you are visiting their country and embellishing the room with colours symbolic of the country or its flag.

Serve Signature Dishes

Food is an easy way to incorporate your child?s native culture into your family?s holiday celebration. You can choose to cook a traditional dish for that particular holiday or just a dish that highlights your child?s birth country. The familiar smells and tastes are sure to bring a smile to your child?s face!

Dress to Impress

Having the entire family wear traditional clothing from your child?s native country unifies the family and shows your child that you are embracing their culture. If you are inviting guests to your celebration, it is a good experience for them to try to come in traditional clothing as well or at least wear something representative of the culture. A celebration highlighting India could require party guests to learn how to wear a Sari. This would prove both fun and educational for them.

Celebrate with Music & Games

Find games that are played in your child?s homeland and duplicate them at home. For many traditional African games, all the supplies that are needed are rocks or beans, though others require more planning and supplies. Playing traditional music and learning dances native to the country are fun for the whole family. YouTube has video tutorials for dances from most countries.

Teach Others

You could even plan a day with your child?s teacher, so that you and your child can go into their classroom and teach the other students about the holiday traditions of their first country. Be sure to make it fun by bringing music, food to share and involving the other students in an interactive activity such as a game.

Gamer hits top 'Guild Wars 2' level before it officially launches

3 hrs.

If you're a fan of massively multiplayer online games, then you're very?likely?waiting, perhaps not-so-patiently, to jump into "Guild Wars 2" ? the highly anticipated online fantasy role-playing?game that?officially?launches Tuesday.

In fact, if you're a big enough fan then?you may already be playing "Guild Wars 2" ? thanks to an early-access?program that opened the gates to the world of?Tyria?on Saturday for those who pre-purchased the game.

If you are one of the?early starters, just how far have you leveled up your character/characters in the past two and a half days? Have you worked your way to?level 10 yet? How about level?20? Apparently a?French gamer going by the name Surfeuze has become the first player to reach level 80 ??which is the highest level?you can achieve in?"Guild Wars 2."?

According to the Massively blog,?Surfeuze is a member of the French guild?War Legend. The guild says it took him about 32 hours to reach the game's cap while?playing as an Elementalist. Apparently he maxed out his character by doing a whole lot of crafting using materials donated by his guild.

But some of?the methods Surfueze used won't be available for much longer.?Over at Reddit,?Mike?O'Brien, president of developer ArenaNet, has chimed in with this:

Level 80 is always something to celebrate, but be aware that this was not through normal leveling. A few users have made us aware of unusual ways to level very fast. We're fixing these issues as I type.

While I can appreciate the desire to set a record, racing to level 80 in 32 hours doesn't actually sound like much ... fun.

I think Massively commenter?yearofshorty?summed it up perfectly when they?compared leveling this fast to?"buying a gourmet steak dinner then putting it into a blender, just so you can consume it as fast as possible."

If you haven't had a chance to play "Guild Wars 2" yet, feed your anticipation with this video from InGame editor Todd Kenreck who takes a look at the game's gorgeous art direction:

Email Marketing Frequency | THMG.com

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

A question I often get asked is how often should I be sending out email campaigns? Should I send them daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, when there?s a full moon!? We all know that emails are a great way of staying in touch with your customers, keeping them informed and ensuring that your business is at the forefront of their minds when they are ready to buy, but if you keep popping up in their inbox then you will start to irritate.

From email marketing research, we know that over 70% of people who unsubscribe from emails do so because of receiving ?too many emails.? As a business owner, I know it can be tempting to keep sending out information, offers etc because we know that sales is a numbers game. The more you contact, the more you eventually

Lexibook kids-tablet coming to the US, makes fifth-graders dream of an Aakash

Lexibook

French educational tech maker Lexibook is bringing its eponymous kiddy-tablet to the US from next month. It's not talking specs or price, but we're expecting it to be close to the Lexibook First currently available in Europe. The seven-inch slate packs a 600MHz processor, 256MB RAM, 4GB storage (expandable to 16GB with an microSD card), parental controls and 802.11 b/g WiFi. The FroYo-running device retails for £150 ($237) over the pond, but if the company tries something similar over here, we suspect people might plump for something a little more powerful, or less expensive, or both.

