HOUSTON (May 23, 2013) A new report from the Institute of Medicine says schools should be responsible for helping pupils engage in at least 60 minutes of vigorous or moderate intensity activity during each school day.

No more than half of American youth meet current evidence-based guidelines of at least an hour of vigorous or moderate intensity physical activity daily, according to the report, which was released today.

"Because children are in school for nearly half of their waking hours, the committee recommends a Whole-of-School approach to strengthening physical activity in schools," said Harold W. Kohl III, Ph.D., professor of epidemiology and kinesiology at The University of Texas School of Public Health, part of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). "The approach would target physical education, active commuting, before and after-school activities, sports and other opportunities to help children meet the 60 minutes per day of vigorous or moderate intensity physical activity."

Kohl chaired the committee that wrote the report.

The "Whole-of-School" approach would encourage activities such as walking or riding a bike to school while discouraging inactivity. Recess, lunch breaks and frequent classroom breaks should be included and not taken away as punishment, according to the report.

Although many state laws require some physical education, the report urges the U.S. Department of Education to include physical education as a core subject. The report says that quality physical education can potentially influence body mass index (BMI) and other important health outcomes in youth.

"Physical activity is so central to children's health, development and learning that schools should naturally be involved with physical activity for students," Kohl said. "Research shows that physical activity helps children think faster, improves their cognitive performance and helps them reach their academic potential."

An estimated 17 percent of children in the United States are obese. Since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents has almost tripled. Childhood obesity can lead to hypertension, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and breast and colon cancer.

The report also says education and public health agencies should monitor physical activity and physical education in the schools to provide a foundation to plan, develop and implement physical health policies that could give families and government officials the data and knowledge to help support the "Whole-of-School" approach to physical education.

Parents are the first line of defense to help promote healthy lifestyles for their children, Kohl said.

"Parents can also do many things to help their kids become more active," Kohl said. "First, they can talk to the principal at their child's school to ensure that all children have access to physical education, and they can be a good role model for their children by being active every day with their kids."

(AP) ? The United States and Israel raised hopes Thursday for a restart of the Middle East peace process, despite little tangible progress so far from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's two-month-old effort to get Israelis and Palestinians back to the negotiating table.

As they met in Jerusalem, Kerry praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the "seriousness" with which he is looking at ways to revitalize peace hopes. Kerry expressed optimism without outlining any concrete strategy for ending a stalemate between the two sides that has seen them hardly negotiate one-on-one at all over the last 4? years.

"I know this region well enough to know there is skepticism, in some quarters there is cynicism and there are reasons for it," Kerry told reporters. "There have been bitter years of disappointment. It is our hope that by being methodical, careful, patient ? but detailed and tenacious ? that we can lay on a path ahead that can conceivably surprise people and certainly exhaust the possibilities of peace."

"That's what we're working towards," said Kerry, who met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas later Thursday in Ramallah.

Netanyahu said his conversation with the top American diplomat would touch on mutual concerns about Iran and Syria. "But above all," he said, "what we want to do is restart the peace talks with the Palestinians."

"It's something I want, it's something you want," Netanyahu told Kerry. "It's something I hope the Palestinians want as well and we ought to be successful for a simple reason: When there's a will, we'll find a way."

The visit, Kerry's fourth trip to the Jewish state since taking office as secretary of state in February, coincides with deepening pessimism from Palestinian officials about the new peace push. They are planning to resume their campaign of seeking membership in key international organizations as early as next month in a bid to put pressure on Israel into offering some concessions.

Without major U.S. pressure on Israel, the outlook seems bleak. The most immediate divide concerns the issue of Israeli settlement building in the West Bank and east Jerusalem ? lands that Israel conquered in the 1967 Mideast war and which the Palestinians hope to include in their state.

Kerry brought "nothing new" to his discussions with Abbas, lamented one Palestinian official familiar with the talks. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the private meetings, said Palestinian expectations remain low because they see Kerry "trying to accommodate the Israelis, not pressure the Israelis."

While Palestinians have praised Kerry's efforts, they say there has been little progress ahead of what they believe to be a June 7 deadline for action. They are already beginning work on a "day-after" strategy.

And they say there is no point in negotiating while Israel continues to build Jewish settlements. More than 500,000 Israelis now live in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, making it increasingly difficult to partition the land between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel also captured the Gaza Strip in 1967, though it withdrew from the territory in 2005.

The Palestinians have demanded that Israel freeze settlement construction and accept the pre-1967 frontiers as the baselines of a future border. While previous Israeli leaders have used the 1967 lines as a starting point for talks, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin says negotiations should begin without any preconditions.

