Pop Warner Coach Suspended For Bounty Program

Getty Images(NEW YORK) ? The president of the Tustin, Calif., Pop Warner football league and the coach of an elite team there have been suspended while the national organization investigates allegations that 10 and 11-year-old? players were offered cash incentives as high as $50 to intentionally injure their opponents.

?We take this matter very seriously and have asked Tustin Pop Warner head coach Darren Crawford and Tustin President Pat? Galentine to step down until this situation is ?nalized,? executive director of Pop Warner, Jon Butler, said in a statement.

With a 12-1 record last season and an appearance at the Pop Warner Super Bowl, the Cobras were formidable opponents.

But according to allegations from some players and parents, the team was playing dirty.
Although an investigation by the Orange Empire Conference, where the complaint was initially filed, found no wrongdoing, National Pop Warner officials decided to reopen the case ?in light of new information and players coming forward,? Butler said.

A local designee not affiliated with the program has been asked to spearhead an investigation that is expected to last several weeks, according to Pop Warner officials.

Parents claimed that Crawford and former assistant coach Richard Bowman paid players when they took out their opponents in playoff games.

In one instance, a Cobras player was allegedly paid after a running back from Santa Margarita suffered a mild concussion and had to leave the field, the Orange County Register reported.
Crawford and Galentine have denied the allegations of a bounty program at Tustin Pop Warner.
Interim president Mark Gutierrez said he was ?deeply saddened by claims of an alleged bounty program at our league? in a letter to parents.

?It is important that our children have the opportunity to play football in the most supportive environment possible,? he said.

Earlier this year, an NFL investigation found the New Orleans Saints operated on a pay-for-pain system from the 2009 season, when they won the Super Bowl, until 2011.

Cassidy: Apple's Woz is headed for Australia -- eventually

Click photo to enlarge

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he wants to live Down Under. (Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for VES)

The thing you have to know about Woz is that you just never know about Woz.

Yes, Apple (AAPL) co-founder Steve Wozniak is planning to become an Australian citizen and move to Australia. Or New Zealand. Eventually.

"I think it's sort of a neat idea," he said when I reached him Thursday.

Sure. Neat. Move to the other side of the world. Live in an up-until-now-foreign country. Why not?

But that's the thing about Woz and that's why he's come to personify the heart and soul of Silicon Valley. His mind is brilliantly analytical when it comes to technology. Think Apple 1 and Apple II. And yet, when it comes to living, he can still look at life with wonder and amusement.

"It's like a whole new second chance for me to learn about another country's history, to become rooters for their teams," Woz said. "It's sort of fun."

And hey, once you've done "Dancing with the Stars," you can pretty much do anything.

The thing is, Woz told me, he's always liked Australia. The people are nice. It seems a place far away, he said, from the hustle and bustle and the tensions and worries of the United States. (Even if it must have the hustle and bustle and the tensions and worries of Australia.)

Yes, Woz's (eventual) move is the perfect Internet story and it took the Internet

by storm. And while Woz is a big believer in the Internet (surprise), he had to chuckle at reports that he was moving to take advantage of Australia's superior broadband service (not that he doesn't think the superior broadband down under is swell).

Of course, that's not the reason. Everybody knows Woz and his wife, Janet, are moving to Australia because it's a day earlier there, which means Apple products are released there hours before the doors open to the Apple stores in California.

OK, that's not really the reason they're moving but it's a nice perk.

"Australians get things like the newest iPhone, they get them first in the world. I beat California by 17 hours this year," said Woz, who picked up his iPhone 5 while in the country on business and to file the first batch of paperwork to be granted an Australian resident visa.

Ah, paperwork. This is a bit of a process, and Woz said he's in it for the long haul. He said it could take several years to cross all the t's, dot all the i's and carry out various requirements. Once he obtains citizenship, he might choose to live in New Zealand, he says, because it's pleasant and accepts Australian citizens. But really, he said, it's a little early to be nailing down all the details.

A few things, meantime, won't change. He'll continue working for Fusion-io, where he is chief scientist. He wants to keep his U.S. citizenship. And he plans to be a regular in Silicon Valley no matter what country he calls home.