(AP) ? A chapter of a terror case that has haunted Norway for 13 months ended Friday as confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was declared sane and sent to prison for bomb and gun attacks that killed 77 people and injured 200 others last year.

After deliberating for two months, a five-judge panel in Oslo's district court handed down a sentence of "preventive detention" of at least 10 years and a maximum of 21 years for the right-wing extremist. However, such sentences can be extended under Norwegian law as long as an inmate is considered dangerous.

Breivik, a 33-year-old Norwegian on a mission to expel Muslims from Europe, set off a car bomb that killed eight people outside government headquarters in Oslo and he then killed 69 others in a shooting rampage on Utoya island, where young members of the governing Labor Party had gathered for their annual summer camp. Breivik says he would appeal an insanity ruling but accept a prison term.

Here are some questions and answers about the case and possible outcomes on Friday.

Q: Is Breivik's guilt in question?

A: Essentially, no. He has admitted to the attacks and nothing in the criminal investigation suggests there was anyone else involved. He rejected criminal charges out of principle, saying he doesn't recognize the court's authority because it represents a political system that supports multiculturalism. But that argument is highly unlikely to sway the court, and the same goes for his claim that the killings were justified to protect Norway from becoming overrun by Muslims. Breivik probably knows these are hopeless arguments, because he didn't spend much time on them during the trial, focusing instead on trying to prove that he is a political terrorist and not a madman.

Q: What were the possible outcomes?

A: The key question for the Oslo court to decide was whether Breivik is sane enough to be held criminally responsible for the attacks. If declared insane, he would have been committed to involuntary psychiatric care, indefinitely. But Breivik was deemed sane by the judges and sentenced to "preventive detention." Unlike a regular prison sentence ? which can be no longer than 21 years in Norway ? that confinement option can be extended for as long as an inmate is considered dangerous to society. It also offers more programs and therapy than an ordinary prison sentence. Norway, like nearly all of Europe, doesn't have the death penalty.

Q: So what happens to Breivik after the ruling?

A: Breivik will be taken back to Oslo's Ila Prison, where he has been held in isolation for most of the time since his arrest. The prison built a psychiatric ward just for Breivik in case he's declared insane.

Q: What are the conditions like at Ila? Is it like a two-star hotel?

A: Outside Scandinavia, it may seem that way, though prison spokeswoman Ellen Bjercke pointed out that the biggest hardship of being incarcerated lies in the fact that you cannot leave. The conditions inside are secondary to the loss of freedom, she said. Norway takes pride in its humane penal system, and living conditions in Norwegian prisons are probably far better than in most other countries. For example, other prisoners at Ila have access to school that offers courses from primary grade to university level courses, a library, a gym, work in the prison's various shops and other leisure activities. Because Breivik is held in isolation, without contact with other prisoners, he doesn't have access to those things. In compensation, Ila has given him three cells instead of one. Each is about 86 square feet (8 square meters.) One has gym equipment, another has a bed and the third a desk with a laptop computer. For at least one hour a day, he has access to a small courtyard covered by barbed wire. Prison officials have been more secretive about the psychiatric unit. Bjercke said Breivik would be guarded night and day by a medical staff of 17 in a ward where he is the only patient. Norwegian health authorities, in approving the ward, specified that it must provide access to fresh air, as well as a restraint bed with straps.

Q: Will Breivik ever get out?

A: Legal experts say it's unlikely Breivik will ever be released but no one can say for sure. One thing is certain though: it won't happen for as long as Norwegian authorities consider him dangerous to society. In theory, a patient committed to involuntary psychiatric care should be released if he recovers from the mental illness. But if he's still considered dangerous, he can be transferred to prison under a rarely used Norwegian law. If sent to prison, Breivik could challenge a "preventive detention" sentence every five years. One of the reasons Breivik's attacks were presented in such gruesome detail during the trial was so that the horror of Oslo and Utoya would be well-documented for the day Breivik asks to be released. "Legally speaking, he could of course theoretically be a free man in some years. But realistically speaking he would be incarcerated for perhaps the rest of his life," said Lasse Qvigstad, a former Oslo chief prosecutor.