When President Barack Obama took office in 2009, he took a tough line against the settlements and prodded Israel into a partial construction freeze. But Israel refused to extend the freeze, and a short-lived round of negotiations in 2010 quickly collapsed. Obama similarly tried unsuccessfully to press Israel into accepting the 1967 lines as a baseline for talks.

Fed up with the impasse and disillusioned with Obama, the Palestinians last fall won recognition from the U.N. General Assembly as a nonmember state, an upgraded diplomatic status that gives them access to key U.N. bodies. The U.S. was one of just eight countries that sided with Israel in opposing the bid.

Israel fears the Palestinians will now seek membership in international agencies to promote an anti-Israel agenda. Its biggest concern is that the Palestinians will try to join the International Criminal Court and try to press war crimes charges against Israel.

Israel's chief peace negotiator, Tzipi Livni, said Thursday that Israel must push forward with peace efforts, in a message directed mainly to hardliners in her own country.

"The Palestinian issue isn't something that will disappear and it is not an issue where someone can say, 'There are more worrying things, so let's not deal with it,'" she told Israel Radio.

"I still think that the freeze of the past four years is bad," she said, speaking in Hebrew. "As time elapses, the ability to ignite the negotiations gets more problematic. The price that Israel pays both in the short and long-term are higher. And therefore the freeze does not serve those that want to reach an agreement."

Livni said the Israeli-Palestinian standoff only serves those who believe in mantras like "here we are holding on to the land, here we built another house, here we prevented an agreement."

"This isn't me and I don't believe it represents the mainstream or the basic position of the Israeli public," she said. "And I believe I represent the Israeli national and security interests in the long-term."

Kerry's plan remains opaque, even to officials in the Obama administration.

One element will clearly focus on improving the Palestinian economy by spurring private investment. He also recently persuaded the 22-member Arab League to renew a decade-old peace offer to Israel, with new incentives aimed at making it more attractive to Israel.

But he has yet to wrest any clear overture from the Israelis.

Meeting Israeli President Shimon Peres on Thursday evening, Kerry said the moment was critical "for the region, and particularly for Israel and for Palestine."

"There is an opportunity, but for many reasons it's not on the tip of everybody's tongue," he said. "The people in Israel aren't waking up every day and wondering if tomorrow (there will) be peace because there is a sense of security, and a sense of accomplishment and a sense of prosperity.

"But I think if you look over the horizon," he added, "one can see the challenges. And I think that the importance of trying to resolve this in this moment, where there is willingness for people to look for a way, can't be overstated."

Google Glass marks paradigm shift in technology

Dubai: The future is here and it?s glass ? Google Glass to be precise.

And this new invention could have a far more profound impact in shaping our world.

If you have arrived late to the party, here?s a bit of info. Google Glass is a computer loaded onto sunglasses. And it can click images, record video, surf the net and do a whole lot more. Except maybe boil an egg.

Technology gurus are already calling wearable computers the next big shift in technology, the same way smartphones marked a leap from computers. And with Apple and Samsung already burning the midnight oil thinking of ways to make wearable technology work in different areas, it could indeed be the next ?in? thing.

Article continues below

?Wearable technology is the next wave,? said Ashish Panjabi, COO of Jacky?s Electronics. ?We don?t need to watch Iron Man to imagine this, it?s becoming a reality bit by bit.

Ramy Kandil, Google MENA PR, told XPRESS how the new technology works. ?Glass is a new wearable technology that goes beyond what you can do with a smartphone to free your hands and attention, making it easier for you to access the information you want and communicate with the people you care about. The display is up high and can be controlled by your voice, so you can live in the moment without looking down repeatedly or rummaging in your purse or pocket.?

There?s a small screen above one eye (according to Google the display is ?the equivalent of a 25-inch high definition screen from eight feet away?) with motion sensor, camera and microphones that can take pictures and videos, provide turn-by-turn directions through Google Maps (connected wirelessly through your smartphone).

You can also surf the net, access mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc (Glass-enabled Facebook and Twitter apps have already been launched) by connecting through your phone. You can also ?ask? the device to do things and allow networking contacts to see in real time what the wearer sees through the device camera, and retrieve info from the web by connecting wirelessly to a user?s cellphone.

Wait, there?s more. The device can also be used to make phone calls and receive (on the screen) and send (voice command) text messages. ?The potential of Google Glass depends on how innovative app developers get. Who would have thought five years ago that a smartphone which was typically seen as a business device, would be used extensively for gaming, health applications, a music player, an alarm clock or a navigation device?,? says Panjabi.

However, even as Google has won fans across the globe for its standout invention, others are queasy about the potential for misuse, given the fact it can click images and record far less conspiciously than other devices.