"I actually love my house in California," he said. "I hope that I can keep the house I have now, or at least a house in California, always."

And for Woz fans, who are legion, that may be the best news of all.

(AP) ? A tornado swept through a fair ground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said Saturday.

The Friday tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.

Local media reported the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.

Just inland from the Mediterranean coastal town, five more victims of Friday's flash floods southwest of Gandia were found overnight. They included a middle-aged woman in the town of Lorca.

Last summer Lorca was hit by Spain's deadliest earthquakes in more than 50 years, leaving nine dead.

A spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia told The Associated Press on Saturday that the heavy downpours and resulting high waters had claimed the lives of five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and two in Malaga.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said that a 52-year-old British woman was missing in Almeria as well as one homeless man. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.

Local media reported that hundreds of citizens had to be evacuated throughout the region.

The flooding disrupted high-speed train service between Madrid and Valencia and various regional lines, while bridges and roads were also made impassible.

The heavy rains which started on Friday morning are expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the front moving north toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

Bayer wins early U.S. approval for colon cancer drug

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a new drug for advanced colon cancer developed by Bayer AG, a month ahead of the agency's expected action date for a decision.

The drug, to be sold under the brand name Stivarga, was approved to treat colon cancer that has progressed after prior treatment or that has spread to other parts of the body, the agency said.

"Someone has clearly lit a fire under the FDA," Sanford Bernstein analyst Geoffrey Porges said of the speedy approval. "We're seeing a fairly consistent pattern of drugs for high unmet needs diseases being approved on an expedited basis."

Bayer said Stivarga will be ready for distribution as soon as Friday and set a wholesale price for the drug of $9,350 for a 28-day cycle of treatment.

In pivotal clinical trials, Stivarga - known chemically as regorafenib - helped severely ill patients live on average 1.4 months longer than those who received standard treatment without the Bayer drug. Stivarga plus standard care also delayed tumor growth for an average of two months compared with 1.7 months for standard care alone.

Bayer is currently awaiting a colon cancer approval decision for the drug in Europe and is also seeking U.S. approval of regorafenib as a treatment for gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

"Stivarga is the latest colorectal cancer treatment to demonstrate an ability to extend patients' lives and is the second drug approved for patients with colorectal cancer in the past two months," Richard Pazdur, director of the Office of Hematology and Oncology Products in FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.

In August, the FDA approved Zaltrap, an advanced colon cancer treatment from Sanofi SA and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.

Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc is entitled to a 20 percent royalty payment on global net sales of Stivarga under a settlement agreement with Bayer following a dispute over how closely related the medicine is to Nexavar, the kidney and liver cancer drug that the companies co-developed and share.

Bayer and Onyx will jointly promote Stivarga in the United States.

Porges, Bernstein's biotechnology analyst, called the Onyx royalty agreement, "a fairly attractive deal."

But he said initial sales expectations for Stivarga are relatively modest "because this is really a relatively small indication late in the disease."

However, Morningstar analyst Damien Conover forecast sales of the drug reaching $1 billion by 2020. Bayer declined to provide its own sales forecast for the medicine.

"Bayer has very high expectations for Stivarga," Shannon Campbell, head of oncology for Bayer Healthcare, said in a telephone interview. "We certainly expect that Stivarga is going to play an important role once (patients) have gone through some of the more standard infusion based chemotherapies that are out there."

Stivarga is a pill that works by blocking several enzymes that promote cancer growth.

The drug was reviewed under the FDA's priority review program that provides an expedited six-month review for drugs that offer major advances in treatment or that provide treatment when no adequate therapy exists. A decision had been expected by October 27.

The Stivarga label will include a warning that severe and fatal liver toxicity occurred in some patients treated with the medicine during clinical studies, the FDA said.

In addition to Zaltrap, Stivarga will likely also compete with Roche Holding AG's multibillion-dollar cancer drug Avastin and Erbitux from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co and Eli Lilly and Co.

An estimated 143,460 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and 51,690 will die from the disease in 2012, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Bayer shares rose 1.3 percent to 68.40 euros in Germany.