Q: How does the appeals process work?

A: In Norway, both prosecutors and the defendant can appeal all or parts of the ruling. Breivik's lawyer said Thursday that he will appeal if he's declared insane but would accept a prison term. An appeals trial would likely be held early next year.

Q: So why does Breivik want to be sent to prison? Wouldn't he get off easier with an insanity ruling?

A: Breivik wants to be seen as a political terrorist, or as he calls himself, a "militant nationalist." During the trial he said that being sent to an insane asylum would be the worst thing that could happen to him and accused Norwegian authorities of trying to cast him as sick to deflate his political views. His lawyers say Breivik is already at work writing sequels to the 1,500-page manifesto he released on the Internet before the attacks.

Breivik, survivors welcome Norway prison term

OSLO, Norway (AP) ? It was during breaks between marathon video game sessions in his mother's apartment in Oslo that Anders Behring Breivik drafted his complicated and chilling plan. He would kill indiscriminately with explosives and guns, surrender to authorities if he survived, then prove himself sane in court ? all to publicize a manifesto accusing Muslims of destroying European society.

By any account, it went exactly to plan. A court ruled Friday that Breivik was sane when he killed 77 people, most of them teenagers, in attacks that shook Norway to its core.

"His goal was to be declared sane, so on that point he is satisfied," Breivik's defense lawyer, Geir Lippestad, said.

The Oslo district court found the 33-year-old right-wing extremist guilty of terrorism and premeditated murder for the twin attacks on July 22 last year. Breivik first bombed government headquarters, killing eight people, before going on a shooting massacre on Utoya island that left 69 dead at a summer camp for young members of the governing Labor Party.

Prosecutors had asked for an insanity ruling, which Breivik rejected as an attempt to deflate his radical anti-Muslim views. He smiled with apparent satisfaction when the five-judge panel declared him sane and sentenced him to a 21-year prison sentence that can be extended for as long as he's considered dangerous to society. Legal experts say that likely means he will be locked up for life.

"He has killed 77 people, most of them youth, who were shot without mercy, face to face. The cruelty is unparalleled in Norwegian history," Judge Arne Lyng said. "This means that the defendant even after serving 21 years in prison would be a very dangerous man."

In his final words, Breivik regretted not killing more people, apologizing to other "militant nationalists" for not achieving an even higher death toll. He said he wouldn't appeal the ruling because that would "legitimize" a court he said got its mandate from a political system that supports multiculturalism.

Prosecutors also said they would not appeal, bringing the legal process for Norway's worst peacetime massacre to an end and providing closure for victims' families and survivors, who have had to endure weeks of testimony from Breivik describing the victims as traitors for embracing immigration.

"I am very relieved and happy about the outcome," said Tore Sinding Bekkedal, who survived the Utoya shooting. "I believe he is mad, but it is political madness and not psychiatric madness," Bekkedal said. "He is a pathetic and sad little person."

From Europe's far right, the reaction was mixed. Some argued that Friday's verdict played into their core beliefs, though they have spoken out against his violent rampage.

"It was obviously wrong what he did, but there was logic to all of it," said Stephen Lennon, the 29-year-old leader of the English Defense League, an anti-Muslim group. "By saying that he was sane, it gives a certain credibility to what he had been saying. And that is, that Islam is a threat to Europe and to the world."

Frank Franz, a spokesman for the German far-right party NPD, distanced his party from Breivik.

"We consider his deeds to be those of a murderer, it's as simple as that," Franz told AP. "For us, it had nothing to do with politics."

During the trial, Breivik said the reason for his massacre was to draw attention to a manual of far-right terrorism that he released on the Internet just before the attacks. In it, he predicted that the government would try to cast him as an "insane, inbred, pedophile Nazi loser" if brought before a court.