Kandil allayed such fears saying protecting the privacy and security of users? data is top priority at Google. ?Central to that is offering easy-to-use controls that allow people to manage information they store with Google. You sign into a Google account when you use Glass, which means you have controls: e.g. photos and videos you take with Glass will appear in your private Instant Upload album on Google+; you can share content with your Circles.

?The privacy and security of the data that users store with Google is central to our approach to handling government requests for their information. This is no different for Glass,? he said.

Panjabi also dismissed such fears. ?Some years ago there was an uproar when mobile phones had built-in cameras. Saudi Arabia banned camera-phones but over time the realisation came that this was the way forward. I expect the same to happen with Google Glass,? he said.

As for the product coming to the UAE, Kandil said: ?The Glass Explorer program is only available in the US. We have no more information regarding its expansion elsewhere,?

He said it?s still early days for the project. ?Glass is still in its early stage. It isn?t the sort of technology you can develop in a conference room - we really need people to take it out into the world and see what they?d like to do with it across a wide range of hobbies, lifestyles, and environments. That?s why we?re working so hard on the Glass Explorer program - the Explorers will be the people who will help us shape the future of this technology and how it will be used.?

The Glass Explorer was unveiled officially at last June?s Google I/O conference and is not expected to be available to consumers until next year (a few thousand early adopters paid $1,500 (Dh5,509) for the device), but the tech world is already looking through the glass at a whole new world of possibilities.

And yes, don?t be surprised if people exchange their goggles for Googles, come 2014!

Locate The Right Health Insurance Plan For Your Needs With These ...

Too many people wait until something happens to get health insurance. This occurs often because of neglect in understanding the urgency for it, or because of the fear of the seemingly overwhelming cost associated with it. The following article will provide you with advice that will help you become more knowledgeable about health insurance.

Check with your company?s human resources department to see if you qualify for a wellness program for employees. A lot of employers offer incentives for employees for having their lifestyles and health assessed. By signing up for a fitness program, you can reduce the cost of your health insurance and save money on your premiums.

TIP! If you need glasses, or if someone in you family does, vision insurance should benefit you. A portion of eye doctor visits as well as corrective lenses are covered.

Your choice of health insurance hinges on what it covers. If your medical coverage works for these sorts of events, you may end up with less money to pay for your time out of work.

It is important to review your health insurance policy each year during open enrollment. Your insurance needs can rapidly change as your health changes and your family grows. You can also make changes to vision, dental and other insurance options.

Each year, check to see which prescriptions are covered. Since insurance companies are prone to altering what drugs they will cover, read all the fine print each time you re-enroll. If a regular medication has been dropped and a substitute isn?t acceptable, you may need to find a policy with a different company.

TIP! Don?t expect your health care policy to be straightforward. Learn all the exceptions in your policy so that your insurance company won?t deny you benefits you thought you were entitled to based on a loophole.

Most health insurance plans have loopholes, and yours is probably not an exception. Read the policy through and through, so you know what it does and doesn?t cover. Be prepared in advance to pay out of pocket for things that may not be covered, like certain medications or procedures.

Regardless of the kind of policy you have, choosing generic medications will always save you money. There are a few instances that you won?t be able to get generics, but using them is no different than using the brand name, as studies have shown.

Read your health insurance policy thoroughly to discover which medications are eligible for coverage. The prescriptions that are covered change on a yearly basis, so check the list every time you re-enroll to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

TIP! When you are looking to change health insurance plans be sure to verify that your current doctors will be covered, unless you do not mind having to change doctors. Typically insurance companies have a list of hospitals and doctors that they cover on their website.

You are required to purchase private insurance within the state where you live. Therefore, going to a hospital in a different state may mean that your policy will not cover it. Insurance companies set their own rules, so be sure to find out their policies ahead of time.

Keep in mind that some insurance companies will add a surcharge if a spouse you include on your insurance plan has access to their own insurance through an employer. You need to figure up the costs for either scenario here. You may find that it?s cheaper just to have separate insurance policies through your own employers.

Be careful and pay heed to your bills. You may think that because you have health insurance that the additional costs you have to pay will be low. In some cases though, this can be wrong, especially when the cost of prescriptions are taken into consideration. Some doctors simply write out a prescription without considering the generic version of the medication. In addition, you should check prices at various pharmacies. Generics are generally cheap, but different pharmacies have different prices.

TIP! Doing your homework is key before buying a catastrophic health insurance policy. Make sure that it will cover all of the events that you think it will.

Getting insurance with a group or through your employer is much cheaper than purchasing insurance by yourself. The best way to avoid high individual rates is to join a trade group which offers insurance to members.