Onyx shares were up 2.8 percent at $84.85 on Nasdaq.

Spain loses capital in July for 13th month

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain lost billions of euros in capital for a 13th consecutive month in July amid investor fears about its troubled and shrinking economy, although the rate of outflows slowed from the previous month.

Bank of Spain data showed on Friday that capital outflows, excluding central bank operations, amounted to 15 billion euros ($19.3 billion) in July, down from 56.6 billion euros in June.

A total of 331 billion euros of capital has left the country in the 13 months to end-July, equivalent to around a third of the output of the euro zone's fourth-largest economy.

The reduced outflow from June to July was mostly due to fewer interbank operations that involved withdrawing money from Spain, one analyst said, adding that this was volatile data and that not too much should be read into it.

Spain's current account was in surplus by 499.7 million euros in July, the data showed, up from a deficit of 257.2 million euros in June, partly due to inflows of summer tourism revenues.

ECB governor Mario Draghi said in late July that the central bank would do 'whatever it takes' to preserve the euro, words that calmed panicked investors and led to an substantial easing in Spain's borrowing costs.

The government announced more economic reforms and a tough 2013 budget this week in steps seen as preempting the strict terms of any international bailout to reduce the country's high borrowing costs.

Spain is in talks with Brussels about the terms of a possible aid package that would trigger a European Central Bank bond-buying program.

The Bank of Spain data is not the first to show a lessening of capital outflows in recent months.

Consumers and firms pulled money out of Spanish banks in August at a slower rate than in July, although private sector deposits fell to a more than three-year low, ECB data showed on Thursday.

Asian Cricket Council to nominate Afghanistan for ICC Associate ...

Asian Cricket Council to nominate Afghanistan for ICC Associate membership ? Cricket News Update

Following a meeting of its development committee, headed by the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board Zaka Ashraf, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has decided to nominate Afghanistan for a promotion to Associate membership with the International Cricket Council.

The decision was taken at the meeting held on Monday in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, with committee members agreeing on the need to push for the promotion of Afghanistan (currently an Affiliate member) to an ICC Associate member nation.

?Perhaps our most significant decision [taken at the meeting] has been to substantiate the claim of Afghanistan to be an Associate member of the ICC,? confirmed ACC chief executive, Ashraf-ul-Haq on Tuesday in Lahore. ?Afghanistan has been the strongest side among the Affiliate members, so we are backing them for the promotion.

?The applications are in order and we are hoping that at the next ICC annual meeting Afghanistan will be given the status they deserve,? he concluded. While the ACC has informed the ICC of their intent to back Afghanistan, the matter will be taken up formally at the ICC?s annual conference, to be held in June 2013.

Earlier this year in April, the Afghanistan Cricket Board announced an organisational review of its structure in a bid to push for Associate membership, and the funding from the ICC which comes with the promotion.

The review was sanctioned with the intent to provide better leadership for the board, put together a qualified team for the cricket administration in the country, and nurture the growth and progress of the domestic cricket infrastructure. The changes were made with the purpose of improving the administration in order to meet the standards required by the ICC.

In addition to administrative developments, the Afghanistan national team has also been making waves in the international cricket arena, having emerged as one of the most prominent Affiliate member states.

Having played 23 ODIs, out of which they have won 12, the Afghanistan team has earned ODI status which is valid until 2013, in addition to having played their first two one-days against Full Member nations (Pakistan and Australia) this year.

The team has also played 13 T20Is, and breezed through this year?s ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, losing only to Ireland in the final. They managed to give India a run for their money in the actual event, but were unable to stand up to England, and eventually exited the 2012 edition of the World T20.

In addition to announcing their support for Afghanistan?s promotion, the ACC meeting also focused on approving a US$6.1m budget in order to aid the development of 18 Asian non-Test playing nations, alongside confirming that the four Asian Test-playing nations (Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh) would aid the less experienced Asian sides, and issue them invitations to their national academies.