Breivik's lawyers say he is planning to write new books from Oslo's high-security Ila Prison, where he has been held in isolation since his arrest and where he will likely also serve his sentence. He has access to a computer there but no Internet connection. His lawyers say he has already exchanged letters with supporters, but prison staff said they can stop mail encouraging illegal acts or the creation of criminal networks.

Asked whether he thought Breivik had achieved his desired outcome in the legal case, Prosecutor Svein Holden said: "I don't think Breivik's wishes have had an impact on the court."

Since Breivik admitted to the attacks, his sanity was the key issue to be decided by the trial, with two psychiatric teams reaching opposite conclusions. One gave Breivik a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, a severe mental illness that would preclude imprisonment, while the other found him narcissistic and dissocial ? having a complete disregard for others ? but criminally sane.

The court criticized the psychiatric assessment that found Breivik insane, saying his perception of being a commander in a civil war can be explained in the context of a "fanatic and right-wing extremist view of the world" rather than as delusions of a sick mind.

It also found his controlled behavior while planning and carrying out his complex plot "difficult to reconcile with an untreated form of paranoid schizophrenia."

The son of a Norwegian diplomat and a nurse who divorced when he was a child, Breivik had been a law-abiding citizen until the attacks, except for a brief spell of spray-painting graffiti during his youth.

According to Breivik's manifesto, he plotted for nearly nine years to carry out his attacks, but prosecutors said he only started planning terror after moving back with his mother in 2006. He withdrew from friends and played the video game "World of Warcraft" for 16 hours a day.

Breivik joined a pistol club and started acquiring weapons and explosives, legally, for his attacks. In the spring of 2011, he moved into a farm where he tested his explosives and made the final preparations for his "operation."

Breivik testified during the trial that he expected to be killed by police. Instead, their bungled response allowed him to hunt down panicked teenagers on Utoya for more than an hour before police arrested him.

A boat carrying a SWAT team to Utoya was overloaded and stalled, while Norway's only police helicopter wasn't used because its crew was on vacation.

Norway's justice minister and police chief both resigned in the aftermath and some critics even called on the prime minister to step down.

The court didn't believe Breivik's claims of belonging to a secretive network of "Justiciar Knights," or "Knights Templar." Investigators say it doesn't exist.

The trial could not answer whether the network was a delusion ? Breivik insisted it exists ? or an attempt by him to inspire like-minded to form such a network.

His manifesto spelled out the order's ranks and greeting ? a clenched-fist salute that he flashed at the start of Friday's hearing. It also contained chilling advice for jailed members.

"When incarcerated, the Justiciar Knight should do everything in his power to escape from prison," he wrote. If successful, the "knight" should plot between three to five assassinations as a "bonus operation."

8 Cool Initiatives to Help a Small Business Grow : Money :: American ...

Plain and simple, small-business owners need focused initiatives that will infuse their businesses with capital and people. They need ideas that help drive sales, and resources to help them find financing that actually works for their individual situations. (The national/federal loan programs are largely broken. Read Professor Scott Shane?s post about where small-business owners really get funds; less than three percent come from SBA loans for capital expansion.)

Unfortunately, there are too many well-known initiatives out there that simply aren't delivering, but, if you know where to look, there are also some very helpful resources aimed at local businesses.

Small Business Initiatives Worth Checking Out

  • Independent We Stand is a cool effort sponsored by Stihl (the chainsaw people). Although, still in its infancy it has the potential to help showcase local businesses.

  • Small Business Saturday is sponsored by American Express and it works. Almost three million people have liked it on Facebook and it has encouraged many consumers to shop small and local.?

  • Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses is admirable and appears to be helping local ventures. They committed $500 million to help small business.

  • SBDCnet is a little-known resource for getting your business started or expanding it. This Website is packed with lots of great resources including market research reports on popular small-business opportunities. From coffee shops to starting a janitorial cleaning service, you?ll find good stuff here. (Note: There were a few links that led me to independent sites that I questioned, but overall it is a very strong resource site.)

  • The Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (aka BALLE) offers resources for communities and local businesses. Think of them as LinkedIn for your local community but with membership dues like a Chamber of Commerce.?