Health Insurance

You can find valuable information by reading your insurance policy. When you purchase health insurance, you?ll receive a manual that provides you with in-depth details about your policy. In order to fully comprehend the benefits and limitations of your policy, you need to carefully read the entire booklet. Even though parts of the manual may not be exactly riveting, it?s still important for you to absorb all of the information within it.

TIP! You have a lot more options than you may be aware of when choosing health insurance plans. Prior to meeting your insurance agent, or setting up health insurance through work, know all of your options.

If you consider buying catastrophic coverage for your health insurance, make sure to find out exactly what is and is not covered. As health insurance for a healthy individual, it?s not worth it because you will end up paying all of your own expenses. Once you have selected the policy, you will need a HSA or Health Savings Account where you can make deposits to pay for your deductible should the worst happen.

Even if you?re pet is indoors, you should have pet insurance. Just as people are susceptible to illness and accidental injury, so too are our pets. There is a lot that can happen unexpectedly. Your pet can still break a tooth or bone indoors, and that may need pricey vet care.

Some agencies may deny your enrollment or claim if you do not fill out the forms in the right way. Make sure you review your enrollment form before sending it.

Insurance Policy

You should read your insurance policy to make sure you understand you coverage so there will be no ugly surprises when you need it. The booklet that your insurer sends will cover the ins and outs of your health insurance policy, and reading through the entire book is the best way to get an accurate picture of your coverage. It might seem tedious, but you need to know everything in the book.

Health insurance has a lot of factors to consider, so you must be organized and prepared when choosing a policy. You will ultimately be happier with the policy you choose if you are orderly with reviewing the options, open with discussions about what you need, and check out multiple companies who offer the service.

TIP! Make sure you choose a company that is suitable for you when shopping for health insurance. Preferred Provider Organizations or PPOs have a network of medical professionals you can choose from, and you can see your own choice of doctor for a fee.

When shopping for new insurance, make sure you have a record of all your medical expenses. Be aware of what you can afford to pay for coverage and deductibles, whether it is for you or someone else in your family.

An option you have when getting a prescription from your doctor is to ask him to double the dose he prescribes. Usually, a pill double the size isn?t double the cost, so you can save cash in the long run. The savings will offset the cost of a pill splitter in a relatively short order.

You should not only insure yourself, but also your children. It will likely be very expensive to adequately treat many conditions without insurance. To fully provide for your children?s needs, you will need good health insurance for them.

Health Insurance

The more you know about health insurance, the wiser a decision you can make. Learn all you can so that you can get an affordable health insurance package that meets all your family?s needs. You should not neglect your insurance needs. Health insurance just might be the most necessary purchase that you ever make.

Having a good credit score is helpful in getting the best insurance prices. You may discover that you are paying a higher premium if you have a poor credit score. In fact, a prospective insurer may use that information to deny you coverage. Give serious thought to repairing your credit score before searching for a health insurance plan.

Clayton Home Based Business ? 7 Traffic Techniques For Network ...

Morrisville Network marketing is a numbers game. The more and more people you introduce to your opportunity, the extra money you?ll make. To start generating a steady stream of visitors to your website, try these 7 creative techniques:

1. Write and Distribute Articles, Reports and Ebooks. Internet users are all curious about one thing ? info. Use this to promote your business by creating high quality content and allowing others to reprint it for you. One good way to do this is to distribute a brandable ebook or special report. This is one that a web site or list owner can change to incorporate a reference to their web site. This does not mean that it appears like they?re the publisher, it?s just a way for them to incorporate facts on where the electronic book was downloaded from and (if applicable) to incorporate their affiliate link for your products and services.

2. Participate in Newsgroups, Forums, and Mailing Lists. There are many forums online and you can find one for almost any topic imaginable. Most permit you to add a signature line that will be attached to every message. This is an opportunity for you to advertise your site. Visiting these forums to post thoughtful questions and offer your expertise will mean your signature is believed by others and will bring you free, targeted traffic. Obviously how much traffic you get depends on how often you post and whether your signature makes people want to visit your website. A good approach is to use an ad you?ve had success with elsewhere as your signature.

3. Join Networking Sites to Constructor your Personal Network. Networking sites are made to make it simple for people to meet others in their industry and to advertise their products and service. Much in-line with offline networking events where lots of people bond for the sole function of meeting people, online networking sites work in an identical way.

4. Use Classified Sites and Traffic Exchanges. Classified ad sites and traffic exchanges have gotten a bad standing, but they really do work if you know how to give them a try. If you are promoting a product or service that advertisers can benefit from then they?re a great place to get traffic. Although not very lots of customers visit this type of advertising sites, lots of website owners do as a way to ensure their ad appears on the site. While there they can?t help but notice other ads and if one catches their attention you more than likely to acquired a visitor.