How Twitter Gets Me 100's of Qualified Real

Next, Follow as many people as you can.? To do this, look under the Follow/Unfollow Users menu and click where it says Follow.? In the part of the screen where it says ?Send Follows Now? in blue text, set the number to a very high number (eg. 5000) and set the Time Delay Between Follows to 1-23 seconds.? Then click the Start button in this area to commence the automated Follow procedure.

From Day 3 onward, do everything that you did in Day 2 every day.

This may all sound complicated, but once you get the hang of it (and you should pretty quickly) it will all be very simple and easy for you to do.? Once you have this system in place and have your list of people to follow, the maximum amount of time you?ll need to spend with Tweet Adder each day is about 5 minutes.

So that brings us to the next part of our Twitter network building efforts.? We need to ask ourselves: who do we want to be in our network?? These will be the people we want to follow on a daily basis.

Who To Follow

Local Real Estate Sales Reps

We all know that real estate sales reps rely heavily on each other: when we have a listing we rely on a buyer rep, and when we?re representing a buyer we?re looking to other rep?s listings for their dream home.? So the #1 spot to get buyer or seller prospects for your business is your local competitors.

Start with finding your most direct local competitors (IE the reps who regularly work your farm area).? You will already know many of them by name.? Look up the websites of brokerages in your farm area, find the twitter link of each sales rep at those brokerages, and follow all of them.? If the Twitter links are not on the brokerage sites then visit each sales rep?s website and find the Twitter account info there.? Also find the Twitter account for each of these brokerages (assuming it exists).? This will likely have many if not all the sales reps from that office following that account.? This is a great way to speed up your search for local sales reps, especially when they?re large brokerages.

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK --?Stocks are lower at midday as unrest simmers in Europe.?

Just before noon on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average is off 27 points at 13,430. the Standard & Poor's 500 index is down eight at 1,434. And the Nasdaq composite index is down 29 at 3,089.?

European stocks are having their worst day in months as unrest threatens to boil over in Greece, where deep budget cuts have eroded people's living standards, and in Spain.?

In the U.S., the median price of new homes sold in August rose by a record amount, while sales of new homes dipped slightly.

Stronger data on the U.S. housing market have helped insulate stocks in recent weeks from fears about the global economy. Stocks' other main source of support, the Federal Reserve's program to boost the economy by pumping money in, lost some luster Tuesday after a key Fed official expressed skepticism about the plan.?

"There was some optimism coming into the market, and that's usually when you're most vulnerable to sell-offs when there are negative headlines" like the Fed official's comments, unrest in Europe and weaker data about the U.S. economy, said Todd Salamone, director of research at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

Indexes had risen to levels they hadn't beat for months or years, Salamone said, creating "an almost perfect storm in terms of the vulnerability to short-term impacts.'

The dip in home sales hurt homebuilder stocks. PulteGroup Inc. fell 5.5 percent, KB Home 5.4 percent and Beazer Homes USA Inc. 4.7 percent.

European stocks were having their worst day in months as unrest threatened to boil over in Greece, where deep budget cuts have eroded people's living standards, and Spain, where citizens are resisting a likely bailout from international lenders. Earlier, Asian stocks closed lower.

The euro fell sharply against the dollar, and the price of oil dropped below $90 per barrel for the first time since early August.

Rising demand for lower-risk investments fed strong bids for U.S. Treasury debt. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.63 percent from 1.67 percent late Tuesday. A bond's yield falls as its price increases.

The moves come a day after the worst sell-off for the S&P 500 in three months. Charles Plosser, president of the Fed's Philadelphia branch, told an audience Tuesday that the Fed's effort to support the economy would likely fall short of its goals.

Stocks had rallied this summer before and after the Fed announced the plan to buy $40 billion in mortgage bonds each month until the economy strengthens. As doubts about it sink in, stocks are falling back to where they were when the deal was announced.

Below, Katie Stockton of MKM Partners provides discusses buying opportunities in the markets on CNBC.

White matter, old dogs, and new tricks

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

Most people equate "gray matter" with the brain and its higher functions, such as sensation and perception, but this is only one part of the anatomical puzzle inside our heads. Another cerebral component is the white matter, which makes up about half the brain by volume and serves as the communications network.