  • Create Jobs for USA is co-sponsored by Starbucks and the Opportunity Finance Network. Ultimately, jobs come from small businesses, so the program is aimed at helping owners get cash to hire.

More Resources

Cash mobs are very on-trend, lately. Although it is not one entity, but hundreds of them around the USA and world, this small group is organizing an IndieGoGo fundraising campaign to get organized and provide more resources to local efforts. I?m not convinced that cash mobs will survive over time, but if they inject cash into a struggling local business I?m all for it. (For more on cash mobs, check out Katie Morell's article "How To Attract A Cash Mob.")

And lastly, if you?re looking for a local, regional, or national event, then you?ll want to check out Small Business Trends bi-weekly listing of events.

The Benefits of Choosing Organic Skincare Products ?

Proper treatment of dry skin need not be a mystery. To permanently take care of the condition of your skin, the first thing you need to do is to determine the cause of your dry skin, and it is just then that you can start purchasing the proper product to address that certain issue. Remember, consistency and early intervention is the key, so make sure you stick to whatever skin care regimen it is you are doing at all possible cost. Doing this not only helps in curing your dry skin, but it will also lower the chances of it from taking place.

Possible Causes of Dry Skin

Before looking into the benefits of organic skin care products, it would be best to take a look first at some of the possible causes of dry skin, which are medical condition, dehydration, weather, bathing (also takes away essential oils from it and these oils are the ones responsible for keeping your skin moisturized), and medication.

Why Opt for Organic Skin Care Products

Parabens, as well as other petro-chemicals, are not good for the human body, as they can be taken up in the blood stream. When by-products decay, they can emit a toxic chemical called methanol. In addition, buyers should stay away from products that have formaldehyde. This is utilized as an additive in a lot of skin care products and cosmetics, but what people do not know is that it is a poisonous carcinogen and can be damaging to our body. If what you are using has this kinds of ingredients, they probably have fragrance as well, which is utilized to cover up the odor that is connected with chemical by-products. Fragrance additives can irritate those who have sensitive skin and may give an allergic reaction. A lot of natural beauty supporters recommend that chemical by-products included in non-organic merchandises can become a factor to numerous health problems, like cancer and allergies.

Advantages of Using Organic Products

Aside from making sure your skin is glowing and healthy, making use of organic skin care products has benefits, such as keeping acne and skin illnesses at bay. Unlike the ones that have tons of chemicals, organic skin care products cleanse your skin without those harmful chemicals. In turn, this will stop the emergence of skin illnesses and acne that cause bacteria. Organic products are safe on your skin, but to achieve best results, you need to choose a product that is suitable for the type of your skin.

They can also renew mature skin. Organic skin care products enhance the color and tone of your face and cleanse skin cells, thus improving the skin?s health condition. Furthermore, they are guaranteed to be effective in avoiding the appearance of wrinkles. It is highly recommended that you use organic products on a regular basis to obtain maximum benefit. Lastly, they have no long-standing side effects. Organic skin care products are chemical free, so you do not have to worry about permanent side effects. In fact, organic products can be used as often as you want.

When you want to look your best, consider all natural skin care

Said Bills coach Chan Gailey of Tuesday?s practice, ?There were some glitches, to be honest with you. And we told [the team] we were going to practice just like a game week this week. Spiders on Wednesday, pads on Thursday and spiders back again on Friday. We are doing it the same way this week and we are trying to learn our tempo. Without pads on you have to have great tempo. We have to learn that.?

Most of the players on the Dolphins found out Ryan Tannehill is their starting quarterback by watching TV or reading about it online.

Patriots QBs Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer are competing for the right to be Tom Brady?s primary backup.

Boomer Esiason continues to think Tim Tebow has no business playing quarterback in the NFL.

The Ravens? backup quarterback battle appears to be close.

Bengals DE Jamaal Anderson has played well and appears to be earning a roster spot.

Browns TE Evan Moore knows he?s no lock to make the 53-man roster, but he says he?s not going to let anything bother him.