5. Run a Contest. People love the chance of winning something ? that?s why a contest can sometimes be a great traffic generator. The key is to select a prize that will attract men and women from your target audience. If you make the grand prize a new laptop you?ll be able to get entries from everyone who want to win a new laptop ( which is essentially every computer user globally!). Get more targeted traffic by selecting a thing that your target audience is interested in but wouldn?t mean much to other people. To start promoting your challenge do a search in Google for Contest Directories and you?ll find a great deal of places to list your competition for free.

6. Include a Powerful Signature on all Outgoing Email. On every occasion you send a piece of mail you have the prospect to get a visitor to your website. Simply make a signature that is automatically added to every outgoing message. Use the signature to briefly explain what you do, give your USP or slogan and add a hyperlink to your website. Once it?s set up you don?t have to consider it again!

7. Try Newsletter Classified Ads. There are a great deal of newsletter publishing firms who give commercials to new subscribers. Although these don?t typically bring a huge response, they can generate some traffic if you offer something with a high perceived value but low price tag. They?re also a great way to test new ads to see which ones get the best response. As soon as you have discovered a victor use it in a PPC campaign, make it your new email signature, run it as a top sponsor newsletter ad or use it as your forum signature.

As Charlie Watts lit off the quick fill that starts the song, Grohl strutted out from the shadows between Watts' drums riser and the organ rig. After swapping a quick lick or two with Ronnie Wood, Grohl joined Mick Jagger at center stage, where he played guitar and sang lead on a verse from the 1971?"Sticky Fingers"?tune.

The Rolling Stones offer plenty of surprises in Los Angeles tour kickoff

Grohl, the?Foo Fighters?frontman, is the latest in a string of guests who have joined the Stones onstage on their ongoing "50 and Counting" tour. Gwen Stefani and Keith Urban sat in during the band's?tour opener?in Los Angeles earlier this month, and?Tom Waits?and?Katy Perry?have appeared as well.

The Stones' brief run last year in London, New York and New Jersey also included a roster of all-star collaborators, including?Eric Clapton?and, in a?tour-ending blowout,?Lady Gaga?and?Bruce Springsteen. The 50 and Counting tour continues through June 24 in the U.S. before the band heads to England for a handful of shows at Glastonbury and in Hyde Park in London.

Kershaw pitches 3-hitter as Dodgers beat Brewers

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Clayton Kershaw scattered three singles in his second complete game of the year and Matt Kemp hit his first home run since April 24, lifting the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.

Ryan Braun managed a pair of singles and Yuniesky Betancourt also singled for the only hits off Kershaw (5-2). The lefty struck out five and walked one.

Andre Ethier homered and tripled for the last-place Dodgers before being ejected by plate umpire Dan Bellino for arguing a called third strike in the eighth inning.

The victory was a respite for Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. He addressed speculation before the game on whether he would be fired this week, insisting he didn't feel as if he was about to be replaced.

Yovani Gallardo (3-4) gave up three runs, including two homers, in six innings. The right-hander lost his third consecutive start and the reeling Brewers have dropped 15 of 18 games.

With the Dodgers' bullpen giving up 12 runs while Los Angeles was swept in a three-game weekend series at Atlanta, Mattingly took no chances. He sent Kershaw out for the ninth, and the ace needed only 10 pitches to retire the Brewers in order.

Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said before the game he thought Kemp's lack of power this season was due to the slugger's offseason surgery on his left shoulder.

The star center fielder hit his second homer of the season, connecting for the first time in a span of 87 at-bats. Kemp's solo homer came in the sixth.

Colletti said his team, second-to-last in the majors in scoring at 3.4 runs per game, needed to hit better in the clutch. The Dodgers went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position against the Brewers.

Kershaw beat the Brewers for the second time in five starts. He has given up only three earned runs in 39 2-3 innings for an 0.68 ERA in that span.

Kemp, who hit 116 homers the past four seasons, walked to lead off the second and scored easily on Ethier's triple for a 1-0 lead.

The Brewers tied it in the third. Rickie Weeks walked and later scored on a groundout to second by Norichika Aoki.

Ethier's solo homer, his fourth, put the Dodgers ahead in the fourth.

NOTES: Dodgers LHP Ted Lilly was reinstated off the 15-day DL. RHP Matt Magill was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque. Lilly will spend a couple of days in the bullpen and is expected to start Saturday against St. Louis. ... Dodgers INF Jerry Hairston has tendinitis in his left knee.

Prenatal exposure to traffic is associated with respiratory infection in young children

May 20, 2013 ? Living near a major roadway during the prenatal period is associated with an increased risk of respiratory infection developing in children by the age of 3, according to a new study from researchers in Boston.