The gray matter, with its densely packed nerve cell bodies, does the thinking, the computing, the decision-making. But projecting from these cell bodies are the axons?the network cables. They constitute the white matter. Its color derives from myelin--a fat that wraps around the axons, acting like insulation.

Alex Schelgel, first author on a paper in the August 2012 Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, has been using the white matter as a landscape on which to study brain function. An important result of the research is showing that you can indeed "teach old dogs new tricks." The brain you have as an adult is not necessarily the brain you are always going to have. It can still change, even for the better.

"This work is contributing to a new understanding that the brain stays this plastic organ throughout your life, capable of change," Schlegel says. "Knowing what actually happens in the organization of the brain when you are learning has implications for the development of new models of learning as well as potential interventions in cases of stroke and brain damage."

Schlegel is a graduate student working under Peter Tse, an associate professor of psychological and brain sciences and a coauthor on the paper. "This study was Peter's idea," Schlegel says. "He wanted to know if we could see white matter change as a result of a long-term learning process. Chinese seemed to him like the most intensive learning experience he could think of."

Twenty-seven Dartmouth students were enrolled in a nine-month Chinese language course between 2007 and 2009, enabling Schlegel to study their white matter in action. While many neuroscientists use magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in brain studies, Schlegel turned to a new MRI technology, called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). He used DTI to measure the diffusion of water in axons, tracking the communication pathways in the brain. Restrictions in this diffusion can indicate that more myelin has wrapped around an axon.

"An increase in myelination tells us that axons are being used more, transmitting messages between processing areas," Schlegel says. "It means there is an active process under way."

Their data suggest that white matter myelination is precisely what was seen among the language students. There is a structural change that goes along with this learning process. While some studies have shown that changes in white matter occurred with learning, these observations were made in simple skill learning and strictly on a "before and after" basis.

"This was the first study looking at a really complex, long-term learning process over time, actually looking at changes in individuals as they learn a task," says Schlegel. "You have a much stronger causal argument when you can do that."

The work demonstrates that significant changes are occurring in adults who are learning. The structure of their brains undergoes change.

"This flies in the face of all these traditional views that all structural development happens in infancy, early in childhood," Schlegel says. "Now that we actually do have tools to watch a brain change, we are discovering that in many cases the brain can be just as malleable as an adult as it is when you are a child or an adolescent."

Noida farmers want denotification of City Center ... - Real Estate India

??|?? September 26, 2012 ?? 08:52am ??|Contributed by manoja

NOIDA: Villagers of Noida seem unrelenting a day after the Supreme Court issued a notice to UP government over the petition of 94 Noida farmers from Nithari, Morna and Chaura villages accusing the Authority of misusing its powers by acquiring land in 1976 and letting it lie idle for 34 years. The farmers want denotification of the land that was allotted to Wave Infratech in March last year for the ambitious City Center project.

Noida Authority refused to comment on the implication of the order before it receives a copy of the SC notice even as work on the site is currently on. Sources said that while the Authority will submit a ?suitable reply to the court once it receives the copy of the notice. The notice by itself does not imply that work at the City Center site needs to be halted.?

?We can comment on the matter only after we deliberate on the matter with our legal officers. However, the state has never been against the farmers and anyone who has a problem can approach the Authority for redressal,? Authority officials said. The Authority also refused to comment on why the 152 acre plot was kept idle for 34 years.

Through a written statement, the executive director of Wave Infratech, R K Jain, said, ?Wave Infratech acquired the 152 acre of land in 2011 through fair competitive bidding from Noida authorities by outbidding other real estate developers with the winning bid of Rs 6,500 crore. We never purchased this land from the farmers directly, so the said issue is between the farmers and the state government.?

?The Authority did not give us a fair hearing at the time of acquiring our land. We feel cheated and we have told the court we must be given our land back,? said Dinesh Sharma of Nithari village.