Steelers OLB Chris Carter is looking like an opening-day starter.

Texans return man Trindon Holliday may be making enough big plays to earn himself a roster spot.

Said Colts CB Jerraud Powers of teammate WR Austin Collie suffering another concussion, ?It?s scary, especially with all the information that?s been coming out the last two years or whatever. You see someone, you want what?s best for them, and he?s a smart enough guy that he?ll make the right decisions. He?s a heck of a player.?

Here?s the BBC?s story on the Jaguars playing an annual game in London.

Titans WR Kenny Britt says he?s not worried about the consequences of his recent DUI arrest: ?That?s just another bump in the road, another pothole in the road that we?ve got to go over and smoothing that out,? Britt said Tuesday. ?That?s something I?m not putting in my head right now, just hoping to recover from these knee injuries.?

Broncos safety Jim Leonhard, who?s recovering from a knee injury, participated in his first practice on Tuesday.

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel says he won?t necessarily follow the usual protocol of having his starters play a lot in the third preseason game and then not play at all in the fourth preseason game.

The Raiders are preparing for this week?s preseason game against the Lions like it?s a regular-season game.

Chargers C Nick Hardwick suffered a concussion in Tuesday?s practice.

There?s not a lot of optimism in Dallas about TE Jason Witten being able to play Week One against the Giants.

Said Giants RB David Wilson of practicing with the starters for the first time, ?It had to sink in. I got out to practice yesterday and you could tell I was a little bit jittery and nervous.?

Philadelphia DE Brandon Graham expects opposing offenses to try screens and draws to slow the Eagles? defense down.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says rookie QBs Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins have a natural feel for reading defenses.

Through two weeks of the preseason, Eric Weems has demonstrated all the reasons the Bears signed him.

The Lions have a close competition at punter.

A lot of Packers will be playing for their jobs in Thursday?s preseason game against the Bengals.

The punt return job in Minnesota is still open.

Said Falcons RB Michael Turner of having just 14 yards on eight carries in the preseason, ?It?s just a glorified practice. You just want to get out there, get the looks and make the corrections from the game tape like you do for any other practice. You still want to look sharp and crisp out there and hopefully we?ll clean all that up this week.?

Panthers starting C Ryan Kalil and backup C Jeff Byers have been competing since their days as USC teammates, when Byers was considered a blue-chip prospect and Kalil struggled to beat him out.

Martez Wilson is staying at defensive end for the Saints, although injuries have raised the possibility that he might move back to linebacker.

The Buccaneers? preseason game against the Patriots will be blacked out on local television.

As the Cardinals wrap up training camp, they still have plenty of questions to answer.

Rams WR Brandon Gibson hopes his chemistry with QB Sam Bradford helps him earn a roster spot.

Randy Moss has convinced many of his 49ers teammates to take up swimming for some additional conditioning work after practice.

For Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, getting the quarterback decision right could define his legacy in Seattle.

Happy Birthday Hayden Panettiere, Brody Jenner and Usain Bolt!

Hayden Panettiere, Brody Jenner and Usain Bolt are among the many celebrities turning another year older and wiser today. Happy birthday, all!

After a number of roles as a child star, Hayden leaped onto the small screen (and into fanboys' hearts) as the amazing Claire Bennett in Heroes.

Now 23, she returns to TV this fall in ABC's Nashville.

Brody Jenner, 29, is best know for getting caught up in the web of drama that was the hit MTV show The Hills for a good couple of seasons there.

He's kept a lower profile of late than his many famous siblings (Kylie and Kendall Jenner) and step-siblings (Kourtney, Khloe and Kim Kardashian).

Still, we see a star-studded night out in Hollywood in his future.

Jamaican track star and fastest man ever Bolt, 26, just won three more Olympic gold medals in London to bring his career total to an amazing six.

Interestingly, Brody's father Bruce Jenner called out Bolt this month after the sprinter claimed he's the best athlete to live. In any case, he's pretty close.

Also celebrating a birthday today: Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall (56), Google co-founder Sergey Brin (39) and country star Kenny Rogers (74).