"The connection between in utero and early life cigarette smoke exposure and adverse infant respiratory outcomes is well-established, but the relation of prenatal ambient air pollution to risk of infant respiratory infection is less well-studied," said lead author Mary Rice, MD, a pulmonary and critical care fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. "Our study extends previous findings by showing that proximity to a major roadway during the prenatal period is associated with increased risk of subsequent respiratory infection in children."

The study results will be presented at the ATS 2013 International Conference in Philadelphia.

The study included 1,271 mother-child pairs enrolled during the first trimester of pregnancy between 1999 and 2002 in Project Viva in eastern Massachusetts. The distance from home addresses to the nearest Federal class 1/2A ("major") roadway was calculated using geographic information system software. Respiratory infections were defined as maternal report of any doctor-diagnosed pneumonia, bronchiolitis, croup or other respiratory infection from birth until age 3.

Statistical analyses of the relationship between exposure to a major roadway and respiratory infection were adjusted for gender, birth weight, maternal education, household income, neighborhood income and education, maternal smoking during pregnancy, postnatal household smoking, breastfeeding, daycare attendance, presence of other young children in the household and season of birth. Of the 1,271 mother-child pairs studied, 6.4% lived less than 100 meters, 6.5% lived 100 to 200 meters, 33.7% lived 200 to less than 1000 meters and 53.4% lived 1,000 meters or more from a major roadway. By the age of 3, 678 (53.3%) of the children had had at least one doctor-diagnosed respiratory infection. After adjustment for possible confounders and risk factors for respiratory infection, children whose mothers lived less than 100 meters from a major roadway during pregnancy were 1.74 times as likely as those living 100 meters or more from a major roadway to have had a respiratory infection. Those living 100 to 200 meters from a major roadway were 1.49 times as likely to have had a respiratory infection.

"In our study, living in close proximity to a major roadway during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of respiratory infection in children, adding to the growing body of evidence linking exposure to traffic with adverse effects on health," said Dr. Rice. "Future research will need to clarify whether the apparent harmful postnatal effects of living close to a major road during pregnancy is due to air pollution from traffic or other exposures related to roads. We plan to further explore this connection using a measure of black carbon, a component of traffic-related air pollution. Using black carbon measures, we also plan to disentangle the associations of pre- vs postnatal air pollution exposures with respiratory infection in early life."

The 5 Types of Ax Everyone Should Know

The forest isn't just going to lay down and stack itself into timber piles because you asked nicely. You'll need to fell, chop, and hew it into submission. Here are the tools to do it.

Felling Axes

First things first, if you want to knock down trees you're going to need a felling ax. These are designed with an extremely sharp, thin blade (or "bit") and slowly tapered head in order to cut across the wood grain as deeply as possible with every stroke. To that end, felling axes tend to have mid-weight heads?about 2.5 to 3.5 pounds?and have a 28- to 36-inch handle. This makes them ideal for creating stumps and lopping off the limbs of downed trees. There are many variations to the basic felling ax design, often bearing the name of the region it was developed such as Michigan or Dayton axes.

Hudson Bay Axes

Fitted with a smaller head and handle than a felling ax, the one-handed Hudson Bay is what's known as a 3/4 ax. Developed in the 17th century by French fur traders working the Hudson Bay trade routes, its 2-pound head and 22- to 28-inch handle make it perfect for trimming limbs and small chopping jobs. You won't take down a Sequoia with it, but a Hudson Bay will quickly turn a pile of medium-size logs into kindling.

Splitting Mauls

Rather than cut deeply across the grain as a felling ax does, a splitting maul utilizes a heavy wedge-shaped head designed to rend logs along the grain. These axes feature a 6- to 8-pound head, which delivers a more forceful strike without becoming stuck in the wood, and a nearly straight handle, which allows the user to lever the maul deeper into the split after the initial strike. Mauls also have a broad butt (the rear face of the head) that can be used to hammer a second splitter through the log.

Broadaxes

Broadaxes, named for their large bits and long beards (the lower part of the bit that hangs down below the rest of the head), have long been used in traditional woodworking for hewing logs into beams. The bits of these axes are beveled on either a single side, giving it the appearance of a very a chisel, or on both sides, which creates a scalloped cut. This allows the user to precisely cut away the rounded edges of a log while creating a relatively flat face. The only drawback is that these axes can only be used as dedicated left- or right-handed tools dictated by the side of the bevel.

Carpenter's Axes

For more delicate woodworking, a carpenter's ax is essential. These single-handed axes are slightly larger than hatchet, with a 1.5-pound head and 10- to 14-inch handle. These axes typically have long beards that allows the user to choke up on the handle for more control.

