YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio ? Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan told supporters in Youngstown ?the best way to represent people well is to understand people well.?

He spoke to a crowd at Youngstown State University on Saturday and connected with the attendees by noting the area reminded him of his blue-collar, factory town in Wisconsin.

?What I was taught growing up, we need a strong manufacturing base in America if we want a strong middle class in America, if we want good jobs, if we want a high standard of living,? Ryan said.

He reminded voters about the big choice to be made in November, and that this isn?t an ordinary election.

?We are deciding what kind of country are we going to have for a generation?? What kind of people are we going to be?? Big decisions need to be made,? Ryan said.

?The President had his chance, he made his choices.? He came in with one party rule, able to do everything of his own choosing, and just look at where we are now,? he continued.

Ryan painted a dire picture of the labor force and the national debt and accused the current administration of ignoring trade problems with China.

?We?re gonna do something about it,? Ryan said of his ticket.? ?We?re gonna stop this kind of cheating from occurring.? If people are manipulating our currency, we?re gonna say that they?re manipulating our currency! If they?re stealing our products we?re gonna say stop stealing our products or else you have consequences!?

Jessica Kershaw, the press secretary for Obama for America, released a statement in response that said:

?Congressman Ryan?s tough rhetoric can?t hide the fact that Mitt Romney will never crack down on China?s cheating ? just look at his record. When President Obama stood up to China on behalf of American tire workers, Romney called it ?decidedly bad for the nation.? In the private sector, he led investments in companies that shipped American jobs to China, and in a Chinese company known for the cheating he condemns today. Now, experts say his tax plan could create as many as 800,000?jobs overseas while independent economists agree his plans could slow our recovery and cost us American jobs. A PowerPoint can?t hide the simple truth: all Romney and Ryan are offering is the same failed policies that led to the crisis and punished middle class families in the first place.?

?President Obama and too many people like him in Washington have become more concerned and worried about their next election than they have about the next generation,? Ryan told those in Youngstown, ?and we have to stop that before it gets out of our control.?

Ryan took questions from the audience in a town hall-style before he concluded his talk.

He visited the St. Vincent DePaul Society soup kitchen in Youngstown after the campaign event.

Ryan planned to speak at?Landmark Aviation South in Cincinnati on Monday.
