Rapist suspected of Moira Anderson murder 'may have killed others ...

A woman who believes her father abducted and murdered schoolgirl Moira Anderson in 1957 says he may have been responsible for more children's deaths.

Sandra Brown said Alexander Gartshore was "every bit as much a paedophile as Jimmy Savile" and believes he dumped Moira's remains in a family grave shortly after killing her.

Forensic experts in Coatbridge are currently examining the burial plot of Sinclair Upton, who died a few weeks after Moira disappeared at the age of 11.

Moira's family successfully gained a court order last year to allow them to exhume the grave in Old Monkland Cemetery in Coatbridge.

Gartshore, a local bus driver, was later convicted of child rape before dying in 2006.

His daughter said he knew of Mr Upton's death and would have driven past the cemetery on his bus route, allowing him to observe that the grave had been opened for the burial.

Ms Brown said: "My father was every bit as much a paedophile as Jimmy Savile ever was, and my sad conclusion is that Moira is not the only child in the central belt of Scotland who suffered this fate.

"I don't want to leave here until really I know what the final answer is. Even if it's a negative outcome, it's an answer.

"We hope very much it's a positive outcome and we think there's lots of reasons why we are here. It's not a treasure hunt."

Work to examine the grave began on Tuesday morning, with Dundee University forensic anthropologist working along with a Strathclyde Police team.

The search was held up briefly on Wednesday to deal with an unstable headstone, but work is said to be progressing well and investigators are understood to have reached the lower layers of the grave.