G Data InternetSecurity 2014

We're almost five months into 2013, and you know what that means, right? Yes, it's time for the 2014 security product lines to appear! G Data InternetSecurity 2014 is the first security suite I've reviewed that has 2014 in its name, but others will be along soon enough.

At $44.95 for three licenses, G Data costs less than many of its competitors. Even Ad-Aware Pro Security 10.5 costs $48. And G Data comes with a full complement of suite features, adding the antispam and parental control components that Ad-Aware lacks. Some of the components work very well, others aren't quite as impressive.

New Interface
G Data's 2014 product line boasts a brand-new user interface with big, touch-friendly buttons that select among five important pages: SecurityCenter, Virus protection, Firewall, Parental controls, and Autostart Manager. Many security products use a green banner when everything's fine, changing to yellow or red if there's a problem. G Data's window is always red across the top, but icons on the SecurityCenter page change to point out areas needing attention.

G Data AntiVirus 2014 shares a lot with this suite. It has the exact same SecurityCenter, Virus protection, and Autostart Manager pages; it just lacks Firewall and Parental controls.

Mixed Antivirus Protection
Since the antivirus component of this suite has exactly the same capabilities as G Data AntiVirus 2014, I'll simply summarize my findings here. You can get full details in my review of the antivirus.

I hit some snags during G Data's cleanup of my twelve malware-infested test systems. The antivirus scanner mistakenly quarantined some essential Windows files, leaving two of the systems unbootable. Recovery required use of the G Data Boot Medium, a German keyboard layout chart, and a cram course in Linux. Whew!

G Data scored poorly in my malware removal test, with a detection rate of 58 percent and an overall score of 4.3 points, both values the lowest of all products tested using my current malware collection. Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security scored best in this group, with 6.0 points, though Ad-Aware Pro's 83 percent detection rate was highest.

Tested against my previous malware collection, Norton Internet Security (2013), Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete 2013, and Comodo Internet Security Complete 2013 all scored 6.6 points. For details on this test's methodology, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Related Story

G Data fared much better in my malware blocking test, detecting 92 percent of the samples and scoring 9.2 points. Only Ad-Aware Pro scored better against the same samples, with 94 percent detection and 9.4 points. Webroot did best among products tested with the previous collection, scoring a near-perfect 9.9 points. For a full explanation of this malware blocking test, see How We Test Malware Blocking.

Related Story

When I tried to download the same malware samples again, G Data blocked all access to many at the URL level. It wiped out others during the course of the download process. Its behavior blocker properly left valid PCMag utilities alone while blocking actual malware.

The independent testing labs give G Data's technology good marks overall. It scored especially well in tests by AV-Comparatives, earning ADVANCED+ (the top rating) in two tests and ADVANCED in a third. Note, though, that Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 earned top marks from all of the labs I follow. For more about the labs and the tests they run, see How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests

Hospitals: UC Staff Strike Postpones Patient Surgeries | KTXL FOX40

MedicalSACRAMENTO (LATimes)-

Facing a possible two-day strike next week by patient care and technical workers, the five large University of California medical centers are starting to cancel elective surgeries that had been scheduled as soon as Monday, officials said.

Emergency care will not be shut and patients already in the hospitals across the state will continue to receive care. But many elective procedures will delayed until after the potential strike, set for Tuesday and Wednesday, according to John Stobo, UC?s senior vice president for health sciences and services. Patients are being notified about the surgery delays at the hospitals in San Diego, Irvine, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Davis, he said.

At Sacramento?s UC Davis Medical Center, they told FOX40 they are reviewing upcoming procedures to see which ones could be postponed.

?We will care for as many patients as we can safely manage, depending upon the availability of staff? said David Ong with UC Davis Health Systems in Sacramento.

The union representing the 13,000 nursing assistants, scanning techs, operating room scrubs, respiratory experts and others threatening the strike said it will keep weekend-level staffing in critical areas such as respiratory therapy for intensive care, neonatal and burn units during a walkout.

In case of medical emergencies, some strikers will go back to work and then return to picket lines after the patients are treated, said Todd Stenhouse, spokesman for Local 3299 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. ?The most important thing here is that patient safety be preserved,? he said.

However, UC?s Stobo, who was attending a UC regents meeting in Sacramento on Thursday, said a strike would inconvenience and possibly endanger patients. He said UC would hire temporary replacement workers during a strike, which he estimated could cost UC at least $15 million in lost revenue and extra pay over two days.

Sam Cohen contributed to this report

For more information about the strike, read more on LATimes.com

Stevens rides Oxbow to 3rd Preakness win

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Although no one really keeps track of such things, Gary Stevens had no problem making the assessment with complete conviction.

"I guarantee I'm the first grandfather winner of a Triple Crown race," said the 50-year-old Stevens, who guided Oxbow to a stunning upset victory Saturday in the Preakness.