Meanwhile, another group of greater Noida farmers is now protesting against another Wave Infratech project, the ?Wave Hi-tech city? that falls partly in Greater Noida and partly in Ghaziabad. These farmers are demanding compensation at par with Noida Extension villagers and have called for a mahapanchayat on Wednesday in Dujana village.

Scientists predict major shifts in Pacific ecosystems by 2100

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? What if you woke up every day to find that the closest grocery store had moved several miles farther away from your home? Over time, you would have to travel hundreds of extra miles to find essential food for yourself and your family. This is potentially a scenario faced by thousands of marine animals affected by climate change.

A new study published in Nature Climate Change examines the distribution of various open ocean animals in the North Pacific and explores how that could change over the next century as global ocean temperatures increase and productivity levels shift. The researchers conclude that some critical ocean habitats could undergo significant changes in location, moving more than 600 miles from where they are now, while other habitats could remain relatively unchanged.

Among large animals, loggerhead turtles, some sharks and blue whales may face the harshest impacts of climate change while some seabirds may actually benefit. Not only are species at risk, but also coastal communities and industries could feel the impact since top predator habitat shifts can result in the displacement of fisheries and ecotourism, such as whale watching.

"For species already stressed by overfishing or other human impacts, increased migration time and loss of habitat could be a heavy blow," said Elliott Hazen, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researcher on the project who is affiliated with the Center for Ocean Solutions at Stanford. "But if we can build some plausible scenarios of how marine ecosystems may change, this may help efforts to prioritize and proactively manage them."

In order to carry out their study, the authors employed complex mathematical models with data from the decade-long "Tagging of Pacific Predators" (TOPP) project, in which 4,300 electronic tags placed on 23 species from 2000 to 2009 created unprecedented insight into migration patterns and hotspots of predator species in the northern Pacific.

Satellite measurements of sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-a (used to estimate surface productivity) were combined with the tracking data to identify "key habitat areas" for a variety of different ocean predators. The researchers then used climate models of ocean temperature and productivity to ascertain how those key habitat areas might change in the face of ocean warming.

One of these key habitat areas, known as the North Pacific Transition Zone, marks the interface between cold, nutrient-rich polar water to the north and warmer, nutrient-poor water to the south. This region is used by a variety of ocean predators, including marine mammals, tunas and seabirds, as a corridor across the Pacific Ocean basin. The study suggests that this critical region could shift by as much as 600 miles, resulting in a 20 percent loss of species diversity in the region.

Other critical habitat areas, however, may experience little or no impact. The California Current, which runs along the west coast of North America, supports a variety of open ocean predators each year, when cold, nutrient-rich water creates regions of high productivity. This so-called upwelling cycle would likely continue despite ocean warming. "The fact that tagging indicates this is the number one lunch stop in town along the most populous coast in the nation -- and stabilizes in a warming world -- increases our opportunity to consider how to protect these hot spots," said Barbara Block, the Charles and Elizabeth Prothro Professor in Marine Sciences at Stanford, who is heavily involved in TOPP.

Among the Pacific's top predators, turtles, sharks and marine mammals such as whales appear to be most at risk from habitat shifts associated with Pacific warming. In some cases, predicted losses in essential habitat ranged as high as 35 percent.

But animals such as seabirds and tunas may benefit from climate-change-related shifts that could actually increase their potential habitat for foraging due to their broader tolerances to temperature.

"The differences from one species to another is their ability to adapt to temperatures and to use multiple ocean areas," said Hazen. "Having multiple sources of food, migration corridors and areas to call home provides a buffer against climate variability and change."

"Modeling of future scenarios is used in national security, financial investing and other critical areas," said Larry Crowder, the science director of the Center for Ocean Solutions, who was involved in the study.

"Here we use it to envision climate change impacts on large predators in the Pacific so that steps can be taken to better manage species that are important both commercially and for conservation goals," he said.

Based on these predictions, marine and coastal managers may alter fishing catches or revamp marine protected areas.

The research was a collaboration including Salvador Jorgensen of Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station, Ryan Rykaczewski of the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and Steven Bograd of NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center.