Stevens retired in 2005 after a long struggle with knee pain. He resumed riding in early January, the same week he got a call from 77-year-old trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who told him about a couple of promising 3-year-old colts who could make the Derby.

One of them was Oxbow.

With Stevens riding confidently in the saddle, Oxbow led from start to finish and won the Preakness by 1? lengths to end Orb's bid for the Triple Crown. The victory justified Stevens' decision to return to racing.

"I'm not going to lie to you, to win a classic at 50 years old after seven years' retirement, it doesn't get any better than this," he said. "This is super, super sweet. All the stars were aligned. I couldn't be more pleased winning this thing. It's even more special winning it for Wayne Lukas and his team."

It was Stevens' third career victory in the Preakness, the first since 1997 on Silver Charm.

Oxbow covered the 1 3/16th miles in 1:57.54. The ride, Stevens said, was easier than it looked.

"A lot of critics are going to think that I'm full of it saying this, but I won with a little something left, believe it or not," Stevens said.

Stevens captured his first Triple Crown race in 1988 for Lukas, and they have remained close since then.

"Wayne put me on the map," Stevens said. "When you win that first classic, your phone starts ringing and people want you. I got the call about Oxbow this year dating all the way back to 1988."

It was a phone call Lukas won't ever regret. Although he changed jockeys on his other two entrants in the Preakness, Lukas remained convinced that Stevens was the right person to ride Oxbow. For days, they talked about the best way to run the race. But there's really no way to predict what the other horses will do.

"I left it up to Gary," Lukas said. "Let me say, I think I got a Hall of Fame ride. We can plan this thing, we can talk about it, we can talk about strategy. But once that gate is open, they have to make the decisions. Gary made some great ones."

As he was gathering momentum and leaving the other eight horses in his wake, Stevens couldn't help but think about the trainer that provided him with his first Triple Crown winner and got him back into the game at an age when most jockeys have long since quit.

"I was smiling pretty good on the back side. I actually thought about Wayne up in the grandstands," Stevens said. "I knew he had to be looking at those fractions and was pleased with what he was seeing."

Not long after that, Lukas, Stevens and their brown colt had a wonderful time in the winner's circle.

"He wasn't a tired horse. He was a happy horse," Stevens said. "He enjoyed the celebration as much, well maybe not as much as Wayne and I, but he was enjoying it."

Next up for Stevens, Lukas and Oxbow: A ride over 1? miles in the Belmont on June 8.

"What about the Belmont? This horse has a happy kind of pace, and anybody that wants to come and tangle with him early on, bring it on. You're going to get in trouble if you tangle with him. That's all I can say."

Oh, he had more. As he was wrapping up his press conference, Stevens said, "You're only as good as the horses you ride and the people that you ride for. And I rode for what I consider to be one of the greatest trainers of all time."

Then he looked up and saw Lukas in the corner of the room.

"I didn't know you were standing there still," Stevens said. "Oh, all right. I love you, Wayne."

Hugh Hefner, Crystal Harris Buy First Matrimonial ... - AOL Real Estate

Hollywood Hills home of Hugh Hefner, Crystal Harris

By Catherine Sherman

Newlyweds Hugh Hefner and Crystal Harris may need to set a price limit for exchanging gifts. Shortly after Harris made her husband a homemade gift for his 87th birthday, the Playboy magazine founder dropped $4.995 million on a Hollywood Hills mansion for the 27-year-old Playmate. The couple finally tied the knot in January. They'd been engaged for awhile, but Harris called off the wedding in 2011. Now the newlyweds have sealed the deal with their first real estate purchase. According to TMZ, Harris is a co-owner of the property. (UPDATE: 10:20 a.m. EDT by AOL Real Estate -- The Huffington Post, meanwhile, reports that the title is in the name of Crystal Harris' mother.)

The modern manse is constructed in a decidedly different style than the traditional and Tudor-esque architecture of the Playboy Mansion. The 5,917-square-foot home was built in 2011 with several modern amenities, as well as a view of the city lights. A gated entrance leads into a contemporary kitchen and up a floating wood staircase into a luxurious master bedroom and bath. Outside, a white-glass infinity pool and deck provide secluded relaxation while sliding doors out front provide open-air living space.

Hefner has lived in the famous Playboy Mansion for several years, but it may come as a surprise that the millionaire doesn't own it. According to details of the lease, filed with the SEC as an appendix to his employment agreement, Hefner pays rent for the 29-room house. With the "Bunny Hutch" (across the street from Hefner's not-so-humble abode) recently listed for $11 million, time will tell whether Hefner decides to make the Hollywood Hills home his primary residence.