The Center for Ocean Solutions is a collaboration among Stanford University's Woods Institute for the Environment and Hopkins Marine Station, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

Escaped N.C. murderer eludes bloodhounds, choppers

Bloodhounds that tracked an escaped double murderer were able to follow his scent for only a short distance, making authorities fear today that the convict could have been picked up by an accomplice and could be "hundreds of miles away."

James Ladd, 51, slipped away from the Tillery Correctional Cente, a minimum security prison farm, on Sunday morning while doing farm work. Authorities found his abandoned tractor at 10 a.m., said Keith Acree, North Carolina prison spokesperson.

A helicopter flew over rural Tillery, N.C., Sunday night searching for the convicted murderer, who was given three consecutive life sentences in 1981. Bloodhounds also assisted in the ground search, however Acree said they were only able to follow Ladd's scene for a short distance.

"At this point it's been 24 hours, so if he got a ride he could be hundreds of miles away at this point," Acree said.

Ladd was convicted of robbing and fatally shooting two men on a farm 31 years ago. His prison behavior included only minor infractions, most recently for unauthorized tobacco use, and had won Ladd assignment to the farm which allowed him to work outside of the prison's walls.

"He's been a good worker on the farm, a very trouble free inmate," Acree said.

Ladd is now considered dangerous and should not be approached, Acree said. Anyone who spots the inmate is instead asked to contact local authorities.

VINTAGE: Superbird Stars In Las Vegas

Probably the most outrageous car in U.S. showrooms in 1970 was the Plymouth Road Runner Superbird, an 18-foot-long aerodynamic muscle car that was deeply influenced by NASCAR racing and Warner Bros. cartoons. With its lofty rear wing and long added-on nose, the Superbird followed hot on the heels of the equally wild 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona.

The Superbird brought the concept to full fruition, though only for a single year.

The Superbird's most-enduring feature is its towering rear wing. (Photo: Barrett-Jackson) Barrett-Jackson's beautiful example of a rare 426/425hp Hemi Superbird (Lot #670) on Saturday earned $297,000, including buyer fee, one of the highest sales at the Las Vegas auction. Immaculately restored by Premier Body and Paint from a car with just over 20,000 original miles, the bright-yellow Superbird was rightfully one of the featured cars for the Vegas auction.

Just a limited number of ?winged warriors? were sold by Plymouth for homologation as a NASCAR entry, and this particular ?bird is rare even in this small flock.

?They only made 1,900-some of these cars, and they only made about 100 Hemi Superbirds,? said Darren Jasper, one of the partners of the rural Missouri shop that performed the restoration. ?The way the paperwork breaks it down, it?s one of only two that was ever made with the combination of the 426 and the color with an automatic in it. With the options on our car, it?s actually one of one; what breaks it down to be a one of one is actually the wheels.?

The wheels that are on the Plymouth are correct, Jasper added. ?That is coded out on the Broadcast Sheet. That?s the wheels that belong on it.?

Jasper and his partner, Jeff Abercrombie, own the car and have consigned it to the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction under their dealership name, Premier Classics, he said. Their shop doesn?t specialize in Mopars, but this isn?t their first go-round with a Superbird.

The Superbird at Barrett-Jackson is one of the few produced with a 426 Hemi V8. (Photo: Barrett-Jackson) ?We do a little bit of everything,? Jasper said. ?That just happened to be one of the cars we ran across. We knew it was a rare car because we?ve done six of those cars now for different people. But we own this one.?

The Superbird and the earlier Dodge Daytona were efforts by Chrysler racing designers to use wind tunnels to create aerodynamic cars to run on NASCAR?s high-speed ovals. As the story goes, Richard Petty was driving for Plymouth when he got a load of the Daytona on the track in 1969 and wanted Plymouth to produce a similar race car. But Plymouth wasn?t prepared to build it.

In anger, Petty went over to Ford to drive for them, a relationship that lasted one year until the Superbird was readied and he was lured back.

Because the Belvedere that Plymouth had been racing was a slightly different shape than the Dodge Charger, additional engineering needed to be done for a similar aerodynamics formula to work. Repeated attempts to apply it to the Belvedere were unsatisfactory, so the designers switched the platform to the one used for the Road Runner, which still needed more aerodynamic experimentation as well.

Superbird's streamlined nose added an additional 19 inches to its length. (Photo: Barrett-Jackson) They developed their own more streamlined nose cone with retractable headlights ? which added 19 inches to the car?s overall length ? and the wing is broader than the one on the Charger. The distinctive reverse scoops on the front fenders scavenged air from the wheel wells, adding to the aerodynamics.

The refinements of the Superbird produced a wind-cheater that could soar at high speeds, the rear wing adding downforce in the rear to enhance traction. The aerodynamics of the Superbird reputedly beats many of the streamlined cars built today.

Under NASCAR homologation rules of the day, Plymouth had to produce just over 1,900 Superbirds for sale to the public. Soon, Plymouth dealerships had Superbirds in their showrooms, complete with graphics of the Warner Bros. Road Runner cartoon character holding a crash helmet and equipped with a horn that made his distinctive ?beep-beep? sound.

Android turns four, enthusiasm for dessert foods unabated

There's nothing quite like having your birthday on a weekend. And while we're sure that Android was out late last night, dining on sweets with its fellow mobile operating systems, we'd like to wish Google's OS a very happy birthday. It was this day in 2008 that the Android team unveiled its 1.0 SDK, release 1 -- a milestone that coincided with the announcement of T-Mobile's G1, which would get the new OS into consumer hands around a month or so later, finally delivering the promise of a long rumored "Googlephone." Android was a bit of a late bloomer, but now, toward the end of 2012 with 4.1 Jelly Bean beginning to bloom, it's hard to remember a time when it wasn't a dominate player in the ever more crowded mobile space. With that in mind, we're raising a glass to you, Android -- a glass of something sweet, naturally.

Boating Meeting Requirements Like Recreation Sports Career

Boating is not only considered one of the great forms of recreation and entertainment, but it is also regarded as a great form of luxury. Apart from these entertainment factors, a person can own a boat as a fishing boat. Boat racing is an exciting kind of sports. Whatever the usage, there is considerable demand of different kinds of boats. There are several companies, renowned for selling boats of internationally acclaimed makers. As these boats are quite expensive, it is necessary to do a detailed research about these things before placing an order. In the case of luxurious boating and cruising experience, yacht is one of the most common types of boats. As a yacht combines a plethora of qualities like high performance, advanced technology, stylish and slick look and luxury, it becomes a natural choice of a people interested in the luxurious boats. It also offers superb boating experience. Floating freely in the blue see in a sunny day on a luxurious yacht is a thrilling experience. Ferratti, one of the most famous boat makers, uses The ARG system or Anti Rolling Gyros technology, which enables a boat to reduce rolling up to 50 percent for a comfortable journey. It also decreases the sound of the engine.

Riva, Pershing, Custom Line, Itama, Mochi Craft are some of the other famous boat makers. The boats manufactured by these companies combines high class performance along with comfort and stylish looks. Everyone would agree on the point that a beautiful yacht, cutting up the waves of the blue sea is indeed a spectacular sight. Apart from boats like yachts, sports boats, fishing boats or a carrier boat, high speed jet boat is a popular choice among the regular boat users. There are many people who invest a sum in buying jet boat, and make money by renting them. As this kind of boat is exceedingly and easily manoeuvrable, it is hugely used by water patrolling team, coast guards, navy and military activities. It is possible to suddenly stop the boat, even if it is on the full speed. This boat is also highly popular in adventure tourism.

In the case of boating for fun or as a carrier, jet boat is also widely used. There are many makers of sports jet boats, designed especially for any kind of river or an artificially designed race course. A jet boat can be of immense use in the fishing job. In the matter of exploration activities, a jet boat is of excellent use too. As a jet boat does not have an external rotating part, it is safe for the animals living in the water. Jet boats are also used as rigid-hulled inflatable boats. If a client is interested on buying a sports boat, he must see if the boat meets the standard of easy controlling along and a stylish look. A customer may also take a chance in the second hand boats also, but it is crucial to examine properly the functionalities of the boat.
